Coyle: "We are not going to take the gas pedal off our football program. We want to compete at a high level."

As opposed to the brake stand he's authorized for mens basketball for another year.
I really doubt this is what he wants for the basketball team. Basketball, football, and hockey are three critical sports where it looks good for recruits when they are around. All three also have potential to bring in the bucks.

I'm confident he'll get the basketball program to an elite level in the future.

Such a difference in leadership from the past, both with the AD and Pres., finally not apologizing for wanting to have an elite athlete department, not good or okay.

I don't really expect that Coyle could have done anything else this year given the way the season ended and the uncertainty. Maybe absent Covid he makes a move post season and maybe not, that would have been fair to critique. Now the best we can do is hope that Coach Pitino does well in the next year and redeems himself or at the very least doesn't set the program too far back on the way out the door.

I think a lot of fans of the basketball program feel like this is spinning our wheels and pray there is a basketball version of PJ out there if there aren't significant signs of progress this year.

He was going to fire Pitino after they lost to Iowa in the Big Ten tourny and didn't make any post-season tourny.

Cv19 f'ed us.

Frankly, I think volleyball has every bit as much drawing power as hockey. But that's my opinion, and may not be supported by the data or the dollars.

Having a below average basketball program that doesn’t really do too much embarrassing off the court isn’t the end of the world. I wouldn’t say we are f’ed

i personally think he was getting next year as a prove it regardless.

We can’t know for sure, but I recall reading something in the b-ball forum to the effect that he was preparing to interview candidates. Well anyway, it’s do or die for Pitino this coming season.

I wonder how MN fans feel about keeping Pitino if the team seems stuck in neutral after 7 years. I don’t really follow MN b-ball closely. I suppose with a large and potentially enormous hole in the athletics budget going forward if they’re going to throw piles of money to retain a coach I’d like it to be PJF. Pitino seems to always just give enough hope that next year will be the turnaround year...but again I don’t follow the ins and outs and injuries and recruiting.

We need to begin to see the opportunities that this provides. We can gain on everyone if the AD makes the ryt decisions.

Yes I would agree with you on that one. I should have added that. They are outdrawing Woman's hockey and have more enthusiasm currently than Men's hockey as to fan participation. Furthermore it seems to draw from all people regardless of age or sex.

Well I wanted him out after the season before that where I thought he underachieved with one of his high water mark teams.

I don’t really think much will change. We will make the tourney once every four years. Have a shot at the second round but not really be a threat for an elite 8 run.

I just thought he was going to get next year regardless.

As for cost saving.
Firing pitino wouldn’t save cost short run. They’d have to pay him out plus hire a new coach. Firing him would be more expensive.
I would not give Pitino a raise. I would pay all the money in the world to keep fleck as I think fleck is a short, medium, and long term money maker for the university.

Yeah. And honestly long term it doesn’t matter if we make a change now, after 2021 or after 2022.

I don’t think the team makes the dance next year...which would make it a dismissal almost no fans would disagree with.

Isn't a brake stand the precursor to rapid acceleration? So in that sense a brake stand might be awesome.

Not being the Cliche police here but..."take the gas pedal off"?

Unless you do it too long and the wheels pop before you release the brake. 7 years is a long brake stand.

3 vs 5 pretty much epitomizes the Pitino era at Minnesota. One of the least competent moments in college basketball history from my perspective.
