Computer/Math based rankings are part of what doomed the BCS rankings.

I'll take a computer's opinion about football when I see a computer out there making a tackle.

Football is tough for computer rankings because of how few games are played. IMO the Pairwise rankings work very well for college hockey though.

It’s hard to tell what the ranking is supposed to do too.

Some folks seem to intend to have their ranking predict a season outcome over time.

Others just want to beat the spread regularly over a large number of games each week. So if it is way off a game/ team here or there it doesn’t matter.

Others seem to want to exist in some statistical Narnia land where it is disconnected from anything back here on earth.

Just hard to know.

Rankings based on objective facts (stats, strength of schedule, etc.) are at least worth considering, in my opinion.

IMO having computers decide the playoff teams would be way better than having a bunch of AD's with major conflicts of interest doing it.

AD's are the majority, but they aren't from major football programs mainly, there are plenty of G5 ones, and it would be way too easy and obvious to spot if they were rigging it.

Not necessarily rigging, but far more subject to bias, human error, groupthink, etc.
Computers are far from flawless, but they are more objective than humans.

So SP+ ranks every play for exactly this reason. Which is why the Gophers can be 16 in the country while playing in the pinstripe bowl

You're correct. That will always hold true.

I think the good overshadows the bad, in having human subjectivity in control.

I think those rankings are telling us that the Gophers shouldnt have lost to Iowa and Purdue
True.
But at the same time:
Computer rankings don’t account for the best player being ruled out about 30 minutes before game time against Purdue.
They also don’t account for the best Player fumbling against Iowa or a long interception return.

The computer ratings are flawed in that they under appreciate things such as points and turnovers and wins and over appreciate things such as yards and yards allowed. This is why 3-9 2021 Nebraska was a top 30 computer team.

Yep, the team was better than the record, which wasn’t bad. Bad bounces, bad plays, errors, overthinking, luck.
Could say the same for some of the wins. End of the Bucky game...they basically had a collective meltdown. Still a W for Gophs just like the others.

Computers "love" the Gophers because the Gophers control the course of a game - and that shows up in statistics.

The Gophers win by controlling the course of the game. That's the upside. The downside is that the Gophers cannot win without controlling the course of the game.

By contrast, the Vikings cannot control the course of a game. But they can usually win, no matter the course.

That's a pretty accurate summary. I agree, in general.

One caveat, though: the Gophers did not control the course of the game against Syracuse, but they did win that game.

On the other hand, Gophers suddenly could throw the ball.

Yes indeed. I meant Bucky had a meltdown with all those penalties...wasn't sure after rereading my post whether I made that very clear. It was hard keeping up at the game with those penalties...had to be 3-4 plays in a row where it seemed Wisc wouldn't even get the ball snapped before another flag would fly. At least one play it seamed like all the refs threw flags and blew whistles at literally the same time.

Zero argument from me, or anyone, that the end of their last drive was an absolute meltdown. It was beautiful.
