Damn, Hasan Lipscomb, headed to JUCO

This isn't a shocking event considering the fact that Lipscomb is a transplant to Houston due to Hurricane Katrina. I feel that it was thought that this was a possibility the whole time. I heard somewhere that the majority of his school records from New Orleans were destroyed. This is a situation that Brewster had to take a chance because Lipscomb is too good of a player not to take a chance on.

good point grunkie. i never gave thought that this probably does happen everywhere. i guess i get confused when these young men have an opportunity to plya college football and have school paid for but can't do it because they did not put in enough effort in HS. i am not placing all of the blame on them but lets all be honest. regardless of how s****y your HS, if you put in a little bit of effort you will get into college.

This stuff pisses me off, it is not that hard to become eligible for the U of M or most State College's for that matter. How stupid are these kids? SCHOOL FIRST . . . FOOTBALL SECOND.

They have had countless examples of people before them who have done the same thing. You would think that they might think, hmmmm I am talented enough to play D-1 Football, maybe just maybe I should focus on my studies so that when the time comes I am eligible to play D-1 football.

I am so sick and tired of stupid athletes instead of STUDENT ATHLETES! :(

Takes the fun out of D-1 athletics for me when I hear this stuff, would rather go watch real student athletes in the MIAC. Kids who take their studies just as serious as there academics.

Didn't Patrick Reusse "call this one" about 6 months ago? It sounded like Reusse had some inside info at the time.

Yes he did. When the Gray trouble started last summer, we had two four star commits- Lipscomb and Eric Stephens (who wound up committing to Texas Tech). His quote was something to the effect that if you think our 2008 class was bad academically, Lipscomb and Stephens would take the cake.

Why has he quit trying to take the exam? Couldn't he take it again before school starts?

I am disappointed that Lipscomb has to go the JUCO route, and I hope the staff is in on a big time back for the 2010 class. The kid from Florida seems like a great back up, but he's yet another back on the roster that lacks breakaway speed. At one point we had Stephens and Lipscomb both in the 2009 class and now we have neither. Losing Hayo would be a far bigger blow as I expect him to have a huge impact opposite Decker this year. We can't afford to lose two playmakers with speed out of this recruiting class. Losing Brock and Lipscomb for academics and Smith due to family issues has made for a rough offseason. The talent level is getting better, but if we want to improve on last years record we can't lose anyone else.

Brewster needs to start closing the deal on some

talented Barber/Maroney type RBs. His recruiting has been great, but very weak in this one area.

Now that Dunbar is gone, the task may become easier.

I am holding out hope for Eskridge and to a lesser extent Bennet. I'd be real happy if the 2006 version of Jay Thomas was able to re-appear. I really liked what I saw of JT, and the ACL injury really was unfortunate.

Told you a million times, the Gopher coach will never be the issue. The real fraud is youth football in MN.
It just isn't important enough culture and it never will be and that's what sets up all these problems where only scenario is recruiting athletes who can't cut the grade. Almost every other state, including Wis is ahead if Minnesota and that will never change.
Doesn't matter how angry you get at me as the past records tell the story

I really hated to hear this news, I was hoping he'd provide a bit of size to the backfield. Still, I have confidence that somebody from the Bennett, Whaley, Eskridge and Salamon group will step up. John Hoese also seems poised to contribute from the FB spot.

I think a healthy Jay Thomas or Whaley have the best potential to have the "home run threat" that our running back corp lacked last year. This was something I really looked forward to out of Stephens and Lipscomb when they initially pledged last summer and some of their film became available and is still a major need going forward that is largely unaddressed in recruiting.
I think Whaley may have the elusiveness, if not raw speed, but lacks the mass for yards after contact, so his potential lies in the ability of the line to open holes and allow him to operate in space and create oppurtunities.

I hope that Brewster doesn't feel the angst rising from our ranks regarding the imbalance of pledges on the offensive side of the ball and continues to pursue marquee running backs (which of course I am sure he will). Fingers crossed for the likes of Florida State hurdles champion Ethan Grant, a kid that has speed to burn.

Brewster needs to start closing the deal on some talented Barber/Maroney type RBs.

Is that all there is to it? Easy! I mean, first-day NFL draft picks just fall out of the sky, right?

Stick a fork in Jay Thomas' ability to produce anything from the line of scrimmage. If you expect nothing more from him than his special teams contributions, you won't be disappointed.

Brewster commented that Lipscomb won't be part of the Gopher program.....does that mean that it's unexpected he'll return here after junior college? I don't remember Brewster saying Marquise Gray wouldn't be a part of the program...in the future?

Marquise's situation was a little different in that he had been admitted to the U before the NCAA pulled the rug out from under him. He hadn't transferred anywhere and was guaranteed to be a Gopher assuming his test scores came through.

Lipscomb can reopen his recruitment as a JC prospect. That doesn't mean he won't come back here or we won't recruit him. It just means that we'll have to fight to earn his commitment again (probably).

I think Brew was referring to the fact that he won't/can't join the Gophers at any point this year, not that they were abandoning their pursuit of Lipscomb.

When an academic non-qualifier goes the JUCO route straight out of high school (a la OL Roszell Gayden as part of the recruiting class of 2008), he must graduate from the JUCO before he can go on to any D1 school.

That is why Gayden is not eligible to attend a D1 school this fall. But if Gayden graduates either this December, or next May, then he will be eligible to attend the D1 program of his choice in 2010, assuming the interest is mutual. And he will then have three years to use his two seasons of eligibility.

For Lipscomb, the situation is similar. He will NOT be eligible to attend a D1 program until 2011. And that is assuming he graduates from the Texas JUCO in two years.

Personally, I'm pulling for the kid...it couldn't have been easy being uprooted by Hurricane Katrina and all.
