Dan Hurley - love him or hate him?

It’s getting close to a Bobby Knight act, which I could live without. For some coaches the behavior is a show like professional wrestling. I don’t get that with him. He strikes as close to unhinged.

Stole my post; stole my thoughts! I appreciate him as a coach and program builder, but I don't appreciate boorish behavior by anyone. That's a choice. It's fine to have a little edge to you, but... The Bobby Knight comparison is apt and one I was going to make myself.

I'm kinda in the mildly annoyed stage at this point. But it could get old and annoying fast though, especially if he's not winning big.

He loves when the attention squarely on himself and as Nuts put it perfectly the sport needs villains.

All winning coaches have a good chunk of narcissism in them. You have to be laser focused, able to ignore and walk over those who oppose you, and demand that those on your team rise to the same level of passion for winning.
Most of us are not cut out for such things. If you're not competing against him I am sure he's probably a fun guy to hang around with.

I now know why staff comes around and always pushes everyone out right after a game. I guess Creighton allows folks to hang around.

Interesting actions from somebody who claims to be a devout Catholic. I thought Pride was one of the seven deadly sins?

But what do I know, I'm a lapsed Jew.

How about a third option? Don't care about him.
That would be my vote as well. I don't care enough about College Basketball in general to formulate an opinion one way or another on Hurley.

I've never seen him coach a game on TV that wasn't either the Big East Championship or in the NCAA Tournament.

He was quoted “ as being the best college coach in America”. What more would you expect?

One of these days he's going to get his clocked cleaned, people are crazy in today's environment.

Until Hurley's players start lining up with allegations of verbal or physical abuse, he's not in the same stratosphere as Knight.

Verbal abuse from a coach lol. Should Izzo be fired? Or damn near every successful coach?
Post mortem KDS. You can't make it up :ROFLMAO:

Not a good chunk. An extreme chunk. A total chunk.

To be elite in this profession...you need to be a giant fucking asshole almost without fail

The Hurley boys are good coaches, but also A$$holes on the court. I have been to ASU games numerous times, and Bobby has never, ever agreed with a call against his team. He stomps his feet, waves his arms wildly, and constantly complains to the officials. At times he will even have his players refuse to shake hands with the other team after the game, as is custom. A little class goes a long way, and the Hurley boys don’t have it. UCONN ignores it because of their success. But both Dan and Bobby are jerks.

Knight, Gene Keady, Jud Heathcote, Lou "the 'do" Henson, Johnny Orr, Dean Smith, John Thompson, Rick Pitino, Jim Boeheim, Louie Carnesseca, Larry Brown, Billy Tubbs, Al McGuire, Wimp Sanderson, Coach K, Dean Smith, Bobby Cremins, Eddie Sutton, Clem the Gem, Lute Olson, George Raveling, Jim Valvano, Gary Williams, Bob Huggins, Denny Crum, Digger Phelps, Roy Williams, Jim Calhoun, Tark the Shark.

Coming up as a fan in the golden years of college basketball not only provided the experience of getting to know players over the course of 3-4 years, but also coaches who were on the marquee because of hate, affection, bemusement. I particularly loathed Knight and Coach K through their entire runs and loathed others at various times depending upon circumstances.

Hurley may be an asshat, but college basketball (as all sports) needs its villains (as Xerxes said) and due to the peripatetic nature of college hoopsters these days, it's gotta be the coaches (can anyone loath Cooper Flagg on the same level as they did Christian Laettner or JJ Redick?)
