Coach Warmath is classic and I love that so many former Gophers take time to celebrate with him each year. From Shooter:
There were lots of laughs among nearly two dozen former Gophers football players and admirers of Murray Warmath on Tuesday in Edina at a 97th birthday party held for the coach, who led Minnesota to its only Rose Bowl appearances (1961-62). Those attending included Dick Larson, Jim Carter, Bob Stein, Bob and Pinky McNamara, Mike Swendsen, Mike Reid, Jerry Burns, Paul Wiggin, Jim Brunzell, John Williams, Tom King, Jim Soltau, Tony Phillippi and Peter Frantzen.
Brunzell, 60, the former pro wrestler from White Bear Lake, recalled a night before a Warmath-coached team played Michigan. The Gophers had a choice between two movies to watch as a team, "True Grit" starring John Wayne, or "Easy Rider" starring Peter Fonda.
Brunzell recommended "Easy Rider." On the way out of the theater, Warmath found Brunzell and told him it was the worst movie he had ever seen. The next day, the Gophers got trampled by Michigan.
At Tuesday's birthday party, a conversation between famed former football coach Johnny Majors and Warmath was shown via video. The video is included in the archives at Warmath's alma mater, Tennessee. Murray, who remains lucid, is the longest living former Tennessee athlete.
"I plan to make it to 100 and then some," Warmath said.
