In the portal era, redshirting seems geared to help players that need to develop physically to play at the strength and intensity level of the B1G. Lineman most obvious. QB's in many cases, too, because their role includes extraordinary mental responsibility and learning. But if you have a kid who is actually ready to play physically at a skill position, can do the job (in the case of RBs, also remaining home and blocking on some passing plays) and can perhaps give you better options than an older and/or badly nicked up player, I think a coach is cheating the team by not letting the younger, capable, uninjured FR or RS FR see the field. Only explanation is that the kid is so good, we fear getting "Buckied" again by Oregon or someone. Winning teams don't have that scaredy cat mentality, though. They play the kids who can best help them win.
