Tubby did the damn hockey subs in the first half and it did not work at all. He had a quick hook with EE, Ingram, and Mav when they were messing up and I thought that was big. There is a large drop off after the top 5 guys, and having at least 3 of them on the floor at a time was really a good move and IMO, helped lead to the win.

Hats off to Tubby for the adjustments and the coaching job

Also- GREAT timeout during the Ill run in the 2nd half, that was good coaching.

I think Tubby's strategy is to use the bench as much as possible in the first half without letting the game get out of hand. Then in the 2nd half with fresh starters he can tighten the rotation and not worry about fatigue. This is one of the reasons why we beat MSU, Izzo said their starters were just too tired at the end of the game.

It was a physical game and Tubby was trying to rest the troops for a stretch in the first half, but plainly the second squad played below expectations tonight. Notice also that in the second half, when Mav struggled with his ball handling, and Dre needed to sit with foul trouble, Tubby also didn't hesitate to go to Welch, who played much steadier when needed.

Exactly. I've been saying this for years. If you don't want the hockey sub at some point in the first 10 minutes, you should find another team to watch. He's not going to change and it's for the very reason Madtown suggests. Also, the starters don't always play well right away and sometimes the 2nd team has picked them up. Furthermore, it strengthens the "team" concept. Everyone knows they will play and when they will play in the first 10 minutes. Guys don't have to wonder - they will all get a chance. I like it.

It wasn't a pretty stretch for the second line but they actually gained a point on Illinois and kept it close thanks to Mbakwe. Worked out well.

Don't forget the starters weren't exactly lighting it up early. We struggled and got off to a really slow start (for the 2nd straight game). In those cases, the hockey subs can help, because it changes the pace of the game and get the starters to get their heads back in the game. But normally, I'm not a fan of it either.

All 5 starters played at least 31 minutes, despite the hockey sub. Don't over-analyze.

That was an ugly game for EE. His line in the boxscore was: 2 min, 0 pts, 3 TO's and 1 foul. Ouch.

Too many people think if the bench players don't score(or score very little) that they didn't give quality minutes. Message boards = negative emotional reactions

It's really odd to see all of the love for the Gophers. ESPN and BTN are making us out to be the best thing since sliced bread. I love it.

its about time. if you go into a top 10-15's house and blast them by 17, you better get recognized

The way I see it (and I'm the opposite of an expert) the bench doesn't need to score in order for us to win. Tonight is an example of that. We need people like Welch, Osenieks, and Ingram to come off the bench and give us quality minutes, especially on D. We need them to grab rebounds and stop the other team from getting buckets. Let the starters get the points. Any points we get from the bench is only an extra benefit.

The Gophers are high energy and big time dunkers. Highlight reel makers love that kind of action, therefore ESPN loves the Gophers. It's about time BTN took notice. They've been too busy kissing Indiana's behind all year to care about anyone else, except some time for Michigan.

The one good thing I'll say about BTN is that Mr. Johnson tonight displayed very little homerism for being a former Illinois player. Kudos to him.

Mbakwe: 35
Andre: 31 (foul trouble)
Austin: 34
Coleman: 36
Williams: 33

Yet some on this board are concerned about 'line changes'.

100%. When the subs play, people wonder why the starters don't play more. When the starters play more, they worry the subs aren't playing more. Just enjoy another huge win people.

Ummm, that is exactly what was happening earlier in the year against lesser opponents. People were concerned that this would not work during the big ten season. Guess what happened near the beginning of the game? Full line change. We looked lost on offense, turned the ball over repeatedly, and lost assignments on defense. Tubby noticed this, as did everyone else. We didn't see it happen again.

I can live with the line change if they can avoid being completely inept on offense. Tonight they had 3 possessions and 3 TO's before Trevor joined the 4 subs. Mav really struggled. Eliason was awful. There's no go to scorer on this group. They miss Chip Armelin. Oto's probably the best scoring threat. I'd like to see Julian play PG with this group and Wally inserted into the line.

I hate the line changes as much as anyone but that was clearly not the intent tonight. There wasn't a single whistle between the under 16 and under 12. During that stretch guys were going to the table 1 or 2 at a time. By the time there was finally a stop at 11:29, I suppose Tubby felt everyone probably needed a minute and since we've done the line change so many times anyway, probably figured may as well.
