From a Doogie retweet: "Maturi said he regretted making the "Tubby-type" hire proclamation. Says he knew all along they wouldn't get a big name."

EPIC FAIL Joel. EPIC FAIL. Not a slam on Kill. I'm liking the guy. But its rare that you get to see someone at his level manage to be as capable at inserting his foot into his mouth as Joel Maturi is. Sigh...

He had also gone a step farther in talking about the money he could throw around, wow.

I think it's been stated many times that Joel might be well suited as an Assistant AD working behind the scenes, or maybe an AD at a smaller school, but no way he should be the face of a Big 10 program.

No doubt one of the dumbest comments made in a long time. Epically terrible.

I think he made a very good hire for "Minnesota", but from a outsiders view and apparently from your guys view, he isn't doing himself any favors for his future with his mouth. Again, I think the Kill hire was the correct hire in a football sense. That is why I thought logical hires were like Kill, Esdall, Golden, etc.... football coaches, not just flashy big names.

If he said that and thats not out contexts..... wow.

even if Kill works out i dont see why we couldn't see Maturi out. I hate being a Minnesota hater that wants everyone fired, but this guy is a dope.

I agree there, Kill isn't the real problem (again I like the hire for you guys), it is Maturi's mouth. To say something and not really mean it, isn't working for your alums.

Maturi is truly inept at the big aspects of his job. All we can really do is pray that the blind squirrel found a nut here. We already got lucky when one fell and hit him in the head (Tubby) so maybe we have gotten lucky again.

Anyone see his interview with Marney Gellner? He didn't even know her name. Joel: "hello young lady". I liked the fact that she pointed out that Joel was doing a interview with her 4 years ago for the same reason.

That's a bit embarassing. Marney has been a reporter for FS North for years. I would think the AD at the state's major University would at least be aware enough of the local sports scene to know who she is. Don't know who Robbie Inkmakowski is? OK. But have a clue about those that are mainstays...

I would like to hear that quote documented and posted. I will stand corrected and apologize to Doogie if proven but for now I call BS on that. I do not believe Maturi said "he knew all the time they wouldn't get a big name".

We will have the audio at 6:49 p.m. on Ch. 5 during our 6:30 p.m. newscast Sports hit... he definitely said it. It was a Joe Schmit question. Jon from the AP was in the scrum. Just listened back.
"From day one, I knew we wouldn't get a Tubby Smith hire because I knew from day one that there wasn't a BCS coach who wanted this job, probably -- that's just fact."

Jesus Tapdancing Christ

The question is: would a different AD have landed Tedford, Mike Stoops, etc.? My thought = YES.

Funny that people still think Maturil had any part in hiring Tubby Smith. Talk about social conduct issues, Joel. Kaler clean house!

Joel: First rule of holes is, when you're in one stop digging.

Sheesh, this guy is a nightmare.

I am very happy to announce that none of us has ever said in public anything that we would ever look back on and regret it.

Talk is cheap, it takes money to buy as much beer as I buy AND drink. :)

Exactly Doogie. This guy is a clown. Shouldn't he have a list of 5 viable candidates written down and kept in his wallet at all times? Isn't that the #1 job of an AD?

Doogster is right on-would you want to work for this clown? And attend that tool's weekly staff meetings?! Joel must have read somewhere in a mgmt text that it is good to have meetings with your staff. A class act, buttoned up pro could have gotten anyone of the above mentioned guys-remember, it is a people business

Certainly not with your dumb ass as a boss Mr. Maturi.

Kill is our coach and he may be the right guy at the right time, but I'd believe "no BCS coach would want our job" a lot more if Joel wasn't involved.

In all fairness what he might have been referring to is that:

No coach wants to walk into a situation like ours where the President is on the way out and the AD contract is reportedly up in 2012 without guarantees that said president and AD can't/won't give that said coach would have input on the hires.

That would be a fair reality, but also should never be spoken. The man learned nothing from his fiasco hire four years ago.

On the working for? Maybe. He's not a Big Ten AD, so making a tiny leap that working for real Big Ten ADs is probably tougher.

An Interview goes both ways. How many Candidates turned us down because they wanted nothing to do with this dysfunctional circus. (Maturi, Mona, Two Presidents, Save Gopher football.com, Adam Kelley) who else?

Maturi is a complete disaster, but i'm not so sure that another AD in Maturi's situation would have landed much better of a coach. A lot of coaches who are in decent situations already would be extremely reluctant to coach in a place where the President and the AD are almost out the door. I will say this though, if anyone could have gotten a bigger name hire under these circumstances, that certainly WASN'T Maturi.

As far as Maturi on the aspect of PR. He botched this entire hiring up. I am a big fan of Jerry Kill, but Maturi cut his legs from under him. If MAturi would have just said that "we are looking for a proven winner with head coaching experience who will come to MN and put together a staff and system that is fundamentally sound and hard working", he wouldn't have had 1/2 the backlash that he created for himself. All this JR High nonsense about a "Tubby-like" hire and "I can't believe HE'S interested" was buffoonish.
