Per ESPN:

No different than in politics or corporate mergers, important decisions at the highest level of college athletics often rest in the hands of a powerful few.

This week in Asheville, North Carolina, the Collegiate Commissioners Association convenes. The most high-profile item on its agenda is an early signing period for Division I football. Commissioners from the 10 FBS leagues and every FCS conference will vote -- the subdivisions can act independent of each other -- on a proposed three-day window for prospects to sign letters of intent in mid-December.

If passed, it will go into effect this year and operate on an experimental basis for two years.

Months of discussion at the conference and national levels have revealed two truths in advance of the vote:

The early signing period has earned more than enough support than the simple majority required to pass.

Its passage this week is not a foregone conclusion.

Why the contradiction?

I would like to see the early period be prior to the onset of senior seasons with the guarantee that the kid still get the offer even with injury. Makes early offers mean more and would let guys play senior year knowing they have the signing over and done with. Just my.02. Think this period will help the gophers as well as we aren't really a late flip team and would protect us from helmet school poaching on signing day a little more

Agreed. Also, interesting to note that the SEC seems to be the only Power 5 conference who is vocally opposed to an early signing period. Not surprising, as they are also probably the most notorious group for using the whole "trying to flip guys" at the 11th hour approach.

Agree... this rule would favor coaches who are better at evaluating talent and getting early offers out to under-the-radar guys and would eliminate a lot of drama from lives who don't always need it. Totally in favor of something earlier.

I'd also would like to see the early signing before the season starts. However, any early signing period would most likely benefit the Gophers.

Agree with everything here, but this won't stop the SEC. It just creates a new "11th" hour.

Seems like it doesn't it. Also the SEC is the king of way oversigning kids too.

Yeah, exactly. How is December considered Early? I'd like to see early be September. But December is better than nothing. As the coaches have often said, it will let you know with 2 months to go who is really committed and who is not.

December doesn't sound like a good time for us especially with out state kids. I wish it was in the fall.

If there's an earlier signing period, any chance this could lead to earlier official visits?? That could be good for us.

The U is absolutely beautiful during the summer months. It's too bad that it's 'empty' (using that term very very loosely) during that time - it would be nice to get more recruits here when it's nice.

I also wouldn't mind it being earlier but the flip side to that is the coaches may not want it before the season to avoid being stuck with a recruit who gets injured or suddenly takes a major step back in development. I love the idea of players being able to sign early if they are truly committed. Not sure if this benefits the U or hurts the U but it would be a good thing for college football.

Also, time, money, and energy can be focused on the remaining recruiting slots. This will be a big plus for schools like Minnesota who must spend a lot more in recruitment because of where they are in relation to recruiting hot beds.

I know it would be hard for coaches to have the early signing day start during the season, but I think they should just combine football signing day with basketball signing day. That is usually the second Wednesday of November (this year it is November 11th). Seems like a good time. Recruits get to see how the season is going to help them form a decision, coaches get the benefit of locking up early commits prior to December 1st, when they can then turn attention to the uncommitted ones.

They should get rid of signing day altogether. Instead a recruit should be able to sign anytime they want with the caveat that they have ten days from when they signed to change their mind (that way they won't be locked into an agreement signed during a visit to the campus).
