Dave Mona said 90% chance Claeys named full time coach this week

No he wouldn't even be considered by "the likes of Illinois or Maryland". They both will be able to land someone with a better resume and bigger profile than Tracy Claeys.

Is that right? Source?

The hire at both schools will either be a Group of 5 head coach or a Power 5 coordinator. I very much doubt that in either case it will be someone with an objectively better resume and/or bigger profile.

How dare he pad his record beating bad teams that we has forced to play! Sorry I hate this argument. Reminds me of Doogie's always citing Tubby's record 'not counting Iowa'.

They count as wins, but my point is that the poster previous to me compared him to Holtz and Warmath.
In those two years that Gutey won 5 Big Ten games, he finished 6-6 overall and 6-5 overall.

Hardly the caliber of coach who won national titles.

If I recall those years correctly, the Big Ten was pretty much split between good teams and teams that sucked, and we just sucked a little less than the rest of the suck those years.

I agree with you with on where the hires will come from both schools. Illinois and Maryland should be able to hire head coaches from a Group of 5 school.

FWIW: Gutekunst: 1986 5-3 B1G (tied 3rd). Non-conf gms vs. Oklahoma, Bowling Green & Pacific = played Tennessee in bowl game.
1988: 4-4 B1G Non-conf vs. Iowa State, Nebraska and Indiana St.
1990: 5-3 B1G non-conf Utah, Iowa State, Nebraska

Maybe Not a great coach, but posted some credible records against (arguably) stronger schedules than other Gopher coaches have faced (or been willing to face).

Good God man, stop speaking in code, are you saying Maryland is going after Mark Mangino or are they re-hiring Ralph Friedgen?!?

Someone already mentioned Brock, Michael Carter appeared in a couple preseason game, Troy Stoudermire was signed by the Bengals, Simoni Lawrence played for the Bears and the Bucs, Traye Simmons with the Chargers. Duane Bennett and Eric Lair had rookie contracts with the Packers

Kill would also include Derrick Wells with the Bucs.

Brewster was an awful coach for the most part. But if all of those guys had NFL chances it's probably not due entirely to Kill coaching up talentless hacks.

I certainly may have missed more from Kill and Brewster so feel free to fill in others too.

I was trying to list players that were either on an active roster or practice squad at the start of an NFL season. I don't believe any of the guys you listed were.

going back to the original title, the U wouldn't make the announcement on a game day, would they?

I'd hold out for the league champion from the Group of 5.

This is my only concern. I LIKE Tracy Claeys and think he has done an admirable job as or Defensive Coordinator. Can he take the next step? I just don't know but Gutekunst has scared me A LOT! #flashback

Hire him in two weeks?

Let him squirm just a bit. Can't hurt.

But let's be honest here: we have no choice.

at least it will be easier to track TC's whereabouts vs the imagined candidates from the last search. Lordy, that was good fun. searches are some of the best entertainment on this board

dpodoll68's trip to the airport still makes me smile when I think about it. Classic.

That's not exactly true. I'm pretty sure if we wanted to we could snag one of the MAC coaches up for a 'promotion' (Carey, Babers, etc) or even make a surprise hire of a P5 coach who might not be happy with his present situation. But do we want to?

Considering it is Friday evening, I find Mr Mona's claim a bit dubious...
