Winfield Jr I thought was smaller than 5'10" but I maybe they are measure him with cleats on...

Anyway, he us a walk on now, so it is a bonus at the very least, and he could develop into a lot more.

No question that if you've got the skills, especially in CFB you can overcome the height thing and perform at a high level.

Not necessarily weeks. His 5-5, 155 pound listing was probably from the start of the season which would have been over 5-6 months ago. Could have been from longer ago too.

If he is up to 5-7, 180, he probably already was around that size when this arguing was taking place.

I’m more worried about adding too much weight, too quickly, if that means he lost a step or lost some vert. We’ll see in the fall.

Well if he grew 2 inches then it would be easier for him to put on 25 pounds then if was the same height.

If we want him to be anything more than a return specialist, being 5'7'' is a huge help versus 5'5''. 5'7'' is still undersized, but any length he can add to his frame is a huge help for him to see playing time in the secondary.

I would take the heights and weights posted by the team with a grain of salt and not just with him, but with any player. They obviously aren't completely inaccurate but there's usually a little bit of fudging here and there.

Regardless, Winfield is a steal as a PWO.

Watching his highlights, he certainly plays like a Winfield. If he is indeed 5-7, while still pretty small, its doable for a Winfield. I really really think this kid could pay off in a big (lol) way.
 


Colleges don't always tell the truth. My height and weight when I was in college playing DB was 5"10 - 185. The program said 6'1'' - 200 pounds. Unfortunately, I never reached my goal of being six foot :-(
 

I just got home from The Woodlands High School as my good friends daughter was signing her letter to play volleyball at Texas State. I witnessed Austin Winfield sign his letter and he gave a very nice little speech that thanked coach Fleck and a Row The Boat.

His father was sitting behind me and is excited for Austin and Minnesota football.

When my friends saw that Austin had accepted an offer to play at Minnesota they were all greatly surprised. When I shared with them that Austin is a PWO their reaction was, Oh, well that makes sense. Austin is no Antoine according to my friends that are in the know. They don't anticipate Austin being the same type of player that Antoine is.

BTW, The Woodlands High School is one of the mega high schools in Texas. Each class boasts approximately 1500 kids. The ninth graders have their own campus, so the actual high school is 10-12.

Thats interesting because Gophersports just created a page for Austin with his HS stats and they were arguably better than Antoine's, at least on defense. Had more tackles, TFL's and one more INT.

Austin: "as a senior, made 113 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, three interceptions and forced three fumbles"

Antoine: "as a senior, totaled 87 tackles, five forced fumbles and picked off a pair of passes • averaged 21 yards per punt return that included a 92-yard return for a touchdown"

Stats/production play a role of course in projecting a kid to the next level but there's a lot more that goes into it than that.

I know, I was responding to the "Austin is no Antoine according to my friends in the know." Based on those numbers it looks like he was every bit the player Antoine was at the high school level.
 


For those who are concerned about Austin's size I can tell you like many GH'ers reading this could; he will be the 3rd Winfield that I will watch play. Like his brother and Dad he is not very tall but they just dominate on the field. Don't question the genes!

Since 247 dropped their dots and then their red bars I can't make heads or tails of their ratings. What was once solid information is now just guesswork.

All I can tell you is that Antoine was a legend in high school and completely dominated at his position. His little brother may turn out to make some nice contributions to the Gophers, but when they are both at their best, Antoine is just a better player than Austin, period end of story!

I just passed Austin on campus, seemed to be closer to 5'4" than the 5'7" he's listed at.

247 has him at 5’5”. There’s was a video from fall camp of PJ talking to him. It looked like they were almost eye to eye, but maybe that’s not the case. Either way, Austin was dominant in high school, based on video I’ve watched. Looking at the team page, he was 6A District 15 defensive MVP. He might be a better open field tackler than his brother. I don’t know if a 5’4” - 5’5” safety can play meaningful downs in the Big Ten, though.

He may be 5' 4", but he plays 5' 7". Does PJ Fleck teach them to walk tall? I f he has speed like his brother, maybe they can use him on ST and Wildcat small version where you can hide him behind the big fellas. Who knows, he may be difficult to tackle at that height with speed. Or, he may be pulverized when they catch up with him.. He may be the type who wants to prove the doubters wrong.
