When asked what caused him to choose Minnesota - which is a far cry from the sweltering Texas heat and mild winters - over other offers closer to home, Mayes responded, "I was blown away by the athletic facilities up there as well as the coaching staff. I feel like the Minnesota program will be able to do great things."
"When it came down to it I had a checklist of what was good and bad for me and the only negative aspect about the University of Minnesota was the distance from home but I feel like the good definitely outweighed the bad. Also I really loved the coaching staff," he added.
