I think Claeys is very, very good. I think his D plays better than their talent level. I'm not quite sure why we seem to fall asleep for a series or two each game and/or why we tend to give up a big run play right up the middle for a TD quite often but overall I actually just love to watch our D play. What a change from what we've had the past 25 years, right? I can't stand our offense and I think our OL are the biggest underacheivers on the team. Both Limegrover's responsibility. As mentioned in the game day thread they look fat to me; fatter than they need to be and less athletic than they would be if they were lighter. They don't consisently get movement at the line of scrimmage and to date the pass blocking has been horrendous. Why we don't line up under center with multiple TEs in the game on nearly every play I don't know. Limegrover seems oddly married to the read option play even late in the game with our QB having taken multiple shots and our starter probably out a month with a hammy. It's year three here and I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel. We ultimately wear out these crappy teams we're playing but the O starts out flat and stays flat for much of the first half and then starts to play with a sense of urgency only when it looks like we may lose the game. Other than our D touchdowns and return TDs things would have gotten hairy this year so far. The morons on the site will say the coaches obviously know better, but I'd like to see Foster Bush and Tommy Olson get some P-T I just don't think Bak or Christenson are very good and we need our OL and OC to perform a heck of a lot better if we're going to be competitive in the B10. Thank God for Claeys his bunch has really shown the way for us so far this year; and last for that matter. His group is fun to watch vs. our O which causes me to cringe more often than not.

It's a start.

Anyone that thinks this offense is a formula for success in the Big Ten is nuts. My homework assignment for this week is to figure out who the hell our fourth string QB is, because he'll be the one leading us into the Tumbleweed Bowl.

The Gophers have gotten a little bit better each year. Staff continuity has been the key - you don't have different offenses and defenses being implemented each year. I still haven't seen an offense for the Gophers as good as the one Glen Mason had each year - that one could run on the best teams in the NCAA. I don't know if we will ever be at that level again, but at least I am seeing improvements and that is encouraging. Defensively, it sure is nice to see us getting better on that side of the line. To win championships, you have to have a good defense. I also like seeing the improvements on the special teams. And finally, we are getting a lot smarter out there, too. It sure is nice not seeing all the stupid penalties!!!!

The reason the QB doesn't line up under center is because we have a line that is incapable of moving anyone out of the way and they are seemingly too fat to pull. We have running backs that aren't able to create their own space. The only possible way to move the ball is with a QB option. The issue is now, how long before both QB's are on the injuried list.

This is the offense that Kill and Limegrover have always run. A lot of pistol read options.

I don't think that matters. We have battering ram RBs and our three TEs are rock solid. Maxx Williams needs to be on the field the whole time and getting used accordingly and we can use the read option as one part of our O, but Limegrover is like an old LP record that got stuck he just keeps going back to read option over and over and over again. They need to play to our strengths and the play calling is absolutely undefendable. Now, if they come out in B10 play and set the world on fire and it becomes obvious that they were just not putting their O on film here in these BS games against the little sisters of the poor than I will humbly apologize for my ignorance. I just don't see that being the case, however.

Don't tell me Mason's offenses could run against any team in the NCAA. There were plenty of games where we just needed one more first down to put it away and we couldn't gain a yard. We never had a ground game when we needed it most.

Anyone notice that this team is better in the second half than the first? Anyone? Both these guys are strategists and thinkers, not over-reactors. You figure out what works and doesn't work and adjust.

Since we haven't had a coaching staff that knows how to adjust at halftime since 1985, I understand. Claeys might end up as the best DC we've had when it comes to halftime adjustments.

So far, we've punished three teams with our running game the second half of three games. I'd say it's not perfect, but it's working.

+1 The game is all about adjustments

Good points, especially re use of the tight ends and overuse of the read option.

Some good points, but do you really have to do it with calling people "The morons on the site"?! Why do people feel the need to do that? If you don't agree with someone, why are they a "moron." There are plenty of views/takes I don't agree with, but have never felt the need to call someone moron. It takes away from an otherwise good post.

I bet you will be hanging with the sisters.

We are still not a senior laden group on O and not much better on D. I see both coaches getting playing experience depth for our guys, but we still need leaders. Limegrover may not have as much to work with yet? I thought it was evident in the fall when our D looked ahead of our O. Both Limegover and Claeys looked pretty good at NIU and against us. I guess time will tell...

Those of you on here who are worried about injuries because our QB's "run too much" crack me up. It is part of the offense. It requires the defense to account for 1 more player. Does Manziel run too much? How about Mariota? Brett Hundley? I could go on and on and on...

You would think our players are made out of marshmallow to be a qb at the U the way people are guessing that we will need 4 quarterbacks for the season, but that is all it is guessing. From day 1, the coaching staff has said they install more plays as the season progresses. What impresses me is the downfield blocking of many of the receivers on running plays. They lock their guys down to a much greater degree than I have seen since the days of Tutu Atwell or maybe even Marian Barber II (not III). Of course way back then, I was boozin from a flask at those games. So, I could be cloudy in my memory. So, if you must, lift the midline finger to the anterograde position, recite the pledge -- "That guy is nuts". Then resume the relaxed position of the midline finger.

There's quite a difference between scrambling out of the pocket and trying to bust runs off tackle. Our QBs aren't great runners, not that elusive, but even a guy like Gray couldn't hold up for a season. Sit back with your rosé colored glasses on - don't worry a bit.

I like your intellectual integrity and forthright nature. Just to let you know, they are maroon colored glasses he is wearing.

Ohio St. seemed to do well last year and the first part of this year with that formula. Braxton Miller has nearly as many rushing attempts as passes in his career.

Really? That is what you are going with? If you think the only runs the QB's I mentioned have are scrambles, then you are greatly mistaken. Good try. Good effort. My views have nothing to do with rose (or maroon) colored glasses. The simple fact is that the QB run is part of the offense this coaching staff believes in. Therefore they have recruited dual threat QB's, like many other programs around the nation and the ones I mentioned above.

This is the impression I have gotten, Leidner seems to be better suited to it than Nelson.

We were one bad play from Streveler stepping in as our QB. No offense to him, but he is not ready to QB in a Big 10 game at this point. I don't see how this is sustainable. The defenses are only going to be bigger and faster once we start playing some real competition.

Leidner played really well today, but I'm sure he was banged up after the game. He took a lot of pretty big hits, probably because he ended up with more rushes than Cobb or Williams.

Perhaps this is an option and ONLY an option if Jerry Kill and his family decide that his health is more important than the stresses of being a D1 B1G football coach.
Even though Tracy Claeys' super soft coverage agitates me more than anything, I sincerely believe he produces very good defenses. Tag that along with a
Glen Mason power run offense.... whoa. Think Mase would come back, ONLY IF that would be needed upon Jerry's decisions?..

*I have always been in the belief that Mason was A defense (not necessarily a 'good' defense, just any defense) away from TWO Rose Bowls.

Rose colored glasses? Are you literally this dense? He didn't argue that everything is good on this team, he argued that this offense isn't destined for failure in the Big 10, and he's right.

We have a ton of problems on offense. Our receivers are awful, our OL is not dominating and we lack any real "playmaker". I'm far from wearing "rose colored glasses", but Stan is 100% right. A ton of teams using running QBs. Some of those teams are in the Pac 12, the SEC, Big 12 and even a couple in the Big 10. Their QBs take hits, from just as physically imposing defenses. Our style of offense can work in the Big 10, it has.

No, he argued that this offense will not result in more QB injuries than other prevalent offensive styles. I disagree.

Nowhere did I argue the position you outline above. You might want to brush up on your reading comprehension. My point was that the QB run is part of the offense, much like many other programs. I NEVER compared injury rates to other offenses. Keep trying, you are doing a great job of projecting a position onto my argument to help support yours...
