Dave Telep ranks Tyus Jones #9 overall for 2014, #1 PG

Tyus has the potential to be the #1 overall prospect. Hope he comes to MN, would be a huge boost to the program. Tubby clearly wants him. Hopefully an NCAA run or two can convince him.

Also, only 2 of the top 25 has verbaled anywhere ... both are to Indiana.

Any idea how tall he is? ESPN says 5'11" but the Strib story says 6'1". He's definitely still at an age where he can grow.

Regardless, I believe I read Jon Leuer was 5-10 at Tyus' age. He grew another foot.

If Tyus grows even more, with the skills he has now, look out.

Hopefully if he is done growing though, he is closer to 6-1 (either way though, I obviously hope he is a Gopher!)

Tyus

I read that Tyus' dad is 6'6", so all signs are that he would grow at least to 6'3" or more. NOthing is certain.

I stood right next to him at the Howard Pulley Invite. He was very close to my height, but I would say he was about an inch shorter and I'm about 6'2". I'd say 6'1" is definitely more accurate than 5'11".

The bottom line is if he does grow more, say gets to 6'1" does anyone really think he's coming to the U?

Quite frankly, the ONLY way he stays in Mn is if he has stopped growing. He gets to 6'3 or so and it's hello, UNC, Duke, Kansas etc.

He's from Minnesota, some kids have pride for their hometown. If Tyus chooses Minnesota he would be far from the first one to choose us over a bigger school.

Very True.

However, I think MN needs an NCAA run or two in the next couple of years and 1-2 players getting drafted, at least one in the first round.

Players usually do want to go to their home state, but they also want to have a legitimate chance to have success in college and go to the NBA. If Tyus does not think MN offers those things at a quality level, he will go to a school that does. UNC, UK, MSU, etc etc etc have all proven they can do this.

MN has a few years to show they can as well under Tubby Smith.

I think those things are very important as well. If we can make even a small run in the tournament next season it will be huge for recruiting in general. We need to prove we can compete at a high level when it counts.

Sure it could happen. However, the list of top 100 national players who have stayed in Mn to pursue football, baseball, basketball over the past 25 years is a very short list I can come up Rodney Williams and maybe the Fake Thug. There have been some who have transferred back to finish their career (or play their year) but the reality is the top national recruits want to play for a contender with a great tradition.

Baseball and football are completely irrelevant in this discussion. We're talking about basketball. Royce could have gone to a lot of different schools that are considered better basketball programs, but he had passion for his city and he wanted to bring the Gophers to the top. Kris Humphries is another player who could have gone almost anywhere (almost went to Duke), but decided to play for Minnesota. It's not unheard of for top players to stay home even if their home state school doesn't have as rich of a tradition as other schools recruiting them.

Kris Humphries
Rick Rickert
Joel Przybilla
Sam Jacobson (?)
Shane Schilling (?)
Kevin Lynch (?)
Mike Bauer (?)

Add somewhere between 3-7 more to your list.

A top 3 BT finish and a Sweet 16 run or better will be a big help. We need Gopher hoops to captivate the MN market sooner rather than later. Oh, and I believe the development of Andre Hollins will be important as well. If he can develop into one of the better guards in the BT, that certainly won't hurt our chances with Tyus' recruitment.

Go Gophers!!

Well then..

Rickert and Humphries signed LOI's elsewhere and only came back when it became known they could run the program. White never played a tick. When I'm talking top players it's not John Thomas?????? It's the Khalid's of the world. I love the argument we don't want to talk about football or baseball recruiting cuz this is a bb forum. Could it be because EVERY top 20 recruit in the history of the state has turned their backs on their home state from a FB standpoint?

While you choose to be provincial in your "analysis" of my comments; I still ask; Beyond begging via the emotional "mommy and daddy get to see you play" why would a top 10 recruit want to come to the U? Is it to sit and listen to the lousy student section boo like last year or sit in the same place the Romans fed the Catholics to the Lions? Maybe it's to look at all the FF 4 banners.

Sarcasm aside, the top players want to go to a program that develops players, has great facilities, WINS etc.

Oh and that list of top 100 players. I would LOVE to see the recruiting site that listed all of those players as top 100 recruits.

Guess I will sit back and hope that Jones doesn't grow and his game flat lines so he'll come to the U in four years because others aren't interested as it's our best shot....OR how about this; build a facility, win some games, have a coach that signs his contract and then GIVE the kid a reason to think this is a place for him to have not just personal success (Rickert, Humphries) but team success.

Then even though Jones is 6'3 or whatever we won't have to belittle ourselves (see Henderson's recruitment) to have a top 10 player on our squad. He'll come here because he preceives it as a great opportunity.

1. Humphries and Rickert saw they could be the man at Minnesota? That supports our argument, not yours. Tyus could be the man here too.

2. Why does it matter if White played or not? We're not talking about their success once they get here, we're talking about top players signing with the Gophers. He did that.

3. Do you seriously not see why football and baseball aren't relevant? It has nothing to do with what forum we're on. It has everything to do with the fact that Tyus is a BASKETBALL player and we're hoping that he signs to play with the BASKETBALL team. How is the success of basketball recruiting dependent on our football or baseball team's success? How is Duke's football team? Do thier players give a $h!t? No, they don't, becuase they're committing to play BASKETBALL.

4. Your arguments are terrible.

Rickert and Humphries signed LOI's elsewhere and only came back when it became known they could run the program.

You can rationalize it any way you choose to suit your agenda, but the fact is that neither of those players suited up or played college basketball for any school other than the University of Minnesota. Period.

When I'm talking top players it's not John Thomas?????? It's the Khalid's of the world.

Oh, so when you said "Top 100 players", what you really meant was "Top players according to the Gospel of Duthasmon Smith"? Good to know.

I love the argument we don't want to talk about football or baseball recruiting cuz this is a bb forum. Could it be because EVERY top 20 recruit in the history of the state has turned their backs on their home state from a FB standpoint?

The recruiting histories of the football and baseball programs at Minnesota have as much to do with Tyus Jones as David Cutcliffe has to do with Kyle Singler, Nolan Smith, Kyrie Irving, Austin Rivers, etc., etc.

Oh and that list of top 100 players. I would LOVE to see the recruiting site that listed all of those players as top 100 recruits.

Did you happen to notice the "?" behind each of the pre-2002 players (except Przybilla)? That is because they pre-dated the commonly accepted recruiting sites like Rivals and Scout. It would be difficult to come to a consensus on these types of players, but it is certain that all were players with multiple high-major offers, and could be considered in the discussion for top 100 for their respective seasons. What is unquestionable is that, by any standard, Humphries, Rickert and Przybilla were all top 100 players. Unless, of course, in the case of Przybilla, you'd like to make the argument that a McDonald's All-American isn't a top 100 player, which I would love to hear. But, then again, none of these players suit your agenda, so they don't count, right?

OR how about this; build a facility, win some games, have a coach that signs his contract and then GIVE the kid a reason to think this is a place for him to have not just personal success (Rickert, Humphries) but team success.

That's all the easier it is? Why hasn't anyone thought of this before? Alert the media!

Tyus Jones could shrink a couple inches and he'd still be a 5 star player.

I guess because the psychic says so... I was going to respond to your posts but then I kept reading and became too overwhelmed by the ridiculousness of them. I'm glad other people responded.

Not ridiculous at all. But living in denial is easier than the truth. The fact is our main recruiting sales point will be "play close to home". That's the bottomline.

Just for clarification, Rickert did not sign a LOI with anyone but Minnesota.
