Day 3 of Niko, still no CSU portal action

Moving from Ft Collins to the Twin Cities would cause me to hesitate eats see big time. But going from a Rocky Mountain High to the big city may not phase these kids. Let’s see if any enter portal first then if any choose to visit the UM

I would expect word from our potential HS recruits: Jefferson, Shinholster, Ross and JoJo McIver (CSU signee) before we see portal guys. There are more moving parts now for the portal guys: Connection with coach, money, playing time and the money has to be negotiated- some of the money (revenue sharing) will have to be estimated. Most of these decisions will take a few weeks or more in the portal. You go get your starters first if you can, then the bench.

Heaven knows what's going on behind the scenes, but... I haven't heard tell whether those CSU players have said anything one way or another. Have any declared they're staying? If not, it's exactly what Medved has said, and he should be believed. It makes sense to give those guys some time to figure their situations out and decide. There's no huge rush. In the meantime, Niko's got plenty else to tend to.

Agreed. I'd imagine there will be some visits on campus this weekend and possibly get the first transfer on Monday/Tuesday. I also believe we may see some movement on CSU players today entering the portal (hopefully with DNC's). (I have no inside information just making an educated guess on the timeline).

it is a little bit early to be entering panic mode

I wouldn't be surprised if Medved ASKED those guys to take some time BECAUSE he has a lot of things to tend to here, including retaining the current roster.

In any case, nobody should be surprised with any outcome--stay or leave.

I prefer to stockpile players quickly. Especially since we have generally not been successful in drawing guys in on the backend of the window. With Ali getting the job, it probably reduces our chances of getting their players. Our advantage is more cash and higher profile. That’s nothing to sneeze at.

If you have unlimited time and opportunity, sure. But this would be the equivalent of simmering a sauce on the side while you get the meat cooking.

That's not really true. Hawkins, Patterson, we've had actually had a few guys commit here in mid to late April.
True. But we’ve also had some players who could not play Big Ten basketball on the latter end as well. I don’t envy coaches. It’s a brave and harsh new world that requires lightning speed evaluation, and very quick decisions. The ones who figure it out own the future.

It’s never too early to panic on a message board.

True but some of them were developmental throw-ins like Betts and Kleinys. Betts was recruited with the intention of redshirting him. I thought that was a bad move then and time has made it look even worse!

I’m trying to come up with a player or two that we would call developmental in Ben’s tenure that actually developed, but I can’t think of one. I would include Payne and maybe Hawkins if they stuck around, but don’t qualify based on my understanding of the terms.

Yes, the meaning of words is always very important. By "developmental" I mean a player who is not expected to contribute much in the present or near future but could gradually become a productive player to one degree or another.

Payne and Hawkins don't qualify under those terms because they were recruited with the expectation that they would be either starters or regular rotation players from the get-go. Of course, any player can "develop" further, even the very good ones.

The two I listed in the previous post fit the definition. Betts might have developed a little more had Johnson trusted him to play more often. I don't know. Given his two years as an "active" scholarship roster player, he looks like a wasted scholarship. Keinys didn't play much for Pacific this season until near the end of the year but, in the last 3 regular season games, he averaged 17 minutes and 9 points per game.

Miles Tarver?

Thankfully the number of people still hung up on the year 0 thing has dwindled to a small group but they love bringing it up....still.....8 years later.....

As for those starting to worry about the lack of incoming transfers through 3 days.....deep breaths....the portal just opened, the coach was just hired....and the vast majority of players in the portal have not found a new home yet. Many haven't even entered yet.
I mean, the Year Zero thing was petty hilarious, just like his comment that he was taking a pay cut coming here. They both rightfully have long shelf lives.

Greenlee could have been one. Had a pretty decent career starting on a final four team after he was determined by our fan base to be a “wasted” scholarship.
The thing is, we in Gopher land struggle to name a half dozen development guys over the last 25 years. In BADger world they could probably name 20...a lot of them Minnesotans. I hope that Niko, despite this being an age of free agency has a player or so per year that we end up viewing as a 4 year guy who grew into a really significant player for the program.
