eESPN has a rather bi-polar evaluation of Minnesota target Dujuan Piper. On one hand they have him listed as four stars, but only give him an 80. I didn't know that 80's would be considered four stars. If you go to the bottom line on his recruiting analysis, it says that if he works hard and puts in the effort he might have a chance to be a division 1 player. Not a great player, not a good player, but just a division 1 player. Not exactly a glowing endorsement.

Piper is a late bloomer. They updated his grade, but not his evaluation yet for some reason. Also, they altered their grading system fairly recently so 80 is now a lot better than it used to be.

Isn't 80 like potential to be an impact player at the high-major D1 level. 2-3 year contributor? I remember it being something like that. Now, I personally believe he can make an impact next year for us at SF!

I dont know if I would call him a late bloomer. He plays on an extremely talanted team that runs a blackhole offense. Two passes is a lot for them. The teams offense runs through Louisville signee, Aaron and the top junior in the state of Washington, Murray. He gets limited opportunities to show what he can do.

Not saying you're wrong, but if he isn't a late bloomer, then why did he get a big rating boost late in his high school career?

He may be somewhat of a late bloomer, but the strong junior class on Rainier Beach has increased the recruiting exposure to the team. Piper has Rodney Williams like jumping ability, so he creates memorable moments. The fact is, he doesnt have great numbers. If this makes sense, he out-performs his stats

It says the latest update was 2/10/14. Piper looks to have decent length and stuff, but it seems like we are already making excuses as to why he doesn't produce or seem to have any decent rankings outside of ESPN. "Late-bloomer" or "plays on a black-hole offense" or is the third option. I'm praying for a game-changing recruit and I just don't see that in Piper.

You've never watched him before... You have no idea if he has the potential to be a game changing player for the Gophers or not.

Well Trent Lockett was about the 3rd or 4th option on that Hopkins team in 09, he turned out pretty good for ASU/Marquette

I'm not implying that at all. I posted in another thread that I think he has the best chance to start out of this class, assuming he signs. Spring recruiting is different than fall recruiting. Most of the spring recruits needed more evaluation. They fall into a handful of categories:
1. Players that choose to wait (Vaughn)
2. Players that put up ridiculous numbers against weak competition (Kevin Noreen)
3. New to the scene. Either transferred from an under the radar school to a high profile school, or moved into the country.
4. Play in a high profile program where they are not the number 1 option
5. Pure desperation to fill a position of need

That isn't an updated analysis even though it says it was updated a few days ago. ESPN doesn't do a good job with their its site.

They change that date anytime they change anything on the profile. I'm telling you, I read that evaluation before they changed his ranking and it is still the same. Also, it's annoying how you look for any reason to panic about a recruit, but I suppose I should be used to it by now.

Correct.

Probably the greatest "late bloomer" of all time would be Julius Erving. I'm going to stick with trusting Coach Pitino and his staff to recruit the best players they can for this program. If the coaching staff wants Dujuan Piper to be a Gopher then I want Dujuan Piper to be a Gopher. Who knows...perhaps we'll have the second coming of Dr. J on our hands!

The rating and the analysis are clearly conflicting. Take a breath. His final three are Gonzaga, Washington, and the Gophers. If he were a borderline D1 player, he probably wouldn't have the offer list that he does. If you want to trust an ESPN analysis over multiple D1 coaches, that's your thing. We all know how you cherry pick any and every negative possible.

Not sure how real the Washington thing is... Piper certainly has the look of a guy who could become a nice fit with Minnesota... from last month:

2014 Djuan Piper
6’6″ Wing

LNH Notes: First, it’s important to recognize the relationships in this recruitment. Louisville’s Rick Pitino will bring in another Seattle player this summer and has drawn on the talent at Piper’s high school before.

This summer, Rick Pitino will do so again when Piper’s Rainier Beach teammate Shaqquan Aaron joins the Cardinals.

Djuan has the look of a player that would fit very well with what Gopher coach Richard Pitino is trying to do. Piper is a long, active defender with quickness to score at the rim in transition. With Austin Hollins graduating this spring, Minnesota could use help defensively and Piper is a guy who can guard multiple positions.

The Gophers certainly could use a big man in their 2014 (more so than a wing) and at first glance Piper may look similar to incoming JUCO wing Carlos Morris. However, whereas Morris can be expected to provide some offensive punch for Minnesota once he steps on campus, Piper is a guy who the staff could help develop over time.

There’s enough talent there, his skill set fits in well with Minnesota’s game plan and with Austin Hollins in his final season, Piper would provide another strong defender and potentially a jack-of-all-trades type (with ability for an occasional highlight dunk like Austin).

Other Notes:
+ Plays high school ball for powerhouse Rainier Beach (Seattle, WA)
+ Rainier teammates Shaqquan Aaron & Elijah Foster played alongside Gopher-commit Josh Martin this summer for Seattle Rotary (Piper has run with Rotary in the past as well, but not in the EYBL)
+ Aaron is committed to play for Louisville & Richard Pitino’s father.
+ LNH has seen Piper in person.

I attended a high school basketball game once in Vancouver, WA (Columbia River) expecting to see powerhouse Rainier Beach of Seattle. Couldn't understand why they were so ordinary until I realized it was Rainier, as small town in northwest Oregon.

Can we revoke BigGopherFan's name? It's too ironic. I'm thinking we give him the name MaybeAGopherFan or GopherPessimist or GophersSuck.

I think he should throw a few bucks to GoofyGopher and take that name!

Love it!!

And to the dude who says I think the Gophers suck, you're wrong. I'm objective. People hate that word around here. Why would anyone ever question a Gopher recruit?? Gasp!! Why would anyone point out areas of need for the program??

I'm glad someone on here finally understands my name IS ironic. Because, no, I'm not a big fan of the Gophers. Not even close. I follow the program and wish them well; they just rarely meet my expectations. Nebraska is on the rise and Northwestern seems to have a very good coach so teams "below" Minnesota are only getting better. This program needs game-changing recruits if it hopes to stay semi-relivent.

...oh and let's not forget Illinois has a few big time transfers in the barrel coming next season and several young and talented players who are only getting better.

I'd say you're a fatalist not objective. You're correct on some points, but you're on the opposite end of the spectrum of the Gophers homers on here.

Wait...did you just admit you aren't even a Gopher fan? And there is a difference between being objective and being pessimistic. You are the ultimate pessimist.

Why do you post here if you are not a big gopher fan? And NOT EVEN CLOSE to being one?

Objective is one thing, but you have never once said anything positive about the team, program or coach Pitino. So until you do (there is plenty to be excited about), you are nothing but a troll and I don't think anyone would be surprised if you were actually a Wisconsin or Iowa fan.

ETA: You also never show up after a big win, but if we lose you are in here the second the game is over ripping the team and act as if the sky is falling.

I'm not a BIG gopher fan. I don't want to be. I've seen how actual big Gopher fans act on here, attacking those who disagree with them and always painting an unrealistic spin on everything relating to the program. I'm attacked on here and think its sad that people take this team so seriously and don't see it for what it is. I'm not going anywhere. So ignore me if you hate me so much, even none, and I mean NONE, of you actually know me.
