Local kid walks on to a D1 FBS program, earns a scholarship, climbs the depth chart to second string, and gets a start when the incumbent starter gets hurt. That's a pretty cool progression.

Good luck to Conor on Saturday! I hope the line holds up, the receivers develop sticky fingers, and the RBs gallop all over the field - specifically in a forward direction. Most of all I hope you win your first start.

My question is, is he starter y default [redshirt Croft] or is he ahead at this point???

Is it too early to give him a theme song? Was thinking My Sharona aka Conor Rhoda

I'm really, really hoping this is sarcasm because this thought needs to go away ASAP. There is a 0% chance that Coach Claeys would sit Croft in order to preserve his redshirt if he was truly the best option to beat Maryland. He/We are desperate to win games right now.

20% actually.

0%? Is that a fact? With ML7 likely out just 1 game I actually think it is more likely than not. I know you disagree and find that absurd - no need to reply to tell me that again.

OK, just to be clear...you honestly think that Claeys would willingly decrease his odds of winning the Maryland game in order to preserve a season of eligibility for Demry Croft in 2019? If that is the case, why does he play true freshmen on special teams (but nowhere else, ie Thomas Barber) with regularity but prizes a redshirt at the QB position above all else?

Or is it that Rhoda/Croft are so close in ability at this moment that we Claeys figures we may as well go with the veteran hand? Not trying to be disagreeable, just want to make sure I understand your rational here.

Goblirsch insinuated Green is the heir apparent, not Croft. And, this is only because Mark Wiliams wants to play WR. Supposedly the coaches want him at QB and there is some horse trading going on and he's practicing at both currently. Also insinuated Croft is having some off-field issues (academic?) that may have him in the doghouse. Wait, there's more! JUCO recruit possibility at QB.Otherwise looks like it may be Green next year.

Again, this is something I read on a free message board so there's that.

I was hoping some sort of Jeff Jones is innocent / on his way back theory would pop up in there somewhere.

That conflicts with Ryan Burns reporting that Seth Green is a minimum of 18 months away from being ready to compete for the starting job. Really hope we keep all options open for improving the position this offseason (be it JUCO or grad transfer).

It's not like Ryan and the coaching staff can't disagree. Or that he can be a ways away, but still what they think is their next best long term prospect.

Claeys mentioned Green on Tuesday as the emergency QB this week, but made extra comments about potential and how smart he is. I tend to think Rhoda and Green are 1-2 next year.

Seems pretty rare that hear about a guy not wanting to play QB, typically it is the other way around, kid has to play something else because they can't make it at QB.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Croft was being passed on the depth chart as I think he was a pretty massive project/reach to begin with. Doesn't tell the whole story on a kid but seemed very odd that we were his only offer above the MAC level. Doesn't mean he won't pan out at some point but it also wouldn't shock me if he is never the full time starter at any point in his Gopher career.

I went around and around with Spoofin on this very subject in a recent thread...needs to seriously give it up on this one.

I thought that odd as well, but who knows? Gobie as probably as plugged in as anyone. Maybe Williams feels like his best chance in the NFL is at WR.

My takeaway is that we are in for a rebuilding year on offense in 2017 unless one of the guys develops more rapidly than anticipated. Maybe also why we are combing the JUCOs and prep schools for QBs.

Not just that but a guy doesn't want to play QB... and the coaches want him to. Weird, but not impossible.

Rebuilding? We lose our QB, RT and one WR. I think we are equal to better next year on offense.

Maybe but it will hinge on the QB position. We have no real clue what is behind Mitch on the depth chart right now in terms of viable options or how well Green will do long term. I would say the potential for the offense to be better next year exists if the QB position is locked down. If it is in flux, who knows.

On top of that we have to get better play from the offensive line then what we are getting right now.
