Dark Horse for CFP?

Yeah the schedule but the thing is MN doesn't have any of the success that gives them the benefit of the doubt if there is any other team with a similar record with the slightest better recent history.

The schedule is the reason they'd be considered ... but also the reason to deny them.

The thing about it is even if you have a weak schedule and pile up wins you still need to be good enough (or lucky enough) to win the B1G title game.

You can't win it if you don't get to it. One could argue that a team would be better off with the easy schedule and hope that the likes of an OSU has an off night. It almost worked for the hogeyes last year except they lost the B1G title game and that whole Rose Bowl thing backfired on them a bit. Sort of the reverse of what happened to the skunks the previous year.

I remember someone did a meta analysis of NFL schedules. They found the weaker the regular season opponents the more likely you'd win a super bowl. Teams with the the top (I want to say it was top 5) most difficult schedules on a year to year basis had never won a super bowl the same year they had that schedule. They limited it to teams who made the playoffs so it wasn't like the tough schedule teams were knocked out of the playoffs outright. Every team included was in the playoffs so they had a shot.

It certainly implied that an easier regular season path had payoffs super bowl wise, and a difficult path made it nigh impossible.

Granted this was a while ago, not sure if it still applies to the NFL.

I don't know if it really applies to CFB as the difference between the good and bad teams is so high that I think once you face someone serious good you can just get steamrolled unexpectedly for being overconfident or simply getting outmatched where you thought you were doing fine. (seemed to happen to Iowa...)

Having said that for a team like the Gophers where maybe not everyone is super confident, woop'n even a bad team has to help, and we've hung tight against some good teams before... there's a chance in those games.

Agreed. Under the previous system though a team could have an easy schedule and make the BCS by just the record. It's a good thing to have another check along the way in the form of the Conference Champ game, but makes it tougher for a program like MN to capitalize on those easy schedules.

Is Pete the guy we have been ripping for years here because he was a hack and knew nothing about football?

I rip him to shreds every chance I get. I know that everyone makes mistakes, but the one he made was the worst I've ever seen (for a guy that makes his living because he supposedly knows about college football). If you don't know what I'm talking about, Google Pete Fiutak/Matt James.

I know what you are saying. I am just waiting for the love fest because he said something nice about the Gophers. I get so tired of of the bashing because someone writes something unfavorable about Minnesota. There is no hidden anti Gopher agenda out there. We haven't been very good over the last 20 years so why would the media reflect something different?

The Gophers by game 10 will be considered " America's Team" We will be this year's "Bad News Bears" We may get Game Day because Lee Corso has always wanted to spin Goldy's head. Add the best uniforms in college football. A band who takes second fiddle to none and has one of the best signature songs in college football ( The Swinging Gate/ Battle Hymn of the Republic) that brings a tear to a glass eye. Throw in the National Championship Dance Line and an award winning mascot you have a team America will root for against any and all.

Well said and I really hope you are right!!!

"We" haven't been doing anything here for years. You've been posting here for slightly longer than the lifespan of a housefly.

Ok. Fine. The posters here have been ripping him for years. Back from the college football news days. But let's nitpick one small detail instead of focusing on the overall point.

Is the overall point that you're a terrible poster and an enormous tool?

My point is everyone here loves anyone who says something nice about the Gophers. If a writer or hack says something honest that may be construed as negative then that person knows nothing about football. It may even be a conspiracy against the University of Minnesota. When a school has been as bad at football as we have why should people bull**** the situation?

You're a little off. While some criticize every article, most just get irritated at a select few local and former local writers who seem to get a joy out of watching the Gophers struggle. You have a local writer who essentially says the same thing over and over, that the Gophers suck. You have a former local writer who hates the Gophers and it's obvious in his one-sided stories. You have a few reporters for the local newspaper who last fall wrote a story about the football team and sexual misconduct, then their sports editor went on a tirade on twitter to tell us "what a mess it is" and acted like there was more to it then there really is. Because since that we haven't heard a damn thing about it.

The "hack" references are generally towards a select few, not everyone that says anything negative about the Gophers.

Ok. But plenty of nasty things have been posted here about Pete.

So now it is crystal clear that Flutak was so terrified about being vilified on the GH that he wrote that very brief article to get back in the good graces of the GH.
And yes dpod I know I am the scum of the earth and yes Ruppert we are leaving our UP cabin after an idyllic two week stay and I am just taking down the Badger flag.

Feel free to start a poll on whether I'm a terrible poster and an enormous tool. I'm anxious to see the results.
