Riley Dearring, a 6-foot-4, 170-pound sophomore wing from Minneapolis (MN) DeLaSalle, is known to Minnesota basketball fans after the Minneapolis StarTribune had a front page story on him last season. However, Dearring is determined to show that he is more than just a curiosity and worthy of the early hype. GopherHole.com caught up with Dearring this weekend after shining at two events to learn the latest on his transfer and recruitment. He is expected to attend Tubby’s Tip-Off Friday evening.

Smart move

He picked a helluva school to transfer to.

Really? I think DeLaSalle plays the most boring style of basketball in MN. With all of the players they've had they only score around 50 points a game, in a very average conference. I'm also surprised that DeLaSalle never recieves the type of scrutiny that Hopkins, Minnetonka, MTS, Henry-Sibley, faces for "recruiting" players.

DeLaSalle's players are some of the most recruitable in the state for college coaches - they graduate knowing how to defend and play team basketball. While you may think their style is boring, it makes the players better, not only for their high school days but for their college careers.

Bingo.

Coach Thorson preps his players well for the next level. He teaches defense, some more defense, and sharing the ball.

And I wasn't just referencing the basketball aspect. De La Salle is a damn good school in all aspects. Apparently Dearring is preping himself for education at the next level as well.

Can't blame the kid if his dad is a DeLaSalle alum..I'd do the same thing if I was to make that decision.

He goes to De La Salle and he transferred. Got it. Now about his play. Dearring's been "hyped" for so long you feel he should be a senior. But now I feel the kid is drawing the attention based on his play not some article in the paper. Watched him twice this weekend and felt like he's smoother and more of a creator. He's pretty skinny but with a couple of years and 25 lbs he'd be a nice fit in a gopher uniform.

i have no doubt that if a young player like riley transferred from de la salle to hopkins that people would be up in arms at Novak. funny how it doesn't go both ways.

Having played against big D a number of times, I was never bored. More tired than anything. And frustrated.

I would have to agree with you about DeLaSalle's style of play. They are very successful, but not the prettiest team to watch. The word is that they will be more open this season. Only time will tell, but they will have plenty of talent with Jonah Travis, Bretson McNeal, Riley Dearring and others.
