Devoe Joseph to Transfer from Minnesota

The University of Minnesota basketball program and head coach Tubby Smith announced today that junior guard Devoe Joseph has decided to transfer from the University of Minnesota.

“We are disappointed that Devoe has decided to leave the University of Minnesota,” said Smith. “He was a big part of this team and will always be a member of the Gopher Basketball family. We wish him the best of luck.”

Joseph played in 76 career games in Maroon and Gold, including 25 starts, and finished with averages of 7.7 points, 2.4 assists, 2.3 rebounds and 21.6 minutes played. He leaves the university in ninth place all-time on the Gophers’ three-point field goal percentage list at .382 (97-217). He played in eight games this season after sitting out the team’s first six games due to a violation of team rules. He was averaging a career-high 11.2 points per game in the eight games played.

Like with all players, and rightfully so I might add, we the fans do not know the whole story, especially since the U is prevented of telling their side. Better not to try and fill in the gaps then speculate IMO. Best wishes Devoe...wish it could have worked, but I guess it was not meant to be.

Oh well, it's official now. Time to move on and move forward to OSU this weekend. Without Devoe, we played like a Final Four team. Each game we played without him in the lineup, we have won.

Question:

When is the last time the Gophers had an impact player(played major miniutes like Devoe) that transfered out. Royce never really played here and Paul Carter left because of his sister, but other than that?

Not counting those that 'turned pro'.

Landsberger transfered to Arizona State because he didn't want to play with Mark Olberding. Olberding then turned pro but new coach Jim Dutcher was unable to convince Landsberger to reverse his decision to transfer. Landsberger turned pro after his senior season at ASU.

Thanks, my memory had kind of muddled that.

Landsberger didn't want to play with Oberding? Was it a personality conflict? I remember both leaving but don't remember the specifics

station19, muddled memory happens to me often about a lot of things. BUT, my muddled memory never muddles to keep my fridge constantly stocked, cocked, and loaded. Is there a possible connection there?

Didn't transfer, but this is a little bit like the feeling when Przybilla quit seemingly out of the blue. It was first a suspension for academic reasons, and then he quit soon after that was announced. I know we were playing Indiana Tuesday, but I had to chuckle at the Gopher History Moment that game. They featured the game where we beat Indiana and Przybilla had a monster game with 33 points to lead us to the win. Everyone was really up because we had visions of really doing well if we could beat Indiana. Well, that was his last game as a Gopher. Sort of ironic they played that vignette with the news of Devoe quitting that day. Or else somebody in the athletic department has a nasty sense of humor.

If I remember right at the time the accepted story was Landsberger not wanting to put up Mussleman.

That's a good memory, but most weren't playing more than 10 minutes per game. Ohnstad (pot head) and James (phonebook) obviously did, but both were kicked off the team. The last player who was a starter was Mo Hargrow... but he then transferred back to the U after playing his junior season for Alabama.

Charles Thomas was a key in the final 4 run.

The year before, I *thought* I remembered Mark Jones playing a lot...taking up the slack when Bobby was injured.

Broxie got at least 10 minutes per game, didn't he? And Washington was getting quite a few minutes.

Engler and Coleman I don't remember much, but I remember liking Coleman a lot.

Sinville had to be close to 10 a game if not more.

I skipped over a lot of other transfers that obviously did nothing. These were the ones I can remember who were regular players.

I feel like the Monson era saw many players who were getting minutes and opportunities transfer out.

Rico Tucker and Mo Hargrow are mentioned above
Stanley Gaines
Steve Esselink would have played a lot as a senior but transferred to like UW-Whitewater or something
Who was that small Juco point guard who was here for like one season?

I'm going to stop now because I don't even like remembering the roster turnover on those teams.

Moe Hargrowe should have stayed gone. The game after he left (an OT loss to Indiana) was the best game they'd played to date that year. I'm shocked that Dan Monson let him back on the team.

Charles Thomas was going to be a real good player. Unfortunately he didn't do much after he transferred back home to Western Kentucky becuase of back problems. But it's been about 10 years since a "starter" like Devoe has left, which I suppose isn't that bad.

My guess is Devoe ends up at Iowa state with all of the quiters they have down there. They have 6 transfers on their roster, including Chris Allen from Michigan State. But Izzo kicked him out.

Esselink transferred to the University of Sioux Falls, IIRC. At least it was near home, but to leave Big 10 playing time for that was mind-blowing.

Exactly. That's after he transferred in to the U from Augustana. He went from DII to Big10 to NAIA. Not sure what "Sunshine" was thinking.

My memory is not quite as flawless as it was in days past. However what I recall is that Landsberger was the top HS player in Minnesota his senior year but was passed over for a D-1 scholarship. He attended Hancock CC in California for a year and established himself as a big time recruit. He accepted a scholarship from Musselman (front page news on the Strib) and joined the Gophers as a sophomore alongside incoming frosh Michael Thompson and Mark Olberding. No one had ever heard of Thompson but Olberding was a Royce White like recruit. He had all the press and Musselman had made it clear that as a high school senior he was more than good enough to start for the Gophers. Musselman had promised Landsberger that the Gophers would play an "up tempo" style but the team's "grind it out" style was designed and built around Olberding. Olberding played a very physical game. Olberding was clearly #1 and Landsberger #2. Thompson played in their shadows.
At the end of the year Landsberger transfered citing the style as his reason. Rumor was that he was jealous of Olberding. Shortly afterwards Musselman bailed to coach at San Diego in the ABA and thus avoid the sanctions that were about to come to UM BB. Olberding was drafted by San Diego and turned pro on Musselman's advice. He was soon traded to San Antonio where he sat on the bench and watched George Gervin play. Both he and Landsberger went on to" journeyman" careers as pros. The two native Minnesotan stars of the team had bolted while the Bahamian/Floridian Thompson stayed and went on to have perhaps the finest career of any Gopher BB player ever. He was really fun to watch.

Charles Thomas was going to be a real good player. Unfortunately he didn't do much after he transferred back home to Western Kentucky becuase of back problems. .

I was looking forward to him teaming up with Eric Harris in 1998. They called Quincy Lewis "instant offense" but from what I remember the score keeper may as well have tallied 3 for the Gophers as soon as he saw Clem bringing Thomas in for the the first time each game.

Olberding's San Antonio "bench" career:

76-77: 23.8 minutes/game, 5.5rpg, 10.4ppg
77-78: 22.4mpg, 4.7rpg, 8.2ppg
78-79: 23.6mpg, 5.4rpg, 9.4ppg
79-80: 28.1mpg, 5.6rpg, 10.6ppg
80-81: 29.4mpg, 5.7rpg, 12.3ppg
81-82: 30.9mpg, 6.5rpg, 13.8ppg

It sounds like Charles had a problem with keeping certain things under wrap, so keeping him around wasn't an option. The other site discusses from time to time

I have heard other references similar to this . I have never seen anyone state the specifics. That was 13,14 years ago. Has enough time passed so that someone could state what exactly happened?
