Could gophers miss tourney?

Fine - let's disregard the terrible luck in the two previous seasons and just go by record and say "let's fire him" - well you better have an excellent option waiting in the wings. Dumping your coach and paying off his salary, while likely sacrficing at least one recruiting class, doesn't seem like a program helper unless you have a damn good replacement.

Somebody like Shaka Smart would be fine with me. Young, Enthusiastic, Runs a Solid System That Players Buy Into. Everything Tubby is not.

Luck not withstanding whats the excuse for this year? If they don't find a way out of this tailspin (and nothing he has done here has shown me that he can) and finish 8-10 and miss the tourney you want to keep him? To me i think any coach at any big ten school in year 4, 5, and 6 with a roster full of his players that misses the tourney 3 consecutive years needs to be seriously considered for a change to be made. (Nw, PSU not withstanding) Whats your solution let this guy stay here for 7 years with 2 NCAA appearences with 0 wins because this team will be taking a step back next year.

Even though, most people laud Trevor tonight, his 3 one and one misses on the front end and other missed free throws could have sealed the game.... Otherwise we looked scared to shoot = Dre has got to be let go - look to score and forget those forced passes.

How many programs have replacement in hand when they fire a coach?

I still think the gophs will make the tourney, the players we have are just too talented. But I can't help but think of the 16-4 start we had 2 years ago and then we just collapsed, missing the NIT. We will see how they rebound.

And what makes you think that Shaka Smart wants to be the head coach at the U? I could say "let's fire Jerry Kill! and hire that Nick Saban guy while we're at it", doesn't mean it's going to happen or even that it's likely. Now, if you're SURE that a Shaka Smart or maybe a Flip Saunders or Brad Stevens would take the job, that make the thought a bit entertaining. Otherwise, all you're doing is risking that you end up with a worse coach and fall deep into the B1G basement. I'd prefer at least having a chance each week, even if I admittedly expect much more.

If Trevor and Dre were both injured tonight and out for the season, then we'd have a similar situation to the sudden clusterF that occurred 2 years ago. This is NOTHING like that.

My solution? Well I'm not the coach, but if I was, I'd begin by shaving off that ugly mustache. I'd have the team do a hell of a lot of sprinting early in the morning for next practice. And I'd play my guys who bring the best combination of talent and EFFORT to the team, and see what happens. I'd also teach my team the simple concepts of breaking down a zone defense - for starts, you don't dribble into the teeth of the zone, which seems to be the only thing we do when we're not forcing the ball on misguided passes. And finally, I'd teach my team WHICH shooters to stick with in 3-point land, and WHO you need to worry about taking the ball to the hoop or getting the ball inside. If it's not Cody Zeller or other high-end players, stick with the exterior guy to prevent the open 3. If shooting 45% for 2's is normal, then you only need to hit 30% as an equivalent % from 3 to score the same amount of points. Let them work for a tough 2 once in a while, but stop giving them the damn open 3's. Six straight years of watching the opposing team's shooters get wide open looks from 3 territory has my blood boiling hot as a Gopher fan.

Agree with that, they look at this old coach lose with a better team time after time. I am sure that is enticing for them.

Well, me personally, I'm going to wait until that loser of a coach Tubby leads this bunch of losers to all of those losses before I start agreeing that he should get fired. And if we lose ONE key player to injury, well, then I just don't know. We can't continue to keep firing every coach that comes along who can't perform miracles. GRANTED, Tubby may not be the best coach? Six years should be plenty to have done something more than he has, MAYBE? I'm not a Div 1A college basketball coach, so I am not qualified to say. I'd be REALLY interested to know what Natl Columnists think about it, vs BIASED gopher fans.

And good question, if we fire Tubby, who HONESTLY would want to come here to coach the bb team?! Don't give me a list of coaches who are better than Tubby, give me a list of coaches who have a better resume than Tubby, who WOULD take this job if we fire Tubby after this season?!

0 NCAA wins in 5 years is Miracles?(and don't see one this year) Finishing no better than 9-9 in 5 years is miracles. Then having a team with 3 starting upperclassmen and "supposedly" better at every position than Northwestern and lose a game like this and we cant get upset. I guess have any expectations on a coach is too much to ask. Tubbys resume the last 8 years is pretty average at best. I haven't been scouring the up and coming coaches but I sure will be. We have and AD in place that has proven in the past that he knows how to hire basketball coaches. (Still not sold on him as a fb guy, 800,000 reasons why)

Here are some names that would interest me. The obvious one, Shaka Smart ties to our AD and his success speaks for itself although I think he is waiting for a top 10 job to open up. Gregg Marshall of Wichita State, 50 years old, built Winthrop up and is now having sustained success at Wichita State. Donnie Tyndall 43 years. Took over a a 4-23 Moorehead st and built them up into a Ohio Valley Conference power, is now at Southern Miss (1st year) has them 16-4 and 5-0. Ben Jacobson Northern Iowa, believe that he signed a long term contract but college coaches can get out of anything.

Yes because they all would want to come here with terrible facilities man I'm sure they're just lining up!

So you think that we would go 0-4 for those 4 coaches. Each one would see a 500000 raise and would be coming from minor conferences. Come on yeah no practice facility sucks but its a major step up for 3 of them.

To answer the question presented, sure they could.

The Gophers absolutely shouldn't miss the NCAA with the talent they have, but after last night I'm starting to think anything's possible in the Big Ten. With 12 games left what road game can we look at and definitively say, yea, we'll win that one? And there's really only two home games remaining that I'd call gimme's (using that term loosely), Nebraska and Penn State. For the first time I'm having doubts the Gophers will get to the 11-7 conference mark I projected prior to the season.

Beat Wisconsin & get your 2nd straight road split. It's the best we can do after last night. Find a way to get it done.

They will make the tourney. They need to sit down and watch their early season games. If they play like they did in the LOSS to Duke, they win last night. Something has happened to the intensity level. I honestly am wondering if this team can't handle being ranked that high...kind of playing "scared to lose".

IF this team does NOT make the tourney...Tubby has to go. There is far too much talent on this team NOT to make a tournament. How many teams in the B1G have potentially 4 players making money at the next level starting for them? The talent is there.
