STrib: Offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca decides to stay with P.J. Fleck, Gophers

Gophers offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca is staying put. According a source with knowledge of the situation, Ciarrocca will not join West Virginia’s staff under new coach Neal Brown and will remain with Minnesota.

Ciarrocca, who also serves as the Gophers’ quarterbacks coach, was being pursued by West Virginia for an offensive position on its coaching staff. The West Virginia-based “Eer Sports,” a 247Sports.com affiliate, reported Monday that Brown is in the process of adding Ciarrocca to his staff.

But on Tuesday, Yahoo Sports reported that West Virginia was finalizing a deal to make newly-hired Louisville running backs coach Chad Scott its co-offensive coordinator. Scott was tight ends coach at North Carolina the past three seasons under coach Larry Fedora, who was fired in November. He was hired by Louisville on Friday. Scott was running backs coach at Troy in 2008 and ’09 while Brown was the Trojans’ offensive coordinator.

Under Ciarrocca, the Gophers offense finished strong in 2018, averaging 32.5 points in the final six games, including a 3-1 stretch that secured bowl eligibility and a 7-6 record. Minnesota’s offense operated so efficiently that it didn’t have to punt at all in the 34-10 victory over Georgia Tech in the Quick Lane Bowl and went the final 41:48 of a 37-15 romp at Wisconsin without punting.

Am I reading this right that Scott was just hired by Louisville on Friday, and WVU is trying to hire him away?

He'd also be leaving a program seemingly on the rise for another with a brand new coach who may or may not be any good at the Power 5 level.

Somebody may have already pointed this out to you, but Pennsylvania and West Virginia have a long-standing college football relationship.
 





No issue between PJ and KC.
No desire to be closer to home.
Just a standard money grab.
I should have seen it.
Glad he is staying.

Are you kidding me? Save a few bucks in taxes and send you kids to the 45th ranked schools in the country! And a state ranked 43rd in poverty. And a bottom level college....

Yeah people always make comments about Arizona and Florida at 0%


Not being surrounded by old people and people educated in Florida and Arizona might be worth 9%

Plus I have a sweat problen

Actually, I think Morgantown is pretty area. I'm not saying it has the economic stability that the Twin Cities has...but it looks like a beautiful area.

AZ is at 4.8% ITR and it’s up to 10% sales tax depending on city. Plus they collect $100 million a year from Indian casinos, which is a $100 million more than Minnesota.

Average age in Minnesota is 37.9. Arizona 37.5.

Go figure.

Like that silly story that got pedaled about people leaving MN because of taxes.

On top of the reasons being made up in that story....half the people in that story moved to CA....

People move for opportunities, not taxes

I've done it twice in my career and it worked out for me both times. I sleep well at night and won't regret it on my death bed.

Oddly enough, West Virginia has one of the highest median ages at 42.3.

I think the thing that might be different in Arizona is the older people are concentrated into certain retirement communities.

Anyway...back to Kirk staying here....a good thing I suppose.

Glad Kirk is staying. He might be a HC in a year or two if things fall his and the Gophers way.


Immigration, economy, and geography.

Retirees only add minimal population growth. People generally don’t move because of taxes. In fact, people generally don’t move geographically any more. It’s one of our economic problems in the US - the decline of our geographic mobility which makes it harder to recover from recessions and uneven economic growth.

I know two people who moved out of state due to taxes. One moved to ND and took his business with him.

I don't know how how common it is, but it does happen, and it isn't silly.

It would be interesting to see how he thinks the math works out on that ... the story I noted was about individual income taxes.

Business is a whole other story and varies wildly depending on what you do, and etc. In my experience a lot of business owners really are poorly informed about their options. Granted, it's no fun to have to think about taxes when you're running a business yourself, but if it saves you having to live somewhere else (I'm still skeptical as that makes sense $$$$ wise as a sole reason for moving) it can be worth it.
