Devoe Suspended

Year after year after year...

...after year after year after year.

Come on guys how about a little bit of responsibility. Your not in high school anymore.

This University is snake bit. Even when we go to the final four we really don't.

And when we finally get a great coach he can't control his players.

Whose next.... With this program it's not if it's when.

Very frustrating. This really BLOWS.

but would you rather have it now or in the Big Ten season?

This crap shouldn't be happening at all let alone every damn year.

Honestly this displays why Tubby is the number one coach in the Big Ten in my opinion. He sits arguably his most important player on the eve of our toughest non-conference in along time, for bad behavior that doesn't have charges attached to it. Yet other coaches only suspend their players for DWIs one meaningless non-conference game, or rework their schedule to play tougher teams when their players get back from suspension like mississippi state. Tubby gets that their are more important things for young men then basketball something other coaches should take a lesson from.

+1. Completely agree. I would much rather have this than the other way around.

At what point does Tubby have some accountability with this mess? Does a coach really deserve praise for having to continually suspend his players? And then you have the gambles like RW where everyone saw trouble a mile away. Frankly, I'm unimpressed this keeps happening.

In light of this, let's not forget all of the terrible reporters who tried to say it was a leg injury. Thanks for basing your entire breaking news stories on old information. Seriously, even I can go through the logic to make stupid assumptions like a lot of these guys do, the difference is that I don't get a paycheck for doing so.

To me, it just makes me wonder how the guys who stay out of trouble feel? A guy like Blake, senior year, last year was supposed to be great, but that went down in flames, then this year is supposed to be something good too and then this comes down...It's got to be very frustrating

+1

Bad feeling of deja vu. Hopefully Devoe is willing and able to work through his issues. I get the feeling Tubby will not be bending the rules and if Devoe doesn't get things sorted out he will not be playing for a long time. Hopefully he can still practice with the team, just not play or travel.

Mo seems to have his head on straight, hopefully he can help Devoe. Per Tubby, Mo needs to give Devoe a big bear hug or sit on him or whatever it takes.

Devoe has been a great player and teammate, hopefully everything works out for him.

All I know is that this suspension better be short lived because we are an entirely different team without him. Watching Devoe shooting at halftime against Winona State was unreal, he had a certain swagger to him and was hitting deep 3 after deep 3. He appeared to be more confident to me, more polished. When he gets hot, we are going to be a very difficult team to beat! Without him we are going to struggle to keep up wth teams offensively. Good teams can get consistant outside shooting from their 1s, 2s, and 3s. Other than Devoe, Hoff is the only other "shooter" we have, and Nolan's jump shot is flat broke! If we go anywhere this season, it will be on the back of Devoe Joseph.

Never a dull moment with this team. Too bad for the team. Retarded move by Joseph though. Nice teammate. (If the drug thing is true)

If it end up being 5-10 games, I think it could help the team in the long run. Much longer and it could really hurt though. Not much depth at the PG spot.

Well, hopefully teams won't figure out that all they'll need to do is play defense against us the way that Portland did last year. Hoffarber is going to be the only player in our lineup with a shot that's actually a threat. Hopefully Hollins can shoot/play well enough to log a lot of minutes. I can't imagine it would be that hard to defend our half court offense playing zone without Devoe.

is being suspended for weed a university policy or an ncaa policy?

Folks, before the "why is our program cursed?" line keeps getting thrown out, remember that we now have essentially a zero tolerance policy (not written, but known about) because of A) Tubby- that's he rolls and B) the schools past black eye from 10+ years ago. We are not cursed and I'm pretty sure we have about the same number of screw ups as a lot of schools we just don't brush it off and "suspend" a guy for a game. Just my opinion.

That said, Devoe has let himself and his team down... hopefully he realizes what he is doing to himself (and team) and gets his act together.

More than likely some of both. The NCAA certainly has guidelines on banned substances, the schools enfore those rules. I would imagine this isn't Devoe's first offense and the punishment, now suspension, increases in severity with each offense.

B. Alcohol/Drug Consumption
The use of alcohol or drugs by student-athletes while involved in any team-related practices, competitions, banquets, travel or other activities is prohibited, regardless of age. Student-athletes under the legal age to consume (21 years of age) in Minnesota are expected to abide by city, state and federal laws. Consequences for violating this policy may include treating the incident as a first positive drug test under the University of Minnesota athletics department Alcohol and Drug Education policy. Additional consequences may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Verbal and written warning and participation in educational sessions
Required chemical dependency assessment and/or treatment
Suspension from the team
Loss of eligibility and dismissal from the team
Loss of athletics related scholarship aid
Dismissal from the University

Additionally, it is expected that the consumption of alcohol by student-athletes who are of legal age will be within the parameters of team, department and University policies and will be handled responsibly. Consequences for underage alcohol use, inappropriate alcohol use by student-athletes of legal age to consume, or illegal drug use will be determined on a case by case basis. The head coach, Alcohol and Drug Education review board and the Athletics Director (or his/her designee) may be involved in determining the sanctions for violating this policy with the Athletics Director having final approval.

If it is a failed drug test, is that coming from the school or NCAA? If it's the school then I'll be really pissed. Just another example of U not being committed to winning. I just wish they would step out of the way and let the NCAA police its own organization. Well, back to being middle of the pack I guess!

Yes, everyone can be proud of a team full of criminals and thugs. Just win baby.

Some guy on the Wisconsin board is saying he knew about it a few days ago, and that Joseph indeed failed a drug test about 10 days ago. I am excited to see what the freshman will do to fill the void. I think this team will come out better for the experience.

Keep in mind that these guys aren't saints, they're college students. College students do stupid stuff and they will continue to do stupid stuff year after year after year...

While I am happy with Tubby's stance, I cannot understand why we are throwing around the term criminal and thugs. Somebody needs to tell me why Devoe is a criminal or a thug?

Getting a minor consumption constitutes "stupid stuff".

Having to retake English 1001 because you were too busy partying all semester constitutes "stupid stuff".

Doing your best to throw away a free education, and sullying your reputation when you're one of the most visible people on campus goes way beyond the pale of "stupid stuff".

Yeah, I really do wish Devoe were playing, but I think Al's suspension last year allowed Devoe to step up, and so perhaps Devoe's suspension will help one of the younger guys develop more quickly than they otherwise might.

Look, its better that it happened now rather than the end of the year.

I don't blame any college kid for smoking weed, but when you have a commitment to a team, maybe you should reevaluate your priorities. Smoking weed isn't THAT great. Hopefully he learns from this, and comes back strong.

I saw Devoe at the bars before he was 21, not that I blame him at all for that...its just when you're an athlete you're held to a higher (no pun intended) standard, fair or not.

so is Florida not proud of their 2 national titles when they have had 30 kids arrested of the Urban's tenure. People like you help ruin the gopher sports programs.

I really want to hear your response to this.

I'm confused, are you actually saying that these students should not be punished when they break the law? Or am I just misinterpreting what you said?

no what I am saying is no one remembers when kids get in trouble if your team wins. That idiot said that we can't be proud of a team if it has kids who get in trouble. Its never ideal, but no one remembers if your team wins. Case in point look at Florida football.

The problem is that Minneapolis has got some good ganja. That's all.

Win at all costs is not ok for me. You can disagree if you want, but I expect our student-athletes to follow the rules. I'm not the only one. Seems like the head coach is on my page, not yours.

Not a personal attack. Just saying there are folks out there that don't agree with you and calling us all idiots may be a bit................. inaccurate.

Yeah...this. Agree completely, Jake. Why have "rules"? Maybe we could just call them "suggestions" and not hold anyone accountable. Idiots? Pot meet kettle...
