I have always thought Dave Mona to be a great marketing mind. How does he and the U market this new staff that is clearly a dissapointment to a lot of people?

He is, really??!! Hmm.

As for Kill, how do you put lipstick on a pig?? The only way this or any hire works is if the guy succeeds. There's no selling this guy. He's like the guy you hire w/o the credentials, style, panache and the "looks the part" elements, but works his ass off and delivers. It ain't always pretty, but works. If he does that, all is well. That said, when he slips, you can't wait to cut him loose. So, he'll need to get at least 7 wins next year and go up from there to stick around-a very short leash...what's left of the fan base will be totally gone if not.

You lost me

I have lived all but 5 years of my life in MN. Those 5 were in Iowa City at U of Iowa. I was watching this search because they made me believe that the U was going to become a force. They were going to hire an awesome coach. I was going to want to take my kids to TCF stadium.

I was willing to root for the goofers. I have always been a U bball fan since Lynch, Newburn, Burton and Coffee. I am disappointed in this hire. It does not make me want to get involved.

I guess off to Kinnick it is with the kids.

Child abuse!

Not all bad

I can take them to Williams Arena. Maybe even catch a hockey game. No football though.

Did Kill already go 2-10 next season? Geez, talk about a defeatist attitude.

Just win baby

Agreed, but isn't this how any new hire ought to be evaluated? I'm in the 'wait and see' camp. I don't care how sexy the name is; I think I speak for all Gopher fans when I say that at the end of the day I want to WIN. All the other BS falls into place if this guy wins.

Mona will need to develop or have ready tomorrow, a three tiered marketing plan. First to current season ticket holders, second to potential fans, and finally to the team and recruits. This will take the talent of the entire Leo Burnett Company.

Lost Me

It is not about if Kill will be successful. Reading the articles, I would love to have him for my neighbor. I think in a few years 7-5 is going to happen. My point was since I am not an U of M alum, that this type of hire doesn't energize me. It doesn't make me believe that I need season tickets now so in a few years I will have my spot locked up. This is about money. The U of M needs non-Alumni to be excited also. They need the money to try and get the Athletic program to self sustaining.

Lets say Kill is successful in 4 or 5 years. Gets the program for 5-7, 6-6, 6-6, 7-5 and than 8-4. That means for most non-Alumni it will be 4 or 5 years before the program is in a place that we will want to jump the bandwagon.

Just my opinion.

Bald, bad teeth, kinda funny looking, southern accent, jeans and cowboy hat, not afraid to say God is a big part of his everyday life and success. A marketer's dream for the Twin Cities! Could there be a better fit?

Personally I like him more than I like the Twin Cities, but good luck selling him in the short term. If he wins though, he could be HUGE in the long run in the City of the Bland. People love a character, but only if he wins.

ROTFLMAO!! Thank you for the laugh, I needed that.

THIS is exactly why it is an antithetical hire. He seems to be a darling, but he is being hired by the man who was taken in by Brewster.

Where will Gopher Nation be if his cancer decides to return? (screwed)

Agreed, He definitely does not have the name recognition and because of that alot of people are not enthused about him. It doesn't matter who comes in here if he wins he stays, if not he's gone in 4-5 years, but patience is running thin with the fan base and I don't think he's going to have long or the fan base will shrink rapidly in my opinion.
