Chris Monter's Gophers Basketball Recruiting Nuggets & Tid-Bits: Signing Day, Gophers and B1G Notes

Minnesota is expected to sign three players when the early signing period begins Wednesday. They had hoped to land a fourth, but Reid Travis of Minneapolis DeLaSalle committed to Stanford over the Gophers this past Friday.

The Gophers will ink Carlos Morris, a 6-foot-4 guard from Chipola (FL) CC, Josh Martin, a 6-foot-7 forward from Bothell (WA) High and guard Nate Mason. They will likely keep their remaining scholarship available for the late signing period, which starts in April.

The Gophers will lose senior guards Maverick Ahanmisi, Austin Hollins and Malik Smith and could use a center with Elliott Eliason and Maurice Walker becoming seniors next season.

The three newcomers are among 33 players that are expected to sign with Big Ten schools next week. Ohio State leads the way with five commitments and has the #2 recruiting class in the country, according to ESPN and #3, according to Scout.com. Northwestern, under new head coach Chris Collins, might have their best ever recruiting class, has four commitments.

Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Purdue join Minnesota as Big Ten schools with three commitments. Indiana moved up to the #12 recruiting class by ESPN with the re-commitment of guard James Blackman this week. Illinois is #13 after landing LeRon Black of Memphis White Station, the same school as Gopher guard Andre Hollins and Quentin Snider of Louisville Ballard. Both players received interest from Minnesota.

Iowa, Michigan State, Nebraska and Penn State have two commitments. The Spartans landed point guard LouRawls Nairn of Sunrise Academy, who visited Minnesota in August.

Wisconsin has one commitment.

Kentucky, which had the top 2013 recruiting class, moved back into the top spot for the Class of 2015 when Trey Lyles committed to the Wildcats.

Xavier, which landed Lakeville North guard J.P. Macura moved up to # 4 after getting a verbal from Trevon Blueitt, a former UCLA commit. The Musketeers have five verbals.

The Big Ten has landed commitments from twelve players among ESPN's Top 100. They are #12 D'Angelo Russell (Ohio State), #19 James Blackmon, Jr. (Indiana), #22 Keita Bates-Diop (Ohio State), #25 Jae'Sean Tate (Ohio State), #35 Quentin Snider (Illinois), $41 Leron Black (Illinois), #44 Robert Johnson (Indiana), #49 Kameron Chatman (Michigan), #66 Victor Law (Northwestern), #72 Lourawls Nairn (Michigan State), #88 Vincent Edwards (Purdue) and #98 Payton Dastrup (Ohio State).

The Gophers did not land a commitment from an ESPN Top 100 recruit, but they were involved with more top flight players than ever under first year head coach Richard Pitino and his staff.

They include #20 Isaiah Whitehead (Seton Hall), #23 Reid Travis (Stanford), #30 Abdul-Malik Abu (North Carolina State), #33 Tyler Ulis (Kentucky), #38 Josh Perkins (Gonzaga), #40 Terry Larrier (VCU), #47 Kaleb Joseph (Syracuse), #55 Ja'Quan Newton (Miami), #61 Alex Robinson (Texas A&M), #62 Dominique Collier (Colorado), #64 Paul White (Georgetown), #84 Sandy Cohen (Marquette) and #99 Riley LaChance (Vanderbilt)

The Gophers are still in the mix with #17 Rashad Vaughn, the former Cooper standout who is now at Findlay Prep. Vaughn is expected to sign in April. Iowa State and UNLV are thought to be the frontrunners along with the Gophers.

The question that most Gopher fans have with the loss of Travis is where do they do with the remaining scholarship. Vaughn would make sense, but he has indicated that he is looking to a one-and-done player and being away from home court hurt or help the Gophers' chances, depending on how you look at it.

Delshon Strickland of Minnesota is a possibility. He is not expected to sign this week.

Strickland transferred to Minnetonka after playing at Holy Angels. He scored in double figures in all but four games this season for the Stars and averaged 18.3 points per game. Strickland had nine games of 20 or more points and added two more games of 30 or more, including a season-best 36 points versus Chaska. The Stars were the top seed in Section 6AAA, but were upset in the playoffs. Strickland was a third team College Basketball News' All-Metro selection.

Strickland shined this spring and summer for the D1 Minnesota AAU program. He took an official visit to Auburn and received scholarship offers from Drake, Hampton, Lehigh, Missouri State, North Dakota, Northern Colorado, Providence, Richmond, Toledo, Tulsa, UTEP, Vermont and Virginia Tech.

Minnesota assistant coach Ben Johnson attended a recent Skippers' open gym and Strickland was a guest at the Gopher football game versus Iowa.

Strickland is hoping that a strong senior season will interest some new suitors along with his current list of schools.

Typically, teams that sign players in the late signing period, land high school recruits that are under the radar or junior college transfers. Many top juco caches prefer to have their players sign in the spring, so they are focused more on their sophomore season.

With so much uncertainty on the remaining scholarship, Gopher Hole will keep you updated with the latest names that could be on the 2014-15 roster.

There are only 13 players uncommitted from the ESPN Top 100 list and that number is likely to shrink as several are expected to announce their college choice before Wednesday. Ironically, the top four players are undecided.

They are #1 Jahlil Okafor, a 6-foot-10 center from Chicago (IL) Whitney Young, #2 Myles Turner, a 6-foot-11 center from Bedford (TX) Trinity, #3 Cliff Alexander, a 6-foot-8 forward from Chicago (IL) Currie and #4 Tyus Jones.

Okafor and Jones are expected to play together in college and they will face each other December 12th at Apple Valley High.

***************

Minnesota fans might be disheartened with the loss of Travis, but there is still plenty of reasons to attend The High Performance Academy Jamboree next Saturday.

The top players include Isaiah McKay (Park Center), Delshon Strickland (Minnetonka), Jordan Dembley, Ian Theisen (who will sign with South Dakota State) and Wheeler Baker of Osseo (who is headed to Albany), Prior Lake's Jon Sobaski (who will sign with North Dakota State), Sam Rosga, Sam Neumann and Jashon Cornell (the #1 football recruit in the Class of 2015) of Cretin Derham Hall, Jake Wright (who will sign with Citadel) and Amir Coffey of Hopkins, Reid Travis, Sacar Anim and Jarvis Johnson of DeLasalle, J. P. Macura of Lakeville North, Tyus Jones and Brock Bertram of Apple Valley and Marshawn Wilson (Hill-Murray).

Here is the schedule:

2:40PM Minneapolis North vs. Braham
3:20PM Minneapolis South vs. Park Center
4:00PM Columbia Heights vs. Rosemount

Hard to tell from the stats but it doesn't look like he is much of a 3 pt shooter, does he get most of his points going to the basket, pull of jumpers or ????

He shoots 32.4% from the 3 point line and shoots about 4 of them per game- so it looks like it's a decent part of his game from the stats.

I'm shocked Sam Cassell has a son named Sam Casseell Jr.

Sam Cassel Jr is a freshman at Chipola College, a teammate of Carlos Morris and averages 19 ppg. Anyone with knowledge of his situation?

Sam Cassel Jr is a freshman at Chipola College, a teammate of Carlos Morris and averages 19 ppg. Anyone with knowledge of his situation?

He's at Chipola because of academics. He is committed to go to Uconn next year. His pops played with Kevin Ollie, Uconn's coach, in the NBA.

Hard to tell from the stats but it doesn't look like he is much of a 3 pt shooter, does he get most of his points going to the basket, pull of jumpers or ????

From the film I watched, he's definitely not a slasher or strong finisher. He doesn't appear to be real strong. Has good 3 point range and a decent mid-range game. Average passer and ball handler. Looks pretty good defensively. He's not a program changer and I can't understand how he was a 4* coming out of high school. We've had much better on campus visiting the past year or so.

He shoots 32.4% from the 3 point line and shoots about 4 of them per game- so it looks like it's a decent part of his game from the stats.

One game Cape Fear where he went 5-7 from the three, take that game out and he is in the low 20's as a percentage, shoots lights out from 2-pt though, in the 60% range, pretty consistent every game which is very impressive.

Can't tell from stats, may be getting alot of points in the open floor on fast breaks, might be great around the basket, sounds like he has some basketball skills, just not sure it will be from the 3-pt line, going 5-7 in a game certainly means he could develop into a consistent 3-pt shooter, IE 1/3 or 2/6 (in Pitino's offense) type shooter consistently.

The No. 5 Chipola Indians wrapped up their non-conference schedule in fine fashion Monday in Panama City by outlasting USC-Salkehatchie 91-83 to cap a 2-0 stay at the Gulf Coast Classic.

Cinmeon Bowers put in 25 points and eight rebounds to lead the Indians, who won their seventh straight to improve to 14-1 on the year heading into their Panhandle Conference opener Saturday in Pensacola.

The Indians held off a game Salkehatchie squad that had already notched a win over defending national champion Central Florida earlier this season.

Chipola led 44-36 at halftime, but a 9-0 second half run gave Salkehatchie a 61-60 lead with around eight minutes to play in the game.

But the Indians answered with five straight to regain the edge and didn't relinquish the lead again.

"It was a great game. Salkehatchie played really well," Chipola coach Patrick Blake said after the game. "After they took the lead, we were able to string together some good offensive possessions and get some stops and take the lead back the rest of the way."

Sam Cassell, Jr. and Carlos Morris also had 16 points each for the Indians, with Torian Graham scoring 15 points on 4-of-5 from the three-point line, and Demetrious Floyd putting in 10 points and six assists.

Denzel Collins led Salkehatchie with 20 points on 6-fo-8 shooting from deep, while Jimmy Givens and Darryl Bridges each had 19 points.

The Indians topped Central Georgia Tech 91-69 on Sunday's first day at the Classic, with Graham leading the way with 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while Morris added 14 points, and Floyd 11.

Freshman 7-footer DeJuan Harvey also provided a lift off the bench for Chipola with eight points, five rebounds, four blocked shots, and two steals.

Chipola shot 55 percent from the field overall before making 58 percent in the win over Salkehatchie.

"I was really pleased how we played offensively these last two games," Blake said. "We did a great job of sharing the ball and executing our offense, especially coming off of a 10-day break. We struggled defensively at times where we're just not being where we need to be on the floor and not communicating, but that's not a surprise after the layoff we had."

The coach has been critical of his team's lack of consistency at the defensive end of the court throughout the season, though given the 14-1 record against one of the stronger non-conference schedules in the country shows the Indians to be in a pretty good place going into league play.

"Absolutely, we made sure to load up our non-conference schedule to make sure we were tested going into conference play and I was happy with how our guys responded and found a way to win," Blake said. "As far as what we're trying to do offensively and defensively, we're still just figuring ourselves out, but I hope we're on the right track headed into Pensacola on Saturday."

Pensacola State is 12-5 going into Saturday's Panhandle opener, but the Indians coach said his players have to be ready for the kind of energy and atmosphere that comes with a league game.

"It's going to be a tough test for us right off the jump. Panhandle Conference play is totally different from the non-conference and especially being on the road," Blake said. "Their gym is always packed and loud and a hostile environment. The focus the next couple of days for us is to get the rust off from the Christmas break and make sure we're going into Saturday healthy and ready to execute our game plan."

Chipola Faces TCC Team Desperate for Win

http://chipola.prestosports.com/sports/mbkb/2013-14/releases/201401131vidy9

By: Dustin Kent - JCFloridan.com

The No. 4 Chipola Indians will head to Tallahassee on Tuesday night to take on a TCC Eagles team desperate to get a win.

The Eagles (11-8 overall, 0-3 in Panhandle Conference play) are still looking for their first league win after suffering a trio of heartbreaking losses, including a pair of overtime defeats to Northwest Florida State and Pensacola State.

TCC most recently lost to Gulf Coast State 80-72 on Saturday in a game the Eagles led by 12 in the second half before a three-point barrage by Commodores guard Elliott Cole sparked a huge comeback win.

But despite the 0-3 mark, Chipola coach Patrick Blake said that he and his players are well-aware that they are facing a high-quality Panhandle team.

"The crazy thing, especially about this league, is they could easily be 3-0 and we could easily be 0-2 going into this game," the coach said, noting the Indians' close wins of 77-76 over Pensacola State and 69-65 over Gulf Coast. "They've had a couple of plays late not go their way whereas we were able to hit two free throws with seven seconds left to beat Pensacola and then blocked a three-point shot against Gulf Coast at the end to secure a win.

"Their record is not indicative of how good of a team they are. We're preparing to play a great team."

Tallahassee was on a bit of a hot streak coming into conference play having won six of its last seven before the 77-71 overtime loss to Northwest Florida State on Jan. 4.

The Eagles are led offensively by sophomore guard Earvin Morris, who is averaging 14.9 points per game while shooting 55 percent from the field and 51 percent from the three-point line, with freshman guard Dirk Williams scoring 12.5 points per game, and sophomore forward Cameron Naylor 11.9 points per game.

TCC has shot the ball well from distance so far, converting 39 percent from the three-point line as a team with five different players shooting 35 percent or better.

Blake said that the Eagles present problems with their versatility at both ends of the floor.

"They're very good defensively and have incredible length and athleticism at all five positions," he said. "They can score in multiple ways and really pose a challenge for the defense in keeping them out of the paint and also guarding three-point shooters. Offensively, it's really tough to score against that kind of length and athleticism."

While the Indians are 2-0 and 16-1 overall, it hasn't been exactly a smooth start to the conference season so far.

Chipola allowed 57 percent shooting against Pensacola State and won by a point despite the Pirates missing 13 free throws on the night, while the struggles transferred to the offensive end against Gulf Coast in a game the Indians shot 33 percent from the field and made only 2-of-21 three-pointers.

Blake said there really isn't just one point of emphasis to improve, but there definitely needs to be a change in the team's mental approach to the game.

"It's really everything, but my main concern is I don't think our energy and effort is where it needs to be. We're just not on the same page," he said. "We're worried about things we can't control instead of having our focus on what each player can do individually to help us win.

"I just think we're still growing. For the first time really all year, teams have made us get to our second and third options in the offense and we haven't done a good job moving the ball, and defensively it feels like we're a step behind. But I've been excited with the last couple of practices. This is a great group that wants to win."

From the look of things thus far, wins appear as if they will be even harder to come by in the Panhandle Conference this year, with all six games having been decided by single digits, including two in overtime.

"This is probably the most balanced the Panhandle has been since I've been here," Blake said. "There's never an off night, especially on the road. Tallahassee is one of the toughest places to play, so we're going to have to play our best game on both ends of the floor to come away with a win."

Tallahassee Community College upset No. 1 Chipola College

Upset City: Eagles take down top-ranked Chipola

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (January 14, 2014) - Eagle fans stormed the court on Tuesday night as Tallahassee Community College upset No. 1 Chipola College, dominating the Indians by the score of 80-59 in Panhandle Conference action.

Tallahassee (12-8, 1-3 PC) came into its game on Tuesday evening with an upset on its mind against a Chipola (16-2, 2-1) team that is the best in the land.

The Indians are No. 1 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Top 25 Men's Poll, and No. 1 in the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) Men's Basketball Coaches' Poll.

The Eagles were trying to turn things around after losing their first three conference games. They could not have gotten off to a better start in this one.

The Bill Hebrock Eagledome was rocking as the Eagles drained shot after shot from behind the arc. Tallahassee converted on six three-pointers in the first half, shooting 40 percent from downtown and 60 percent from the field. Chipola shot just eight percent from three-point land in the first half.

The Eagles held a big advantage in the assist and rebounding categories at the break which greatly contributed to the 20-point advantage Tallahassee had at halftime. The Eagles led 46-26 heading into the locker room.

Production came from many players in many different categories as the Eagles stepped up for this game. Duran Porter led the team in scoring at halftime with ten points, which included two monster jams! Dirk Williams and Cameron Dozier both had eight points. Marlon Johnson led the team at halftime in both assists (4) and rebounds (6).

The Eagles did not cool off one bit in the second half, continuing their dominance. It seemed as though they could not miss. The upset was becoming more and more of a possibility as the seconds kept ticking away. The Eagles went up big and never looked back, ending the night with a 21-point victory.

Five different Eagles scored in double figures. Earvin Morris was the high point man with 18. Johnson finished with eleven rebounds and seven assists. Williams, Dozier, Morris, Stephen and Porter all finished in double-figures.

Entering tonight, the Eagles were 4-7 against NJCAA No. 1 ranked teams. The last time Tallahassee defeated the nation's top-ranked team was on January 20, 2007, also against Chipola. In a game played in Marianna, it took two overtimes for the Eagles to pull out a five point win, 97-92.

This win could give the Eagles a huge momentum boost as they into round two of conference play. They have an entire week to prepare for their next game when they host Northwest Florida State College on January 21. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. eastern.
