Claeys should sit Eric Murray, possibly other Seniors in a potential bowl game

Curious to see how many agree with me here. Given that Eric Murray is a virtual certainty to be drafted, there is no sense in him playing in this bowl game when nothing is on the line. Other Seniors who may be drafted should be given the option of playing/not playing in the bowl game. Most are aware of the risks of this game and the best thing for Murray's future (and possibly others) would be to make it to the NFL Combine as healthy as possible.

Wow, usually your terrible posts center around some hissy fit anytime the name Glen Mason is written anywhere. I think this one takes it up a notch.

Considering none of the bowls the Gophers have played in since 1962 meant much, by your logic no one should have played in those games. What exactly was on the line in the Texas bowl, or even the Citrus Bowl. Please

I definitely agree. It shouldn't be a coaches decision, but were I in his shoes id be asking not to play.

Too much money on the line to tear an ACL in my last college game ever.

I have actually wondered why more players with potential NFL careers haven't chosen on their own to sit out of these games to protect their future earnings. I have also wondered the same thing when it comes to High School All-star games. If a kid gets hurt in the All-star game ... does he lose his college scholarship ... or does the All-star game have some sort of insurance that protects the players.

No. For most of the seniors, it's the last time they'll ever suit up, and you're robbing them of the chance to do so. For the ones with pro aspirations, it's another chance to put something on film for scouts against what will be at worst a decent opponent. Finally, you're sending the message that the best players don't play. Just a horrible, horrible idea all around - totally unsurprising considering the source.

Wow. You ARE FLICKING nuts.

Yea I would, if I were a draft pick, only play when I want to. Or get your ass out there and show how good you are. Sitting out is the same as quitting. No way a real competitor sits out to "save" himself for a draft. This would be weak tit area.

Any true teammate would want to play the next game and win one for the team. I can't imagine anyone bowing out. Not just MInnesota players but any players on a CFB team in a bowl game. This is all about competing. That's what these guys signed up for.

Anyone one of these guys could be hit by a car walking across the street.

Unsurprising to see two of the biggest jokes on the board be incapable of just responding with their opinion. NFL teams frequently sit guys in the last game of the year if their fate is decided (one way or another). Eric Murray, and others in his situation, could lose a million dollars if things go poorly. I think there is a legitimate argument to having him play, but it's not what I would do.

so...sit out this game, so he can then play in the all important senior bowl? The senior bowl being a chance to play for scouts, just like this would be? So all probable draft picks that are playing in bowls that aren't the CFP should sit out?

I don't agree with this take at all...not at all.

If he sits out the game, that really will not reflect well on his work ethic. He really hasn't made himself look like a surefire thing at the next level this year, so every chance to go out and prove yourself is important. If he were a slam dunk first rounder, I maybe could see him thinking about this. But those guys usually take out insurance on themselves (a la Mariota and Winston last year) to provide backup if they're hurt.
Every day you're on display for scouts. Why give them any reason whatsoever to drop you down their draft board?

That's the best explanation of what has gone wrong with college football I've read.

That is a good point. My counter would be the Senior Bowl is far more important to Murray than a bowl game. The most important part of that process is the practices where he will get a number of opportunities to go one on one with highly regarded wide receivers. His opportunity to raise his stock during the Senior Bowl week is far greater than anything that could be accomplished playing in the Gophers bowl game.

Right - post #1 and post #10.

This isn't the NFL. Also, when's the last time you saw teams sitting guys because they're out of the playoffs? That's equally stupid. Coaches are trying to win as many games as possible to keep their jobs and players are trying to play as much as possible to keep their roster spots. Teams sit players when their spot in the playoffs is decided, because there are more games to play. It's a strategic decision. The Gophers don't have any more games to play. There's no strategy involved.

Sure glad you were never one of my teammates. Or players.

He probably shouldn't practice either, nor do any exercise, maybe not even leave his apartment since he might hurt himself doing those activities.

So at what point EG#9, do you draw the line on not playing? For instance, was the bowl game last season important enough? Is there a certain cut off in bowl importance where you think the seniors should sit?
And no, I don't agree with you.

I wouldn't sit him and more importantly EM31 wouldn't want to sit. Still, not that bad of a question/discussion point. Not sure why the OP is being savaged for it?

I'd say "Nuts" to this surrender ultimatum.

They could be injured in any game. Players can't pick and choose which games they will play in - they have scholarships that say otherwise.

I have never known a football player that when healthy didn't want to play. You think he wants to remember his last game collegiate game as a loss to Wisconsin? The dude will play, as will all the seniors!

Guess Winston and Mariota shouldn't have played in their bowl games last year?

Sit Murray in the bowl game.....but he's gonna play in the Senior Bowl to get an NFL look, anyway?

MMMMKAAY!!!!!!

Spoof, I knew what you were going to say before you said it..

And you probably know my reaction too! It's a dumb premise for a 100 reasons. When it comes to team, to leadership, to teammates, you just don't get it. It's football. That's a team sport.

As an NFL GM would you draft a guy who voluntarily sat out of his college team's bowl game so he wouldn't get hurt?? That's a guy you want in the foxhole with you?

Do you realize that I said they shouldn't sit him? We agree on this one 60's Guy. Stop looking for reasons to disagree with me.
