"They worked harder and got more accomplished in the summer than we could've hoped," Limegrover said. "There's some natural football instincts and some skill obviously there. But for him to come out and not flub all over himself, which all freshmen tend to do early on, it tells us as coaches they did a heck of a lot of good work on their own during the summer.

I really, really hope Leidner stays healthy all year.

No. He is #4 right now. He won't play unless Leidner, Streveler, and Rhoda go down. He will be #2 next year.

The fact that Croft was in the scrimmage before Rhoda, does that mean anything?

He will be RS barring Leidner going down early. There's no reason to burn his RS if he's the QB of the future with Mitch still here. Now next year if he proves he's head and shoulders better, you start using him. You save him because he's the future and getting scrub snaps will do nothing to help his progression

I don't see Croft as number 2. I think he's either red shirting, or he's starting. That being said, I doubt he's starting unless Leidner misses extended time. Either way, Streveler is the number 2.

Use him now if he's ready. What if he becomes a star and leaves a year early? Use him now.

Definitely need to redshirt croft, let him get a year of training to fill out his body more. I also think if leidner doesn't improve his passing this year there should be a open competition for the qb spot next year. Leidners best attribute is that he can run the football, every time he drops back to pass you have to get nervous, inconsistent passers don't win championships. Croft is obviously the better runner out of the two, if he's ready next year I don't see any reason why his tenure as the starting qb shouldn't begin. Just not this year.

Don't read too much into Strevler repping at wide receiver. I suspect that the coaches are evaluating their options for a position switch in the spring. I think Croft redshirts, but the coaches will watch him develop during the season, if it looks like he's ready to be the backup we'll see Strevler at WR.

Streveler has speed and good size (6' 2", 223 lbs) to be sitting on the bench if not a No. 2 QB. They'd utilize him at WR or safety if Croft overtakes him next year.

I like the idea of of using him & Leidner in the same lineup - opportunity for trick plays.

He can't be a star if you redshirt him. And you get him for a minimum of 3 years (2 playing if he redshirts). So I wouldn't worry about that...

Um. Gamesmanship? I meant Perra, not Rhoda anyway. Once you get past Leidner and Streveler this year, the rest are a blur.

Watch last year's games. Leidner is a leader. His ability to WIN makes him the hands down starter. Barring injury, he starts the next 26 games. Or more.

Leidner is also the reason why we lost some games, I get that there wasn't a ton of talent on the outside but he's a division one qb and he struggles with making routine passes. There's no reason why his job should be secure next year if he doesn't improve this year which shouldn't be very hard since his passing is down right terrible.

Getting redshirted, especially at the qb position, does not mean you won't be a star. I recall that Andrew Luck was redshirted his freshman year and he turned out to be pretty decent.

I get that you're pushing your agenda, but would you care to substantiate any of this with actual evidence? Leidner has a winning record (easily) as a starter and is, statistically, an average Big Ten QB.

Why doesn't anyone start any threads asking about Logan McElfresh, backup punter extraordinaire?

What's your definition of average? Only statistical category he's average in is passing efficiency, and how many games have we won where we can say that he actually went out there and won that game? I still remember watching the Illinois game watching him go 12-30 passing.

He is also the better passer

And the ultimate resin for that loss was a fumble which turned into a IL touchdown...

What's your definition of average?

A number calculated by obtaining the sum of a set of numbers and dividing that sum by the quantity.

Only statistical category he's average in is passing efficiency

Right, only the most important stat (after wins, of course). He's also above average in several categories including wins, winning percentage, rushing yards by a QB, and rushing TDs by a QB.

how many games have we won where we can say that he actually went out there and won that game

The same as the amount of games he actually went out there and lost - zero. Players don't win or lose games - teams do.

I still remember watching the Illinois game watching him go 12-30 passing.

I still remember David Cobb turning the ball over on the last drive with a chance to win. What's your point?

You're making Leidner sound like he's some sort of god and is untouchable. I disagree with your statement about players don't win games, if you have a really good qb he can easily win a game for you. Ohio State has three of them that could go out there and win a game. I personally still think that defense wins games but everything is changing now. Leidner was also high in passing efficiency because he didn't attempt that many passes, wins and winning percentage have a lot more to do with the team then him and if you can't throw the ball I would hope that you could at least run it. I'm not knocking his running ability but his passing has to improve for us to win the big games.

lol what? the only part that makes sense is the last bolded part.

Good qbs can win games for a team. Ohio State has three qbs that can go out there and win a game. Defense in my personal opinion wins championships, but with how the game has changed I'm not positive thats true anymore.

And both Cardale Jones and JT Barrett redshirted, just like Croft will do this year.

Yes I said in my first post on this thread that Croft needs to redshirt to get a year of the weight room. My point is if Leidner doesn't improve this year, there should be a competition next year for the job.

How do you get "some sort of god" and "untouchable" out of "average"? He's not great, not terrible, and very, very easily the best QB currently on the roster.

You can't say that he gets little credit for the wins and most of the blame for the losses. It doesn't work that way.

Ohio State is probably the only college in the country with that situation. They have a unique, enviable situation as far as quarterbacks go. Holding us to that standard is not realistic.

Like dpo said, Mitch is an average Big Ten quarterback. Could be better, could be worse. You can win with an average quarterback - just look at Wisconsin (minus the Russel Wilson year when they had a very good quarterback).

Sometimes I think people get too used to watching NFL quarterbacks and expect college quarterbacks to be just as good.
