I was not able to see all of the CSU game. Regarding the O-Line struggles, were they having trouble in pass protection in non-blitz situations? If the struggles were basically on blitzes, that I'm afraid will fall back on Mitch to some degree. If a team keeps blitzing you, the QB has to show the ability to punish the D by completing passes to receivers in single coverage.

You do realize that tons of teams (including ours) utilize zone blitzes these days. Its no as simple as 'blitz means everyone's in man' anymore. Teams drop ends and tackles and disguise things all the time and if the line isn't picking it up properly you can't expect a QB to save the day. Sometimes the routes are longer developing or a QB rightfully expects something to be picked up and someone blows an assignment. The QB can't play with his head on a swivel watching the pass rush. Its especially silly to blindly blame the QB for plays you admit you haven't even seen.

Kill was pretty non-committal when asked about the backup QB today, but he didn't rule out Croft playing this year. He mentioned all 3 of Streveler, Perra, and Croft. I think there are certain scenarios out there where each one of those 3 is the backup QB.

I missed the first 15 minutes, but he went on for quite a while about the QB controversy and defended Mitch completely. Did it seem to you that he almost suggested that Croft might be #2 and playing him might add to the controversy, but wouldn't affect Kill's opinion about Mitch as #1?

I said SOME of the responsibility falls on the QB. You don't think some of the responsibility falls on the QB? If the D feels like they can keep blitzing because the QB is not hitting receivers, they are going to keep blitzing. Having said that, yes, I agree zone blitzes have made it more difficult on the QB. My main question was wondering if the O-Line was having trouble with pass protection on non-blitz situations.

Your specific critique was that the QB has to make the defense pay via short passes. But you have no idea what the play calls are, if the WRs have, and are executing, hot routes, where the pressure is coming from, etc. Its possible the QB can have some responsibility in calling and adjusting pass protection but maybe not as many teams leave that up to the C and guards. Its also possible that Mitch should be recognizing things pre-snap and calling audibles/adjustments based on that but one, you don't know that and two, a lot of blitzes these days are delayed or from fronts in which there are 6-7 different potential rushers on each play and its on the OL/TE/HB/RB to identify and pick up post snap. Teams try to bait QBs into hot routes all the time while dropping into coverage. Campbell almost got that pick against TCU doing that and Ekpe did it this week. So to simply say 'well the QB should be throwing short passes against the blitz' may possibly have some truth to it but you really don't know, especially when you're talking about an entire game or half full of plays that are all different and you didn't even see.

Thanks for adding a bunch of stuff I never said. I really like how you actually put quotes around something I never said

I was paraphrasing. What you actually said was
'the QB has to show the ability to punish the D by completing passes to receivers in single coverage'
So lets see.. Is paraphrasing that quote into 'well the QB should be throwing short passes against the blitz' changing the message in any meaningful way? Of course not. But of course it's easier to point out insignificant differences then, ya know, actually respond to what I'm saying.

I miss the good old days of the: "Who's better - Leidner or Nelson?" threads.

The good Coach is a fun loving, kind of private guy and he is just messing with the fans minds a little bit. You are just going to have to tune in and see...week by week...day by day...hour by hour and minute by minute. Coach Kill is a fun loving secret keeping...just keep 'em guessing Kansas small-town boy who is holding ALL the cards in this game.

wren was here but he went where he could get more playing time...or at LEAST get a chance. He's doing some try outs and now is exploring a walk-on position here on GH. He appears to be assessing the situation...sizing up which site will provide him the most opportunity. He is kind of playing a "free-agent" role for the present. In this Gopher Talk Internet business things can change quickly. There are opportunities all over the place...In this old game...you win some...you lose some...you get knocked down...but: you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep on swinging for the fences. You NEVER know what tomorrow will bring...but: "wren was here...wren is here...wren is always around some where. He's getting pretty damn old...but...might have a few miles and contrasts and a bit of "attitude" left in him to have some laughs and look in on old friends from many seasons past . Thanks for inviting me to drop right in to the little "court" that a couple of you dominating posters are having in this thread pompous elitist. You and "spoofing" appear to be having a really nice time here. Your names suggest most everything about you two that any one would ever want to know.

The world of Gopher Talk Places is expanding. That's a good thing for a "journeyman poster" such as myself. Home is where ever I am. Life is very good. Beat the stinking badger, Gopher!

I think the Gophers need to drink some Ovaltine too.

"A Christmas Story" is my all time favorite holiday movie.
