Though Kill and his staff have been here just a short time and have to recruit in the middle of winter, some on this board are critical of bringing in commits with no other BCS offers. So, to gain some perspective, I checked out a handful of other Big Ten teams to see what they're doing. Take it for what it's worth, if anything.
Commits With No BCS Offers:
Iowa: 1, though 2 have only one offer
Michigan: 3
Purdue: 4
MSU: 5
Northwestern: 6
Indiana: 11
Illinois: 13

To compare, how many do we have?

8-14 depending on how you look at it. For instance Tommy Olson only shows MN. I'm sure he would have had other offers. Shortell only shows one offer from MN. That is hard to believe. Bauducco only shows MN as well. Three of the JC's only have MN as lone BCS offer. Of the HS kids 8 only have MN as lone BCS offer if Bauducco, Shortell and Olson are not counted.

So this is all worthless...

Why do we get caught up on this every year...haven't we figured out that recruiting is a complete crap-shoot? You think Tank Carder had a lot of BCS offers when he went to TCU? I doubt it, but I'd take a player like him in a heartbeat.

Its out of our control. Let's just hope for the best with what we've got.

It's just fun to see some of this on the board without having to dig for it yourself.

Currently the following have BCS offers: (per Rivals)

Junior Osunde (Texas Tech)
Tamani Carter (Arizona, Stanford, Iowa)
Devin Crawford-Tufts (Wisconsin)
Quentin Gardner (Iowa, ISU)
Jephete Matilus (Illinois, Kentucky)
Kyle McAvoy (Arizona, Kansas, MSU, Northwestern, Syracuse)
Luke McAvoy (Arizona, Kansas)
Mike Moore (ISU, KSU, Kentucky)
Peter Westerhaus (ISU)

So 12 out of 21 non-BCS offer commits thus far according to Rivals. As noted above, Olson, Shortell, and Bauducco only show one offer. Also, with DCT, Rivals says he had a Sconny offer, Scout says he didn't, so you really just never know who really has what. If I were to guess with all that in mind, I'd guess we have 8 or 9 commits without another BCS offer.

DCT definitely had an offer from Wisconsin. He got both his Minnesota and Wisconsin offers from going to camp. Ohio State was also very interested but never offered that I am aware of.

I think it's important to note that some of this is dictated by when the kid commits. Olson committed during his junior year and Bauducco and Shortell committed relatively early in the process. It is likely that the Gophers' offer was the first BCS offer on the table for these guys and when the offer was taken, no one else offered.

For kicks, I dug out a post I made about Gophers recruiting about a year ago, listing the BCS offers for each recruit we signed that year (all per Rivals):

So Kill is already as good or better than all but one of the past 8 seasons. Can stop fretting about his lack of ability to recruit?

So this is all worthless...

Yeah why do we even spend time recruiting? We should just pick names out of a hat since it is such a crap shoot. That should give us an equal chance to win as Ohio State, Alabama, etc..

Check back in three years. That is a true indication of the quality of ANY recruiting class.

Exactly. How does Brew's 2008 class look now?

I would say it looks pretty good since there are at least 12 guys that will likely start or play alot from that class.

MarQueis Gray (5.9: Cincy, ILL, IU, Iowa, Kentucky, MSU, Oregon, PU)
Keanon Cooper (5.8: KU, KSU, Miami, Michigan, OU, TTU, Becky)
Brandon Green (5.8: ILL, Iowa, ISU, MSU, NU, PU, Becky)
Jewhan Edwards (5.7: Syracuse, WV)
Spencer Reeves (5.7: Arizona, Arkansas, KSU, TTU, Becky)
Eric Lair (5.6: Baylor, Nebraska, Ok St.)
Deleon Eskridge (5.5: Nebraska, Wash)
Brandon Kirksey (5.5: Arkansas, KSU, LSU, Miss)
Troy Stoudermire (5.5: Cal, ISU, KSU, UNC)
Gary Tinsley (5.5: Arkansas)
D.L. Wilhite (5.5: PU, WV)
Da'Jon McKnight (5.3)

Thats not too bad considering there were 6 JUCOs in that class (3 of which who were major contributors for their two years - Lawrence, Mckinkley, and Simmons). Also, Grant and Johnson from that class are solid back-ups/special teams players.

Not sure what this post is trying to prove. It looks like '08, '09, and '10 were far superior in the number of recruits with quality BCS offers. There's a difference between being critical of Kill for bringing in a bunch of guys with no BCS offers and not being impressed by it. I am not going to praise a coach for bringing in a kid with no BCS offers. We can't really evaluate Kill as a recruiter until next season.

Add in Brock who started his first season with the Gophers then was academically ineligible...he's now with the 49ers. If classes like this could be replicated, we would see some January bowls.

I agree. Its already apparent the 2009 class won't approach this. If it did then we would be very close to going to a good bowl already.

When you look a those names from 2004 to 2007, its amzing that we were able to field a team at all. Very few of those guys turned into even back-ups. So many of them either never made it to school, transferred, were kicked out of school, or just never turned into anything beyond a bench rider.

(Also add in Mike Rallis who is a preferred walk on from this class)

I actually brought this up in another thread, but also imagine if this class didn't have the misfortune of following a pretty thin team (I realize that we wouldn't probably have landed all of these kids had there not been opportunity for quick PT). But that is really beside the point, the point is that this is still a very talented class (despite the attrition).

Imagine how good this class would look if guys like Kirksey, Edwards, McKnight, Lair and Stoudermire were going into their JR seasons instead of their SR seasons.

To correct a common misconception...

...Mike Rallis was NOT a walk-on. He was given a full ride right away. The reason he's commonly thought to have walked on is that he didn't sign until well past Signing Day--March or April, I believe.

Actually, you're not correct. He verballed as a preferred walk-on in March of 2008. He was awarded a scholarship during fall camp in August of 2008. So, he's has been on full ride from almost the beginning, but he was absolutely a recruited walk on. The roster numbers were so small in early 2008, they had extra rides to give and Rallis got one.

It is clear there are kids rated from 2** to 5** who can play and kids in each group who can't, the stars increase the probabilities and maybe decrease the length of time required to develop. I think the odds go up a lot when everyone in a program agrees on what is needed at each position. Hopefully, that issue is resolved now.

There are so many student football players out there coaches are bound to miss a few. Recruiting is a crap shoot.
