Dawson Garcia - Has he become one of the best in the Country?

Drafted by the Jazz with Sloan as the coach in an era when the coach still ran the show, he said of Kris, “Kris needs to learn you have to pass the ball in this league.” Truer words never spoken. We knew it all the time.

It took Humphries some time to get going but had a reasonably long and modestly successful NBA career as a blue-collar journeyman. Ended up making about $62 million.

I really hope that if Jamison Battle can carve out an NBA role that Dawson can become a back up big man (like Garza for the Wolves)
I have to believe he will get an oppertunity as a backup, he can score, not going to be a star but he has been dominating lately.

Garcia is to this team what Kris Humphries was to the Monson team of the early 2000s. Both played on bad teams and produced individual numbers on the court.
Between Garcia and Humphries, who is the better NBA ready player?
My answer: Humphries was the better athlete and the better NBA prospect.
Both were able to play on awful Gophers teams.
Major difference between the two: DG will earn assists now and again.

Battle has quick catch and shoot ability. Not a fan of Garcia's long-range form. I'll be pulling for him to catch on and be another Gopher with NBA ties.

How do you know he was one of the cancers?
He came to watch the Gophers when he was on a short Christmas break. From what I heard his transfer was purely about a bigger paycheck for his family. If you are offered a substantial pay raise elsewhere, are you saying no?
Because I know some people directly involved. It wasn't purely money, at all. And, I have been offered a substantial pay raise and I haven't taken it. Your work is more than the money you make. People turn down addtl money all the time.

I think he could be better than Garza. Garza is a bad 3 point shooter (career 31% and it's not just a limited # of attempts as he's taken 140+ in his career). By contrast, Battle shoots it at a 42.3% clip (and envision that was a big reason why he went to OSU to take the pressure off being the primary so he could showcase he could shoot from 3). If DG is going to do any one thing to make him stick in the NBA, he should be hammering his outside shooting from the second the season ends. Joys of today's league but my hope is he could have numbers more like Battle from 3 and stick around for awhile in the league.

Matt Bonner approves🤠

Yeah if Garcia keeps working on his three point shot he could have a chance.. Micah Potter , Branden Carlson and even Liam Robbins made NBA rosters because they were decent athletes who had three point shooting and some size..
Exactly. Dawson will mix it up in the nba for a bit with his 3pt shot and height. If he's bouncing back and fourth between nba and gleague, maybe he makes a decision to go across seas and snag a better more guaranteed contract. Now will he get drafted? I would say probably not, with a team lining up to sign him moments after that 60th pick is selected. If he is drafted 45-60, a team knows what they're getting and won't wait until after the draft. Could see a team like toronto taking, or the hometown wolves.

We do miss that true PG quickness Hawkins had, he gave our bigs easy baskets. We are running combo guards, that are doing fine; but we are missing those on a team that sometimes struggles to score.

Actually Garcia is a pretty decent athlete remember he is 6’11… he runs well and he moves well laterally.. he also is pretty agile..

The non/athletic part is his jumping not great lift or a quick jumper… he will get his shot blocked at the rim or going to the rim because of his hops.. at 6’11 I don’t remember many times him catching the ball by the hoop and dunking it… he has quick feet especially for his size and good body control which are athletic traits.. as is his foot speed especially for 6’11
Dawson's size and playing style are very similar to that of Santi Aldama with the Grizzlies. He's a better overall NBA prospect than Battle IMO.

NBA Draft Update...in the Valentines Day update...Garcia does not make the top 60.
He'll have to be impressive in workouts.
It would also help immensely if the team continues to win.

Battle shot from deep at a way better clip. Think that’s by far the reason he’s in the league is his size/shooting combo. If DG could show he can bump up that 3pt % 5 points he’d have a chance to be a very enticing prospect

For sure. DG has a more diverse overall game but Battle can really shoot it from 3 and found a great roster to earn some consistent minutes.

What could've been... 🙁

I'm impressed with how Garcia has progressed since he's been on the Gophers. While somewhat quiet, he seems like a good leader. I'm not an NBA expert, but I think his size/shooting seems like a good fit. Not sure if he'll get drafted, but I think if he gets a shot, he'll end up sticking in the NBA.

Nothing shows pure athleticism more than dunking.

And every time DG gets a break away, I feel like there is a pretty good chance he is going to injure himself. I’d advise him to take the Iceman approach and just lay it in.

He will make it, with his spacing, but he needs to work on extending his range like Coffey did to make it in the NBA.

I highly doubt he will be drafted higher than the end of the second round.

You can near go wrong with the patterned Clark Kellogg finger roll; my go-to as a 5’11 PF😃

Always feels like there is another gear in his game that for whatever reason he just doesn't go to all that often. It was on full display in the second half against UCLA though as he was unstoppable.

Dawson had a real "WHOA" move in the 2nd half when we were making the comeback.

Caught the ball on the left wing, and just went HARD baseline straight to the cup for a full speed layup. Blew right by his man and beat the help coming from the weak side.

One of the more explosive plays I can remember him ever making. Dawson can be really good with his patient jab step and fake game, but hopefully he can bring out those "get of my way, I'm going immediately and not waiting for the double to come" plays more often down the stretch.

For some reason Garcia and Battle just never had much chemistry and always seemed to be getting in each other's way out there. Seems weird because they are both 3 level scorers but it was just an awkward fit.

Both being left handed players might've had something to do with it. They seemed to prefer and occupy similar spots on the floor.

Keep waiting for the "I'm the best player on the court" thing to click in his head. Most nights he is the best or one of the best players out there but he doesn't always play that way. He is unselfish which is a good quality but there are times when he needs to just tell everyone to get the hell out of his way... :)

The place I remember the next gear most clearly was the game at Ohio State last year. It appeared to be something personal between him and Battle.

It’s scheduled to click in for the remainder of the year🥳

Offensively ok, but Battle scored best when playing vs PF. Battle also is too slow too guard a sf.
