Per Chip:
Q: What is future of Williams Arena?
Coyle: Before the House settlement, we probably had four to five meetings with an outside consultant [about possible plans]. We recognize that we’re coming up on 100 years of Williams Arena. I tell people that I have no idea what the women’s restrooms look like, but the men’s restrooms need to be fixed. They’re old-school. Then when the House settlement hit, we put those conversations on pause and said we’re going to hold our breath for about 18 to 24 months just to get our feet underneath us and see how we manage these rev share payments. Then we’ll go back and look at Williams Arena [to see] what we can and cannot do.
We need to take a look at the facility. It’s amazing, when we’re playing Ole Miss in the second round of the [women’s] NCAA tournament, I don’t get one email about Williams Arena. People love it, the atmosphere, it’s the Barn, it’s awesome. But there are things we need to do to enhance it.
Q: Are you still trying to secure a naming rights deal?
Coyle: We are still working really hard on naming rights. Obviously, 3M stepped up and helped us with 3M Arena at Mariucci. We are looking at naming rights for Williams Arena, too. We’ve had great interest from people. We’ll continue to have those conversations.
Go Gophers!!
