Andy Greder of the Pioneer Press tweeted out an update.

Update: #Gophers transfer guard Tyler Cochran has been doing individual workouts and rehab as he works back from pre-season foot surgery, Coach Ben Johnson said Thursday.

Look-ahead: Johnson did not have a timeline for Cochran's debut in games, but tangible progress has been made.

(hey - this may account to re-arranging the deck chairs on The Titanic - but I'm still interested in seeing what Cochran has to offer.)

I'm still hoping that this team can find a groove. Whenever he comes back, it could happen. I WANT this team to succeed. I want our team to show its depth. Mitchell is still getting back to 100%, Asuma is improving and Cochran seems to be a real ball hawk and a nose for the ball, which is something we really need.
Now, WILL we? I wouldn't bet the farm on it..

I admire your enthusiasm, but even with Cochran we will still be woefully unathletic and poorly coached. Even at perfect health for every player, we will be the underdog in each Big10 game this season.

Tangible progress has been made, we're closer than we've ever been, and the check is in the mail (someday soon).

Yes, of course, but underdogs will win some games if they play enough of them. Winless teams are fairly rare.

I think I looked at winless conference teams in the past 25 years and it was Rutgers twice and a few 1 win teams. Maybe northwestern but I can’t recall. It was during a BenJo season the gophers were terrible.

Anyway, very rare. And I think it hasn’t been done in a 20 game conference schedule.

There’s always hope they can pull it off

Atleast he's out of town he walking boot. Dude is built like a bowling ball

Yes, it hasn't been done in a 20 game Big Ten schedule. I went back to the turn of the century and the last one to have a winless conference season was Northwestern at the turn of the century. Ben Johson played for that team so it's been mentioned already that Ben has the chance to accomplish that feat both as a player and a coach.

Yes, there have been a few one game winners. Rutgers did it in 2015-16 which was the only reason we didn't finish last with two wins that year. Penn State won only one conference game in 2004-05. Northwestern did the same in 2007-08. The probation era Indiana team won only one in the following year.

I’ve been watching Big Ten teams on B1G+. The only team I’ve felt we have at least a chance of beating is Washington.
Rutgers is hard to figure out. One game they looked like a contender, the next game they lose to Kennesaw State on the road. That's what you get with a team led by 2 freshman, no matter how high they are rated.

He's probably best left as the mythical "what if". Ben's best players are the ones we never see. Isiah Ihnen was a huge key while injured. Would have been a starter. Kayden Betts, if only he wasn't redshirting etc. Once they became available players suddenly they're not good enough to see the court on the worst team in the B1G.

Cochran’s Gopher playing career may end up shorter than that of Josh Martin, who came in at the same time as Nate Mason and had a cup of coffee in Dinkytown before transferring out before Christmas of his freshman year.

I remember going to Raising Cane’s for postgame meal in December, then Martin came in a little later looking all disheveled. Then the Strib a day or two later announced he was transferring. Weird deal, because I think Pitino was really high on him. Must’ve been homesick. Can’t remember where he transferred.

Cal-Poly or something like that....wasn't P5....and he never did much IIRC, but he was one of those "great get" recruits that never did anything.

This.

Yep, it was Cal Poly. He later ended up using his final year at Santa Clara and actually played against the Gophers in that 2018 November MTE in Vancouver (freshman Kalscheur hit 7 of 12 threes in that Santa Clara game and then, of course, hit the winner in the Washington game).

at a press availability this week, Johnson said Cochran is still week to week. He's working out but has not been cleared to go 5-on-5 or full contact yet. a writer asked him if Cochran has considered sitting out the year to get a medical redshirt, but Johnson said (paraphrasing), there's a lot of season left and Cochran wants to play if possible.

I mean, that would be a 2nd best case scenario. I could see that happening depending on what they're record is and if they have any momentum when hes ready.
I really want to see him in action. He decommitted from Oregon State to come here so he obviously thinks he can make an impact. I'm not holding my breath though

Are we getting to the point where it may be in his best interest to redshirt and try again next year. Whether it's here or probably elsewhere?

Can he redshirt again?
I'm sure he could medically and go through the process of getting a medical waiver. If Parker Fix can stay in college in eight years and that TE at Miami for nine I don't see why not if he decides that what he wants and doesn't play this year

Can he redshirt again?
If he has used up his regular redshirt then the only option would be a medical one. But to get one of those it would have to be deemed that he couldn't play all season, if he gets to the point where he could play at some point in January then he wouldn't be eligible for a medical as I understand the process.

But if he hasn't used a regular RS, but got a medical already?

Serious question, as I know nothing about him as a player. Ability-wise, is Tyler Cochran closer to Elijah Hawkins or Lu’Cye Patterson?
I’m not sure when/if we will see him this season…I’m just wondering if there is any hope or potential for a lift. That’s where I’m at after only three B18 games. 😖

He is 6'2" and 220 so he definitely won't be anything like Hawkins..... :)

He has been a solid player in the MAC over his career, who knows how big of an impact he will have but I think he was viewed as one of our better transfer gets so he should help. At this point anything that changes up the mix on the court is probably a good thing because what we have right now isn't working.

that is a very very very very very nice way of putting it. I agree.
