He doesn't have a home run gear buy by God I love the kid. He's what we've been missing around here since the Mason days; a legit B1G running back. Great job David, keep it up.

He's not a speed demon by any means but he does have a good mix of speed and power. Glad someone has stepped up. He could be our first 1,000 yard rusher in awhile.

The dude is a straight up class-act too. His post-game comments about his performance was that it was 1) a great team win and 2) gave a S/O to the OL and WRs for their superb blocking.

Lots to like. Secures the ball. Finds the path. Runs toward the goal line, not the sideline. Fights for the extra yard. I like him a lot. When opponents key more on him, our QBs can thrive on the option. Play actions to him up the middle then a quick WR slant can work. This is now the first time in several years that I'm starting to go into each Saturday thinking we can win -- not that we will win, but that we can. Step one complete.

We need him too. Kirkwood has struggled this year and Roddy is out. Really happy for Cobb that he's found success and it couldn't have happened at a better time. And like Bieber said, the kid is a class act.

1) He goes down, we screwed.

2) I would like to point out that I named him our starting RB after about his third carry this year. It was obvious to me!

Cobb reminds me a little bit of MB3. Not the fastest, not the biggest, but runs hard & gets the job done.

Obviously we don't want Cobb to go down but I feel good about Kirkwood & Williams as back-ups. A legit big-back, with talent like Williams can really be special once he matures.

Cobb was always a hard worker when I went to open practices. You could tell the coaches were rooting for him because of his effort, that was 2 years ago. Hard work pays off.

One of the player's girlfriends (I think C. Thompson's) tweeted last week that every time Cobb had a big run at Nebraska, his Grandpa would run up and down the steps at the bank. Another reason to root for him.

I checked coming into the game Cobb had 615 yds and rushed for 188, so he's at 803 yds ,with 3 to play. Even though 2 of 3 teams still on our schedule have stout defenses I like his chances to get 1000.

The bowl game counts too.

But how many stars did he have on Rivals?

He's not like MB3, we won't see another back quite like that in our lifetimes. He's more like Tellis Redmond I would say; very solid player who gets the tough yards. My favorite player of all time was, repeat was, Maroney until I thought he started to dog it his last year here. I was running errands before the game started and listening to the pre-game and they had Maroney on there and he was still talking about getting "back into the league" even though he hasn't played since '10. Interesting that with MB3 going fourth round and Maroney first MB3 probably out earned him five to one; Marion got paid big time by the Cowboys after his rookie year contract was up. Maroney hasn't been back to see a game in The Bank and he sounds like he's really kind of just drifting through life.

Studwell has been all over Cobb all year. Kirkwood looks lost. I would have liked to see Roddy today against that D as a change of pace, too bad he is nicked up.

Early in the year with our "basic" smash mouth approach Kirkwood and Williams could be ok. In our new jet sweep motion dependent attack we need a RB with patience, vision and a little shiftiness. Cobb is all of that. Good call Studwell.

Kirkwood is built to get 3 yards out of nothing.

He doesn't know what to do with the gaping holes the O-line is creating. It calls for a different kind of back.

Cobb is a Terry Jackson clone who transferred out when he wasn't getting any carries after Maroney and MB111 took over I believe Jackson ran for a 1000 yards the year before.,

Barber III had an amazing ability to be moving sideways and still picking up yards. I remember that one run in '03 vs. WI where he had NO room on the sideline, but somehow got about 11 and a TD.

The crazy thing is his Rivals page lists a Stanford offer. Man I wish he would have redshirted in 2011.

If you attend the open practices, this isn't anything new. Cobb broke at least 1 big gain every time. His vision is very good. He also made some key blocks in pass protection today. Combine this with him being an asset in the passing game and you got yourself a damn good back.

I'll go back a little deeper into the maroon and gold past. He reminds me a ton of Thomas Hamner. Doesn't have the power of MB3, the straight speed of LoMo, nor the shiftiness of Redmon and others. He just always makes good decisions on which hole to hit, has great vision, takes what the defense gives him, and ends up getting good rushing games. I'm loving what he's giving us.

He got 1300 yards and I agree with the comparison.

Terry Jackson also played for Coach Kill at Southern Illinois. He was a bit snake-bitten with playing behind good running backs, he played with Brandon Jacobs for Coach Kill.

Laurence Maroney --> Marion Barber --> Gary Russell --> David Cobb --> Berkley Edwards and Jeff Jones?? We are a running back program!

i would say that for Roderick but i think Kirkwood has some ability to make a guy miss and has a little lateral movement

Why is that?

You must have not paid attention when MB3 was here or watched him in the NFL. He ran like a man possessed, he pass blocked like an all conference OL man, he caught the ball like a WR and was pure class as a human being. Most of all, he had a will to win and toughness that you just can't teach as well as an uncanny ability to get into the end zone. I was truly priviledged to watch him play for the Gophers. The total package that he was may never be duplicated in my lifetime.

not counting the nfl, I'd take Maroney over Barber every day. Barber was a great player but he was far from a "once in a lifetime" player.
