Clash of the Classes

A couple of thoughts:

- Sacar Anim was very impressive. I hadn't heard of the kid, but he's explosive, he can shoot a little bit, he finishes at the rim, I hope the Gophers take a look at him.

- Amir Coffey is athletic and smooth and has great court vision, but his shot was off, and I didn't like how he treated the game. Very casual, as a bunch of kids a year behind him took over a game. I still think he's somebody we need to look at, but I was a bit troubled by some things.

- 2017 has some good talent in it. Gary Trent Jr was a bit of a ball hog, but looked pretty good in terms of creating offense. And there was a big kid who was getting absolutely every rebound as a 6'5 widebody. If he grows, he'll be worth taking a look at.

- 2016 besides Coffey didn't have that many people who impressed me.

- Macura has a very smooth jump shot, and surprising athleticism. But he's obviously far, far behind the big three.

- The Big Three were absolutely incredible. Reid is so nasty inside. Huge, aggressive, great hands, a good defender. I really want him on our squad. Rashad is so athletic and good at ballhandling. His outside shots were not dropping, and he kept shooting them. He was kind of ballhoggy, to be honest, and I didn't like that, but he had so many entertaining plays, I was definitely willing to overlook it. Tyus was his normal steady self. I may be wrong, but it seemed like Reid and Tyus and Reid and Rashad had much better rapport than Rashad and Tyus.

- All in all it was an amazing event. I hope they do it again next year. It would have been much better if Jarvis Johnson, Henry Ellenson, and Alex Illikainen there.

Too bad no Inkinen... He and Henery would have been a load for Reid & '14 to handel.

Looking forward to seeing Coffey.

I'm not a spellcheck nazi by any stretch, but you are not really even close here.

My, my, my. A spelling nazi, drunk at this time of the night. Who'd a thunk it.

Happens every time I type on my phone, call me old school, hate the touch screen keyboard. Admittedly the Ink'nen was pretty bad.

-To the point above, Coffey has the talent, but lost them the game by not trying to block a single shot or go after any rebounds.

-Trent Jr. was extremely polished, poised and confident, with a beautiful shot.

Joevon Walker used this game to make a huge impression. He finished with 11 pts and 17 rbs. Will be at Minnehaha Academy

JP shot was good, handles, defense on the ball were both solid. It was clear he wanted to join the dunk show and forced it, trying to dunk over somebody when there were two defenders waiting for him 4' away from the hoop. Tyus & Reid/JP seemed to have a very good rapport.

It was great to see Tyus, Reid and Vaughn playing together, for a while they were rolling early and having a great time. In the second half I noticed some disconnect, Vaughn wanted the ball in his hands at all times and doesn't want to give it up. At times Tyus had better options to go to (in positions to score) but Vaughn was demanding the ball.

Nice Opportunity to See these guys play...

My take:
Tyus is very skilled but he thinks he's better than Jordan in his prime. He's not
fun for me. (I'm well aware...my problem)

Vaughn is silly athletic. His dunks for a high school kid were spectacular. He finds a way to score. Attacks, gets to the line. His shot is nice. It was not going in on this night however...as mentioned he did keep shooting. That's a good thing from my perspective. However, his obvious pantomime to rehearse his shooting form repeatedly and shake his head was disappointing. He needs a mentor about body language, visualization and leadership. Not saying it was horrible by any means. Just saying it's an area he can improve. He's supposedly a really good ball handler but lost it at least twice dribbling way too high. Huge upside. Dynamic player. Certainly must be a top 10 guy in the country, as advertised.

Reid Travis definitely had the best night of anyone in my opinion. He would be really nice to have as a Gopher. His shot is nice. You can kinda see him thinking as he shoots.
It doesn't flow yet. He's strong, he's wide, he's got height, he's athletic, he's tough, he works at it. He has the presence of a respectful, hardworking, good teammate. Seems like somebody everyone would like to have on their team as a teammate. He's a keeper.

JP I thought was the 4th best player. Nobody else said look at me I'm better than he is...to me. Ball goes in the the basket. Willing to attack the basket and is creative in his adjustments to finish at the rim. Not as naturally athletic as the top 3. Some bulldog in him.

In the freshman and sophomore game Coffey is WAY above the group in presence and athleticism. Completely stood out to me. However, as somebody else mentioned he didn't play smart. Stood at the top of the circle on defense and tried to cherry pick on the other end most of the night. Just never really got involved. Never got dirty in football terms...his uniform would have been spotless at games end. But, all in all clearly the most gifted player of those two teams.

It was a great chance to see these guys in one place.

Thanks for the summary. Any other analysis would be appreciated--always like hearing this stuff. Didn't look quite as crowded as I expected.

Gary Trent Jr. is an intriguing prospect. Looks like he has some potential as a scorer. Goanar Mar has some work to do, but has a ton of length for a young wing player and has soft touch. Could be a highly recruited player if he works at it. Lots of potential in these younger classes. We could be in for a steady flow of big-time talent coming out of this state. It isn't just the Big 3. Keep 'em home Coach P.
