Lets face it...Indiana was in the pooper before this guy took over only a few seasons ago. IU's vast improvement is stunning to me. This is an example of what a good coach can do for a program... I still have 100 percent confidence that Tubby can turn us around again as well.. IU is now competing against everyone.

Yeah dude... he's really got them going well.. first time Purdue has won at Indiana in over a decade tonight.. wow, I'm impressed. Crean is a jagoff. 'Vast improvement'? C'mon.

Tubby Smith is 4 times the coach Crean is (and 90 times the man).

Lol hey...I agree Tubby is a better coach...I just also like what Crean has done for IU.

I know very little about Crean as a person but denying he's a very, very good coach seems foolish. He's doing a great job getting the most out of that team.

Crean annoys the crap out of me, but he seems like a good coach. They're definitely on their way up.

PS.. "stunned by the vast improvement" is just dumb:

Year before he got there - Indiana was 25-8.
His first year,... they were 6-25
This year, they are 9-12 and may not finish any better than 11-19.

Certainly there are reasons for the 6-25, but if that's vast improvement in your world, you must be the most positive young kid in the world.

Crean didn't get there 'a few years ago'. He ran off to It's Indiana, It's Indiana less than 2 years ago.... he's a showman who can fool some people. The fake tan, the 'intensity' on the sidelines.. you can give him 'credit' for that. But he hasn't done much of anything at II, II

I'm just talking about their play this season...It's improving tremendously...I should have probably stated that in my first post.

Oh.. I see.. improving tremendously you say.. OK. So.. before tonight, the first time they've lost to Purdue at home in over a decade... you had what? Oh yeah.. lost to Illinois.. what before that? Oh yeah, a home game AGAINST IOWA. They held those tough Hawkeyes to only 58 points. Too bad II, II only scored 43 and lost to a horrible Iowa team at home..

So yeah, they lost to Illinois and Purdue after getting hammered by Iowa at home.. so yeah, ... I can see the 'tremendous improvement'.

are you always this much of a pr*ck to people? This guy is being nice with his opinion and you bash him. Were you the big kid on the playground who only picked on kids smaller than you because you were afraid of kids your own size or bigger? Most likely.

This is not the same team that it was 5 years ago... when Purdue was terrible...I mean they beat us...Iowa has played some teams tough this year as well...The IU program has gone from a disaster situation to a team on the rise... I could even see them having an outside shot at the tourney next season.

If they don't have 'an outside shot at the tourney next season', the folks in Bloomington will be even more upset than some of them already are.

There has been no 'vast improvement'. The improvement has been slower than many expect. It's difficult to not improve from last year.. and Creek would have helped accelerate things. But, Crean still blows.

Come on Gopher Warrior. The entire point is that Indiana is getting better. Quit picking on everyone. You must have been the little fat kid at the bus stop who got constantly picked on, so now, from behind the safety of your stained keyboard you feel it is your right to assault some guy just posting a comment. Keep your cyber-bullying tactics for your "other" chat rooms, the ones where you pay by the minute and the most common phrase heard is "Put the lotion in the basket"....

Crean blows? Wow, you truly have no clue about college basketball. Obviously you paid zero attention to Crean's tenure at Marquette. While the record doesn't show it, he has IU basketball heading in the right direction. How about you and I have a conversation regarding Crean's program in 2 years? I'll bet my next two paychecks you'll be eating crow.

Fine - I'll take your $280.

IU is back in 2011.....they have a great recruiting class coming in........

IU has to do a better job of defending home court. I am not really sure what to think about them because almost everyone in the Big Ten is a tough out when you have an atmosphere like they had tonight.

Judging by his handle, I suspect "GopherWarrior" is also a Marquette fan (for the uninitiated Marquette athletics went by Warriors rather than the dopey Golden Eagles), so I can understand his resentment for Tom Crean. I also have to admit that while there are finally some signs of life in Bloomington, it isn't as if Crean is lighting the world on fire.

Yes, I know he has had to deal with sanctions, scandal, blah, blah, but it is far easier to build a solid team in 2 years (look at Kentucky) with great recruiting in basketball than football. IU is as blue-blooded a program as any and has every advantage available to UNC, UK etc (barring recent success of course).

It will interesting to see how Crean does in the next couple of years.

Yea, I think GW's animosity towards Crean is him being a Marquette fan. Crean is nothing special, just a decent recruiter, nothing more nothing less. He owes his entire career to taking a chance on some prop 48 kid named Wade.

And Travis Diener, Novak etc etc. Someone had to coach these guys. Do you think they just walked out onto the court without any preparation from the coaching staff?

As I pointed out hes a decent recruiter. Diener and Novak played solid minutes their freshman year, they could play before they got there. Crean didn't magically make them NBA 12th men. Aside from Wade's run to the final four, how many tourney wins did he have, if my memory serves me right....0. Last year was MU's first impressive play in the tourney since the final four run, Crean's first year NOT being the coach.

mesothelioma and Jimbob are both on point.

If anyone wants to understand how great of a coach the tan one is, I suggest a candid conversation with Wesley Matthews of the Utah Jazz.

Some very good things happened to the program while Crean was there,... but I am happy Crean is no longer at Marquette. Sorry that I'm not thoroughly impressed with the 'vast improvement' of his II, II squad to date.

Tubby Smith is 4 times the coach Crean is (and 90 times the man).

I hope you just get blasted for this ridiculous statement. Crean is as good a coach than Tubby Smith. Crean is one of the truly good people coaching this game. I have no idea where you get the notion that Tubby is 90 times the coach and person than Crean.
Give me a break...

It doesn't happen overnight

Crean annoys me as well, especially his incessant pacing, but for the most part only jilted Marquette fans (and it's understandable, no one likes it when their coach bolts for another school) would deny that there's serious progress being made at IU. Simply take a look at how the Hoosiers competed vs. Big 10 competition in 2008-09 and then look at how they're competing vs. Big 10 competition in 2009-10. ... and that's with Crean losing his leading scorer to a season-ending injury.

Making the jump from the bottom of a conference to the top of a conference (let alone the middle of the pack) doesn't happen overnight. We're finding that out here in Minnesota, and they're finding that out in Bloomington as well.

"4 times the coach of Crean" LOL!

Gopher Warrior = Irrational

I'm glad you edited your post to change it from 90 times to 4 times. Nonetheless, it's called hyperbole. "IU's vast improvement is stunning to me" is called delusional.

For those who are impressed by 6 double-digit losses, including 5 by 15 or more points... or losses at home to Loyola of MD... is there anything that Indiana could do that would not impress you?

I think that people overestimate what Crean did at Marquette. He was there for nine seasons:

1999-2000 NIT
2000-2001 No postseason
2001-2002 1st round loss in NCAA Tourney
2002-2003 Final Four
2003-2004 NIT
2004-2005 NIT
2005-2006 1st round loss in NCAA Tourney
2006-2007 1st round loss in NCAA Tourney
2007-2008 2nd round loss in NCAA Tourney

That makes five appearances in nine years on the job, with a total record of 5-5 in the tournament. Considering four of those wins came in one year when he had a truly transcendent player, I wouldn't exactly say that he was a miracle-worker at Marquette.

He's not a terrible coach, but he's not as good as his press would indicate. Add in the fact that he's an insufferable *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# and IU can keep him for all I care. Tan Cream, baby, what a coach.

you guys are flipping morons. I can't believe I'm even responding to your ridiculous opinions on Crean. I have a hard time believing IU would go out and hire Crean if he wasn't a highly qualified and successful coach. I'm not saying he's the best coach in the land, but give the guy some credit for what he has done. Where was Marquette before he got there? You guys are buffoons.

IU only goes for the most prestigious coaches...They saw Crean as being one...the team has improved tremendously through the course of Big Ten play...Stuck right with Purdue the whole game...They have been a pain in the ass to many teams including handing us a loss. The double digit losses will lessen....Let's also not forget that they are missing their star player.

How about I edit it again......

Gopher Warrior = The Skip Bayless of the Gopher Hole hahaha
