Steven Montgomery, a 5-foot-10, 191-pound cornerback/safety from Miramar (FL) High, has committed to Minnesota. He visited the Twin Cities for the USC game, but was uncertain about the Golden Gophers after the firing of former head coach Tim Brewster. However, Northern Illinois had recruited him and when head coach Jerry Kill too over and showed that they were committed to his recruitment, Montgomery felt the decision to join the Big Ten school was fairly easy. GopherHole.com caught up with Montgomery to learn the latest on his decision.

10.78 in the 100m is unbelievably fast for a high schooler. Crawford-Tufts is the reigning MN 100m champ with a similar time.

That caught my attention too. Crawford-Tufts ran 10.75 at state to win by a wide margin (.29s over second), don't know if that is his best time or not. Always nice to add kids with that type of speed.

Nah. That time would've placed him 35th in his own state this past season. He would've had to run a 10.59 just to make the Top 10 times. And that's just in Florida. Denard Robinson ran a 10.56 in 2009, the 6th-fastest time in the state that season. Now THAT is fast for a football player.

Even though he wants to major in Communications, I commend him on actually having a major picked out.

Montgomery is a very nice addition to this class. I don't think he needs to apologize for his 100M time, it's not like we have 10 in state cornerbacks that run that fast. Montgomery has a chance to play early at MN with our current DB depth

No one is saying he needs to "apologize" for it. It's a very solid time. Calling it an "unbelievably fast" time is an unbelievable stretch. It would be like calling Adam Weber an "unbelievably" great college QB.

Personally, I care a lot more about his abilities as a football player, and how fast he is on a field, wearing cleats - not how fast he can run on a track with spikes on his feet.

Let's not try to over analyze track speed verses football speed. I'd love to see what either him or lil Denard Span runs with pads and a helmet on..

Speed aside.. just looking at his offers and knowing he chose us is awesome. Especially when he picks us over Wisky.

Eat it, Becky!

Well of course Becky just lost interest, so we're just picking up their scraps.

Harold Howell won the 07 Florida T&F 100m with a time of 10.72, and everyone was excited about his 100m time, so why not get excited for Montgomery's?

Watching his YouTube and reading his evaluations, I'd say he's very similar to Trumain Brock.

Like Brock, he's fast and likes to hit. Brock played a big part in our 2008 success.

Welcome aboard Steve Montgomery.
