Dave Telep ranks Tyus Jones #9 overall for 2014, #1 PG

The bottom line is if he does grow more, say gets to 6'1" does anyone really think he's coming to the U?

Quite frankly, the ONLY way he stays in Mn is if he has stopped growing. He gets to 6'3 or so and it's hello, UNC, Duke, Kansas etc.

2-3" inches isn't going to keep him in MN. If he's going to an elite program he's going regardless of whether he is 6'1 or 6'4.

Rickert did not sign his LOI but did committ to UA. Then mom and dad wanted him to stay close to home so he stayed. So to say he saw an opportunity to "be the man" is a huge exagerration.

As the #8 player in the nation, the strategy of staying "home so mom and dad can watch you play" is indeed a quality strategy. It was tried and true 11 years ago......so there is a history.

I stand corrected.

Rickert and Humphries signed LOI's elsewhere and only came back when it became known they could run the program.

Aren't you sort of contradicting yourself there? And I'll go out on a limb and assume you were being sarcastic with the last statement. There's a pretty big reason 5 star players don't stay in Minnesota every year, and it's not because they want to go elsewhere. It's because Minnesota rarely has 5 star players. Saying Tyus isn't likely to stay home because one of the last times it happened was about 11 years ago doesn't really hold up in this situation. It would if we produced 5-stars every year, but we don't.

I'm not sure it's a contradiction but the fact Rickert hadn't signed is an incorrect statement. Rickert didn't come back here to "be the man" as someone intimated and Humphries was my reference point to running the program.

The point on all this is a bit lost. I really hope if Jone's pans out and is as highly regarded as a senior that he'll sign with Mn. The fact is history says he most likely won't.

Hope I wrong.

The history I'm familiar with is Tubby Smith getting the instate players that he wants, including a 5-star. Let's just hope that Welch and Hollins give us solid guard play and allow us to make a run in the tournament. That would be very beneficial for recruiting.

If he is as good as advertised, he is a one and done anyway. If he thinks he is a one and done, he would be a fool to come here. A lot would have to change with MN program for Jones to come here. Tubby's star isn't as bright as it was when White signed here. The results have been disappointing. Even with better results (a sweet 16 appearance or two)the odds of reeling in a top 10 players are low.

Thanks for your expertise, I guess we'll stop recruiting him now. By the way, which NBA team's are expected to draft Harrison Barnes and Jared Sullinger this year?

The decision for Barnes and Sullinger to not declare is much more about the proposed NBA lockout and less about their ability to play in the NBA. This next draft is very weak and both of those two players would have been top 5 picks.

Understood, there have been other examples where players could be one and done and choose to stay in school though. I just think it's dumb to determine that someone is one and done when he's not even a sophomore in high school yet. Nobody knows how long he'll be in school for right now, not even Tyus.

Sure it could happen. However, the list of top 100 national players who have stayed in Mn to pursue football, baseball, basketball over the past 25 years is a very short list I can come up Rodney Williams and maybe the Fake Thug. There have been some who have transferred back to finish their career (or play their year) but the reality is the top national recruits want to play for a contender with a great tradition.

Joel Przybilla was a top 10 recruit in the nation I believe. I know he was recruited by Kansas because I saw the recruiting letter. He chose the Gophers.

You are welcome. I never said to stop recruiting him. If you don't want to hear the truth, I suggest you slide right by my posts. By the way, I don't think we would have done as well this year without Cory Joseph. Too bad he is leaving us after one year.

Exactly. His argument is basically asking how many 5 stars have stayed in MN. Well, considering we rarely have 5 stars and had NCAA violations hurting recruiting as well as Monson...

I am not trying to be a dickhead. I am just being honest. If Tyus is a top 10 or top 5 player with a very good chance to play in the NBA, MN's chances diminish considerably on signing him. Nowadays, kids play all over in AAU, not just locally. They get exposed to playing away from home so staying at home is less important. Teams like Kentucky, Kansas and NC are made for these players that expect to play one or two years at most in college.

Sorry if that offends anyone.

You are going to make a comparison to Cory Joseph? The reason why we have a shot at Tyus is because he is an in-state talent. I didn't realize that Cory went attended high school here in MN, and don't say that his brother being here made much of a difference. Clearly Devoe did little to sway him and it was made apparent by the fact that he was unhappy here and ultimately decided to transfer.

I really wonder which of u bloggers go out and evaluate this homegrown talent urselfs I'm at games every weekend Tyus is a great player for his age bball iq is unbelievable but one and done come on the gophers have a very good chance of landing him if they make the right moves leading up to it...if we play the way we been playin he'll be a Badger..bottom line is no one wants to play for a loser

I read that Tyus' dad is 6'6", so all signs are that he would grow at least to 6'3" or more. NOthing is certain.

His brother Jaidee played for Wofford and Minnesota State and he was about the same height as his brother or maybe a little taller, but not much.

I know that nobody wants to hear this but I think that Iowa will be in the mix as well. His mother's boyfriend is dating Duez Henderson (former Iowa player).

Iowa won't be in the mix. This is a kid who can go anywhere he wants. If hes not going to NC, UK, KU, UT,Duke, Syracuse, hes going to the U of M.

How did Kris Humphries commit to a loser then?

You think Humphries committed to the U because of the recruiting job the Gophers did? He came to the U because it was a program that would allow him to take all the shots he wanted without any fear of repercussion. That's the only reason. You think he was gonna walk into Duke and get that type of rope? No way.

Ok thats what I was actually looking for. So why wouldn't Tyus join the gophers for the same reason? Tubby worships him, most of us do, and we aren't exactly the greatest team at the moment. Almost the same situation.

Completely different players. Not saying Jones is going to better but he most likely will never be as selfish as Humphries et al.

I believe you meant to say that Tyus' mother is dating Duez Henderson. You may have a scoop is his mother's boyfriend is dating Duez Henderson.

Kris Humphries
Rick Rickert
Joel Przybilla
Sam Jacobson (?)
Shane Schilling (?)
Kevin Lynch (?)
Mike Bauer (?)

Add somewhere between 3-7 more to your list.

And don't forget...Miles Tarver was a guy who played with a top-100 recruit in high school.
