DeAndre Mathieu

What I really like about Mathieu is that so far he has made his free throws (over 80%) which is so important for your point guard at the end of games to be able to do.

Dee Brown is a good comparison. I'd add that he needs to work on his aggressiveness when going for the steal. He too often reaches when he shouldn't which is why he is in foul trouble more than a PG should be.

I think this a good comparison. The difference maker for me though, is that Dee Brown could hit from absolutely anywhere on the floor in the half-court set. He consistently was making threes from beyond NBA range.

DeAndre has to be the best or one of the best players to come from JUCO this year, we are very lucky we got him.

Without doing any research I would easily say Mathieu is in the top 10 in terms of impact, from JUCO recruits last year. A couple guys off the top of my head who are having pretty good years are Chris Jones(Louisville) and Kenny Chery(Baylor). But Deandre has been stellar for us and he is only going to get better.

Couple of other little guards to come out of the JUCO ranks this year,
Chris Jones at Louisville, http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/66589/chris-jones
Kenny Chery at Baylor, http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/66296/kenny-chery

Next year, he and Jones will hook up in Father vs. Son tilt.

(Sorry, Death Clutch, right after I posted I saw yours.)

my only worry with Dre is that at times he plays too fast and loose with the ball and on occasion can be out of control. and once big ten play starts, the more athletic guards will take advantage of that by clamping down on him. i'm hopeful he will keep progressing, but proclaiming him as one of our best guards in a long time after going through our relatively weak non con schedule is a bit of an exaggeration to say the least. as long as he keeps on improving on his assist to TO ratio, i remain very optimistic that he will continue to provide the spark our team needs.

Wow, someone has no clue what kind of PG Harris was. HE WALKED the ball down the court. Eric was a solid player, but he had zero skills compared to this kid.

thank you sir

Yes - I think you're exactly right. Some of these MM and LM players just can't deal with him and he's taking advantage. In Big Ten play, he'll have to pick his spots. Decision making will be key. Right now his %shots is at 19%... I see that coming down a bit in conference games.

Overall, excellent nonconference performance for Mathieu. He's exceeded my expectations thus far.

Mathieu

I couldnt find Dee's actual nba draft height but i would give you 6' in shoes. As most have stated Mathieu is taller than 5'9" especailly in shoes. I would guess 5'11". Usually the heights listed are taller than the player, other times its backwards. Have you heard my story about my street and smith magazine with steve smith and jim jackson on the cover? Both listed at 6'6" in college and Smith has a good 4 inches on him.

I agree Mathieu's scoring is likely to go down as is all the scoring numbers, once the big ten starts. He is at 11.9 right now, so I am still thinking averaging 10 for the year is reasonable. If he keeps shooting 53% on 3's, which is unlikely, it could be greater. My prediction for the year: 10.5 pts, 2.3 reb, 4.4 ass, 1.9 stls.

I don't think Mathieu will end up being half the scorer Dee Brown was. In one game yeah 'Dre poured in the buckets, but Dee was a scorer for that Illinois team. Averaged 12+ pts/game for 4 years at Illinois. I do not expect 'Dre to score 10/pg, I imagine him as more of a facilitator once big 10 starts.

Not to mention that Dee Brown was 6' tall and 185 where Mathieu is per ESPN 5'9" 165QUOTE]
