Dante' Butler

Scout.com says he runs a 4.74 40-yard... no thanks

Maurice Clarett was slower and did ok at Ohio State. Arian Foster ran a 4.69 at the END of his college career. Not saying he's the fastest guy out there, but sometimes the number doesn't tell the whole story.

I don't know anything about this kid, but that is sort of an arbitrary reason to dismiss him. There are tons of college running backs who ran in the mid 4.6's when they went to the NFL. His 40 time shouldn't be the main concern.

He's durable - 337 rushes this last year. He plowed some guys over pretty good in the highlights. Only 4 receptions in 2010, though. They probably just didn't pass much, but it makes you wonder. And 4.74 in the 40 - not the greatest but he appears to be a bull and he will get bigger and faster. I can see why we are interested. Does he have anyone else interested in him?

He has a offer from Arizona.

Okay that's fair... 4.74 seemed just really slow. I guess it was arbitrary.

Toby Gerhart ran a 4.60 at the combine and was drafted in the 2nd round...Anthony Dixon ran a 4.75 and was drafted in the 6th round by San Fran...

Power Back

Now that Womble has committed to NIU, perhaps this is the power back the Gophers need and has been discussed here over the past few days. I wonder if they have enough schollies to recruit one smaller superfast "jitterbug/scatback" type of running back, as well as more of a "move the pile" type of bruiser? The Gophers are not that deep at the RB position that they couldn't use both types IMO.

Absolutely. I think we are in a position where we could use a RB in this class (power running back) and even add another JuCo guy. It would just be really nice to go into the 2012 season with an upperclassmen at the RB position who is helping out Kirkwood, Edwards (?), and possibly this kid.

Seems like a smaller, faster Gary Russell. The time does not seem faster, but no one was gaining on him from behind on those runs. Arm tackles do not stop him.

A running back does not need to take it to the house and be able to outrun the defense on every play. I'm sure if you talk to a lot of football coaches in the nation many of them would be happy with a stud that is able to take it between the tackles while breaking through arm tackles and wearing down the defense over the course of a game. You can always use a little thunder with the lightning or visa versa. I don't know about you people, but when I played football I would've rather tackled the light and quick guy over the rumblin' tumblin' tank coming through the hole. Lol
