Quote from Myron's blurb on Joe Coleman committing:

"I watched Coleman play in a high school tournament near St. Cloud a few months ago and he looked like a Division I athlete. He has the physique and athleticism to play at the next level."

Soooooo, if he's a HS senior right now, does "the next level" mean he'll be able to play college ball? I sure hope so if the Gophers offered him a scholarship. If not, it sure seems like a big gamble.

Perhaps "the next level" means juco ball?

I think "next level" typically means the pros, but Myron is definitely making a big assumption by thinking all his readership would pick up on that. He probably meant that he already looks like he's ready to play Div 1 ball, whereas many HS Seniors (outside of the top, top, recruits) need time to adjust to the College game and pack some muscle on, etc. Then again, I'm making a lot of assumptions by saying all that. Who knows what Myron is saying? It's like interpreting a foreign language with him.

Apparently one of our freshman guards is in fact an undercover reporter for the Star Tribune. Sounds like this story could make some headlines.

if this sounds like a good story with good headlines we can be sure that only marcus will cover it. i can't believe that the first kid in two years locally to sign with the u doesn't get a single mention in the state's biggest paper. myron should be ashamed as should his editor.

Keep in mind, Myron was the one who broke this story, he was all over it. For me, personally, I'd rather hear the news first, and it's more important that it's reported in a timely manner. He tweeted about it, and blogged about it.

I think you all know I love Joe Coleman, and I think he's s class act. However, it's not exactly front page news that we got a 3 star player that's not in the top 100. Look at how much space is allocated to the Gophers, and on top of that, a recruit committing...it's not a huge priority in this market. We're the ones that really care, but we're a small proportion. This is no way takes away from the fact that I'm very excited to get him, but as a whole - the Twin Cities probably don't care all that much.

GL, are you insinuating that we diehard Gopher fans are not the center of the world, and that the print media should not cater to us? Heck, if they did, they might sell ten or twelve new subscriptions.

You are right, though, with football going, basketball recruiting is not real news in the 24 hour cycle.

.... with football going, basketball recruiting is not real news in the 24 hour cycle.

What I've observed the past few Saturdays, is that it doesn't appear that Gopher football is going anywhere.

Really? I sense this team heading in a very distinct direction. ;)

Tubby= inhereits a 9-22 team, 114 year old arena, and a pretty weak history in the long run. oh and no practice facility.
Brewster= Decent team, brand new arena, strong fb history, newer practice facility.

Who had it better to start out? End results?

Tubby= 3 20 win seasons, ncca tournements, program going in the right direction
Brewster= losing to some weak teams, post season loses to teams like ISU, program going downhill in a brand new stadium which i thought was pretty hard to do.

That's a terrible justification for not getting in print this story.

The print edition of the paper is full of crap that most people don't care about. If they solely used a criteria that they would only print stuff that the Twin Cities as a whole care about, then the paper would be a half-page long. But, the job of a newspaper is to print a broad cross-section of news that will hit a lot of different people with a lot of different interests.

The paper runs LPGA golf scores, news on the St. Paul Saints, high school cross country results, MIAC soccer players of the week, NASCAR tidbits, small college volleyball junk, and all kinds of stuff that isn't designed for a large population base of people to be interested in.

Let's recap - a kid from the local basketball factory, who led his team to the state championship, who was on the all-tournament team, who is a consensus Top 150 player nationally, who had a great summer in the AAU circuit, and has a brother and uncle who played for the Gophers committed to the Gophers and the Strib guy broke the story and yet they chose not to run anything in print about it?? I'm sorry, but there's enough general interest there to warrant a print edition story.

In fact, I am really surprised if that indeed is true. I have no reason to doubt the always reliable Bleed, but has anyone else confirmed that this never showed up in print? That is really stunning, if true. What a terrible oversight, particularly if Myron broke the story as GL suggested. What a slap in the face to him to break the story and then have his editors not include it in the print edition. If true, that's really remarkable.

I can 100% confirm that it was not in the Saturday print edition. There was a small blurb in the Sunday print edition.

I talked to a current sports writer STrib and a former sports writer at the STrib and both were shocked that there wasn't anything in the print edition on Saturday. They both said it absolutely should have been in the print edition (not front page sports, but a nice story inside).

Go Gophers!!
