Coyle on football: "We look forward to taking it one week at a time."

Maturi said if Texas Tech doesn't come back and win that game, Mason would have kept his job, at least for the next year.

Maturi didn't fire Mason. President Bruininks fired him. Furthermore, Mason needed to get his ass fired at least a year earlier than he did because by then it should have been obvious to every season ticket holder and fan that he had given up trying to turn the Gophers into a winning football program. Mason had all kinds of excuses for why he couldn't win in Minnesota and his recruiting in 2004, 2005, and 2006 was pathetic. They were easily his worst recruiting classes during his time in Minnesota.

Mason didn't make any excuses. He never had any stability. 3 AD's and 3 President's. Pay scale for the assistant coaches was in the bottom half of the B1G. A shared stadium with 3 tenants..

How can anyone support keeping this staff if we go 7-5?

How can you not? Claeys & staff are burdened with 5 years of absolutely disgraceful recruiting on the offensive side of the ball. In a single year we've seen improvement in the running game and huge improvement in the offensive line. Especially the fact that changes in training and practice has kept the O Line much more healthy.

7-5 would be a major improvement, certainly aided by the schedule. 8-4 would be newsworthy and anything better than this would beyond dreams.

I think it could come down to how much we are willing to pay a new head coach. If we are willing to pay $3 million plus guarantee a large pool of money for assistants then we might just take a chance. Otherwise giving Claeys a token extension and waiting until next year might not be a bad plan. He has at least proven he can keep the program afloat.

And he championed us a new stadium. I agreed with letting him go at the time (NDSU was unforgivable), but in retrospect, I'd have liked to see a season or two in TCF and whether he'd have done better there.

You thought mason beating NDSU in a close game was unforgivable?

One week at a time...that's Claeys' job status. 2 subpar weeks and he gone. Look, Coyle is no dummy, he knows where the enthusiasm of the program is now and he also knows Kill built a lot of good momentum (including the facility's and a very good recruiting class last year). Coyles' expectations are high, he as said so himself. He also knows this is year 6 of Kill/Claeys (whether u like it or not they're lumped together). This year should be the pinnacle. Claeys is going to need 8 wins and extremely competitive losses in the other games or better to even get consideration for sticking around.

Because you said so? Since you brought up Coyle, my guess is it's should be what he thinks, not what anyone here thinks.

I wouldn't say he started from scratch but this certainly isn't a 100% continuation of Kill either. Claeys has made some changes.
