Just got an e-mail from a friend who says Colorado just accepted an invitation to the Pac 10.

No source, no links.

Because...well, you know...there is not enough wild speculation going on.

But if true, the dominoes could start falling fast.

Interesting note in the ESPN link: The Pac-16 is going to demand a BCS bid for each division and would then not have a Conference Championship game. If the Big 10 goes 16 it should do the same.

The Big 12 seems to be prepared to cease to exist (or at least not prepared to do what it takes to survive), otherwise, we would see the Big 12 trying to add new teams.

Why even call them conferences? That defeats the whole purpose. If they're going to have a BCS bid for each division, they may as well be separate conferences themselves.

That's a big problem with the superconferences. If each of the division champions gets an automatic BCS invite, then what's the conference championship game for? Automatic bids are something you give to conferences, not divisions.

Maybe we need to formalize the term "superconference", and have a superconference composed not of two divisions, but of two conferences.

This is the end of college football as we know it. I don't know whether to be happy or sad. I guess I'm happy to know we're on the inside. Typically we get screwed. I'd hate to be Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas St, Missouri, or Baylor. Do they join the MWC?

I like the suggestion that they keep the Big12 name and just pick off the best of the MWC and WAC (BYU, Utah, BoiseSt, TCU, AFA, CSU, etc.). With enough good teams, it could maintain its BCS status..... if the BCS exists after all this.

One casualty would be Kansas hoops. Oh well. If Memphis hoops can do what they do in a flimsy conference, Kansas surely can.

Since they'll need the other BCS conferences to agree to make it happen I somehow see the odds as less than good that such a change takes place.

If Kansas can't get into a super conference I think those schools you mentioned take the best from the MWC, CUSA and then pry away a few Big East schools.

But if Kansas gets scooped up by a superconference those schools are really screwed.

The reality is that a Pac-16 conference that contains USC, Texas and Oklahoma is a lock to get 2 BCS bids all of the time anyway, but to demand it seems arrogant. And in years like the next 2 when USC isn't eligible, it would like guarantee a BCS bid for an undeserving member of the former Pac-8.

If the mass-exodus happens, I don't see how they stay at 12 or why they would bother. But a conference of the remaining 5 teams, anchored by Kansas and Mizzou could certainly pick-off Utah, BYU and TCU, re-claim the Big 8 name and remain valid in both major sports, especially basketball. I have a hard time believing both Kansas and Mizzour are going to be left out of the expansion mess though. I see one/both getting swept up. I still think Mizzou ends up in the Big 10. It makes too much sense.

Good point. The rumor around town is they're going to the SEC. I read that the governor of Iowa wants the Big Ten to take ISU too. I doubt that will happen. I honestly believe the Big Ten stops with Nebraska unless ND signals go and then they go to 14 with Rutgers being the final piece.

What I find amusing is how all the talk began with the Big East schools and Missouri and now it looks like none of them are being considered. My guess is it was all a conversation starter to get more attractive prospects interested or worried enough to show interest. Notre Dame didn't bite and Nebraska did. After much reflection, I think Nebraska makes sense in the Big Ten. It will add an easy road trip for us. I think it's about 8 hours to Lincoln.

What about the ACC

People are forgetting that the ACC is still out there. What if Kansas, Kansas State and Missouri joined the ACC. It's not a huge drop from where they are football wise with Florida State, Miami, Virginia Tech, Clemson & Georgia Tech among others. It would also then be one hell of a basketball conference with Kansas, Duke and North Carolina, etc.

Don't hold your breath. The latest talk is if Notre Dame decides to join then it's Rutgers otherwise this is it for us.

It's possible, but the ACC is likely to be raided by the SEC first. I predict the SEC will pick-off GT, VT, and probably two other ACC schools. It's interesting that they may be talking directly to KU though. Perhaps Kansas and Kansas State both end up in the SEC. Mizzou will ultimately end up in the Big 10, IMO. Iowa State and Baylor are scrwed. The ACC would want no part of them, and would likely replace the 4 SEC raided schools with Syracuse, UConn, Pitt, etc.

This is all starting to sound like a fantasy football draft.

If this happened and the 'conference' stayed in tact, would they get to keep the current TV contracts?

That all depends on whether the ACC wants to expand or not. They might be willing to sit on the sidelines this time.

I think so. The issue would be what happens to the value of the contract that is going to be renegotiated in a few years?

Why would Texas join the PAC 10 if they had an invite from the Big Ten?
2 hour difference in start times is going to be a killer.
Colorado doesn't have baseball? Isn't that what the Pac 10 is all about?

It's too quiet right now in South Bend. Somethings up.
