Just out of curiousity, who are the confirmed (by a legitimate source) OC Candidates. And what is the order in which they were considered or offered:

Josh Huepel: Quarterbacks coach for Oklahoma (apparently said "no")
http://newsok.com/ou-quarterbacks-coach-josh-heupel-not-going-to-minnesota/article/3337541

Tim Salem: Tight Ends/Special Teams Coach at the Univ of Central Florida
http://www.startribune.com/sports/37481019.html

Jim Chaney: Former St. Louis Rams Offensive Assistant and current U of Tenn OC
(Brewster denied making an offer - Chaney accepted Tennessee job)

Major Applewhite: Texas RB Coach (if an offer was made, the answer seems to have been "no")

Jeff Horton: St. Louis Rams Offensive Assistant
http://blogs.twincities.com/gophers/2009/01/brewster_doesnt_feel_like_hiri.html

Some names I have heard, but can find no legitimate source material for:

Mike Hohensee: former Arena Football League Head Coach (and former Gopher QB)

We'll see how this turns out, but by no means would I consider any of these names "absolute knockouts."

Other confirmed names?

In looking at this list, I cannot help but think there is a better candidate available or not mentioned at this moment.

I am curious what promises if any were made to coach davis as far as having input on the offensive identify and gameplan. I am curious if this did occur if this could be having a negative impact on getting a good OC to take the job as he doesn't want to have to share his gameplan and get approval from Davis.

Looking at that list it seems being Brewster's OC does not seem to be a super attractive position to many. I am hoping he can pull a rabbit of out his hat and get a quality OC with experience but this is not looking good. Whoever it is needs to hit the ground running because next year is critical.

Horton

Horton imploded as UNLV's HC. Of course a lot of guys have done that and it does not mean that he cannot be a good OC.

Here's the update the way I see it. This is in order of discussion/interview/article. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Jim Chaney: Former St. Louis Rams Offensive Assistant - Brewster denied making an offer (this was prior to Dunbar's departure) and Chaney accepted Tennessee OC job.

Major Applewhite: Texas RB Coach. Not clear if an offer was made. If so, the apparent answer was "no."

Josh Huepel: Quarterbacks coach for Oklahoma. Has announced he's staying at Oklahoma.

Gunter Brewer: Oklahoma State co-offensive coordinator says he has withdrawn from consideration.

Todd Fitch: East Carolina offensive coordinator has stated that he will be at East Carolina "for a long time."

Tim Salem: Tight Ends/Special Teams Coach at the Univ of Central Florida. There have not been any updates reported on this since last Thursday.

Jeff Horton: St. Louis Rams Offensive Assistant interviewed late last week and there has been no official update since then.

So, it seems there have been at least 7 potential OC's approached about the job. Of these, the two that are still in the running are Tim Salem and Jeff Horton. Of course, there could be another name (or names) that has not been reported and would be a surprise to us.

I sure hope so, because the remaining candidates do not live up to the hyperbole that Brewster was using about 10 days ago (in my opinion).

Watching some of the Steeler game, I have to admit I missed some of our two tight end play action sets. I wonder how diversified we can be with our formations while limiting the number of hours a player can practice a week.

Chaney was the original guy but choose Tennessee. Since Dunbar was still officially our OC, Brewster had to deny it but I think everybody saw through that one, especially with the Rams coaches comments.

Brewster then called Mack Brown, as he often does, to get some names and thats where Applewhite came up. Brown was all for it since he knew he could always get Major back at Texas whenever he wanted to and figured this would be a great learning experience, but Applewhite had no interest in moving up north and the discussions really never got past that initial interest. Technically he was never offered the job as discussions never got past the "I don't want to move to Minnesota" phase.

Then it was all Josh Heupel and my source is still 100% that Josh accepted the job and then the next day backed out. The two popular reasons we're family didn't want to move and Stoops really did all he could to keep Josh at OU which includes a nice raise and new title and some other perks.

After that, it's been a free for all and we all know the names of Brewer, Fitch, Horton, and there have been a couple other NFL assistants contacted but so far it's been a mess.

With a firend at the T-Wolves game last week and we ran into Darrell Thompson and he thought that coach McDonald would be named co-coordinator with who ever they hire and that may be the reason we are losing alot of candidates.

After the Huepel incident, they have been super secretive on this hire which is why nobody has been able to get the scoop on guys unitl it's old news.

Apparently, you can add another name of guys who turned Brewster down.

Rivals writer Tom Dienhart - who is a Brewster buddy - reported today that John Garrett (Cowboys TE coach) turned down Brewster's offer to be OC. John Garrett is Jason Garrett's brother.

Thanks for the insights. But you'd think a Big Ten school could get a top OC, rather than someone with only marginal experience. All this co-ccordinator stuff troubles me, to tell the truth.

Excellent recap, thanks Johnny.

Was Darrell Thompson purely speculating on McDonald?

I believe the way he said it was along the lines of, "thats what i heard" I don't know how connected Darrell is to the current staff beyond being announcer.
