Clearly the best player on our team. Easily one of the best in the Big Ten.....but are we getting to the point where he should be viewed as one of the best players in the entire country?

He is frustrating because at times he is way too passive but holy crap he can take over a game when he wants to and when he does he is a matchup nightmare for teams with his ability to attack the basket while also being able to knock down 3s.

I don't really follow things all that closely beyond the Big Ten but gotta think Garcia is establishing himself as one of the best in the Nation and would seem like a lock to get drafted.

Most amazing thing about his success this year is that he is really the only offensive threat the Gophers have, which is a scenario other teams should be able to game plan for pretty easily.

He's a really good college player. I don't see him as athletic enough to play at the next level. I agree that it's a shame a better team was not formed around him.

Actually Garcia is a pretty decent athlete remember he is 6’11… he runs well and he moves well laterally.. he also is pretty agile..

The non/athletic part is his jumping not great lift or a quick jumper… he will get his shot blocked at the rim or going to the rim because of his hops.. at 6’11 I don’t remember many times him catching the ball by the hoop and dunking it… he has quick feet especially for his size and good body control which are athletic traits.. as is his foot speed especially for 6’11

Yes...that's his main weakness. He's a very fluid athlete, but not an explosive leaper.

Back to the original question- unequivocal yes is my answer. He's doing all of this on great efficiency while every team is keying on him. It's been fun to watch, and I'm grateful/thankful he decided to come back for another season.

Really hope he gets drafted and get a chance in the NBA. But if not, his game is tailor made to thrive in the EuroLeague. Play in front of massive energetic crowds, make bank, play high level of ball and see the world...pretty good deal.

Garcia is to this team what Kris Humphries was to the Monson team of the early 2000s. Both played on bad teams and produced individual numbers on the court.
Between Garcia and Humphries, who is the better NBA ready player?
My answer: Humphries was the better athlete and the better NBA prospect.
Both were able to play on awful Gophers teams.

I understand your point, but in reality, there is no comparison in terms of their benefit to winning. Humphries was all about putting up numbers and getting his shots. His assist numbers were mind-bogglingly low. He simply never pass the ball. Garcia seems to be a great teammate, rebounds, plays defense, and absolutely moves the ball when he’s doubled or when there’s an open man. He doesn’t force things, even when he should because of a lack of talent around him. A perfect example last night was the first layup by Patterson where he had the ball and three Bruins hedged his way. He swung the ball to Patterson who drove for the wide open layup.

Humphries was the better prospect because he put up big numbers when he was 18/19. Garcia will not be a top 15 pick.

Who will be better in the NBA? It's hard to say. Humphries had a nice career but Garcia is clearly a much more skilled player.

Garcia's numbers this year are also considerably different than Humphries' numbers. Garcia is shooting the ball considerably less and passing the ball considerably more than Humphries. By the eye test, and every advanced metric, Kris Humphries was a black hole here. Garcia simply is not.
  • Garcia has more assists than turnovers. Kris Humphries had 4X as many turnovers as assists.
  • Garcia leads the team in shots, but he averages 2.5 more shots than Patterson, and 4 more shots than Mitchell. Humphries averages more than 8 shots more per game than the 2nd most voluminous shooter (Mo Hargrow).

I never thought Coffey would make it in the NBA. Too mechanical. I think Garcia might have played his way into the second round.

Mechanical maybe as he was forced (by personnel and his dad's wishes) to play PG his junior season.

As a wing, which he was always going to be in the NBA, his ball skills are an asset.

Besides all the discussed factors, he has an outstanding attitude. Not arrogant, but intensely confident. He is a great teammate. He cares about others. He is super knowledgeable about hoops. No matter what happens he will enjoy a successful and rewarding life and be loved by many.
He has also chiseled himself into the hearts and memories of the non-Eyore Gopher fans, by coming back for his senior year and providing some excellent play and dominating performances.

He is currently second 19.7 ppg to Martinelli (NW) 19.8 ppg. How cool would it be for him to lead the conference in scoring and get us to a .500 in conference play and earn first team All B10 honors and honorable mention AA?

We’re on the precipice of possibly an unforgettable 6 game flourish to end the season.

Drafted by the Jazz with Sloan as the coach in an era when the coach still ran the show, he said of Kris, “Kris needs to learn you have to pass the ball in this league.” Truer words never spoken. We knew it all the time.

Oh, I think he will. He's on some draft boards now (2nd rounder) and lots of players end up spending time in the NBA as undrafted free agents.

I think he can play in the NBA. I have not always been impressed with his "want to" but he has shown a ton of improvement on both ends of the court since earlier in the season. If he could improve his 3 point shot, that would help a ton.

It's too bad the Gophers couldn't run last year's team back one more time. If Christie had developed, as expected, this would be a top 25 team looking to make a Sweet 16 run.

Sure, but we can't keep crying about that. Plus, it's still possible that this year's team will accomplish more than last year's team when it's all said and done. I actually think our biggest offseason loss was Payne.

Humphries was known as the Black Hole for a reason.

Johnson gave an endorsement on radio show. Says he’s legit 6’11” and how hard it is to score in college basketball when they pack the lane.

Agreed. Weak inside play and rebounding have hurt this team. Payne would have been an upgrade in both departments.

He was also one of the cancers among that group last year. He wanted to be featured offensively and that's not who he is as a player.

How do you know he was one of the cancers?
He came to watch the Gophers when he was on a short Christmas break. From what I heard his transfer was purely about a bigger paycheck for his family. If you are offered a substantial pay raise elsewhere, are you saying no?

I really hope that if Jamison Battle can carve out an NBA role that Dawson can become a back up big man (like Garza for the Wolves)
