Nick Banyard, a 6-foot-8 forward from Flower Mound (TX) Marcus, helped lead Texas Assault to the adidas Super 64 17-and-under title last week. Banyard was part of a Marauders’ team that won the Texas Class 5A state title. Banyard has received plenty of recruiting interest from several top programs, including Minnesota. Head coach Tubby Smith and assistant coach Vince Taylor talked to Banyard Tuesday and extended a scholarship offer GopherHole.com caught up with Banyard in Las Vegas before the offer to talk about the latest on his recruitment.

Banyard -- Barnyard -- only a commitment or an r away from greatness -- profile link

ESPN
"Strengths:
Banyard is an excellent athlete that has a very affective mid range game. He also does a good job attacking the rim in transition where he is strong and athletic enough to finish through contact. He runs the floor well and consistently although at times his energy comes and goes which is not uncommon for a young player. Banyard can knock down the 15 foot jumper off the catch and post smaller defenders where he uses his size and strength to elevate and score over them. He works the high post area and is a good defensive rebounder but could be a better offensive rebounder because of his size and athletic ability. Banyard finishes above the rim with a clear path and can defend both forward positions."

That summary must have been written by a family member as it's VERY kind as his grade hardly seems to reflect the summary. After seeing him in two tourney's this year I'm not that surprised Taylor offered him. He's a kid with more athleticism than skill but not very physical. On his AAU team he was certainly able to provide the highlight though as the "work" was left to others. And as some will not appreciate on this forum, I didn't find him anymore skilled/athletic than Ross Travis. In fact, when we were watching the championship game in Vegas it was a comment shared by a couple of the locals.

OP Titled: "Banyard -- Barnyard -- only a commitment or an r away from greatness"

Very true...I can see it now. Banyard commits and becomes a Gopher Stud. The Student Section would then become "Banyard's Barnyard" !!!

Banya(r)d

He wants to go to engineering school and UM is a pre-eminent engineering school but it usually will take more than his 2.9GPA (out of state) and 20 ACT to get into the School of Engineering and Science unless they've dropped their standards, which I seriously doubt.

Bnyard is going to visit... Plus a link of an old game 20 pts 13 rebounds... link

Six-foot-8 Flower Mound,Texas forward Nick Banyard had a strong summer with Texas Assault firmly putting himself on the recruiting map. Minnesota and New Mexico are amongst the schools recruiting him the hardest and visits have been set. Banyard is also looking at visiting some other schools as well.

Banyard powers FM Marcus over Lewisville
"Banyard led Marcus in scoring with 20 points and cleaned up on the glass, tallying 13 rebounds. And the 6-foot-8 junior showed incredible versatility, knocking down 3-pointers in the second quarter while mucking it up in the paint in a physical third quarter, picking up a technical foul."

Banyard Rykhoek #20 #14 in Texas 2012 class

14. Chad Rykhoek (Fort Worth Christian / PF) – Another big with good athleticism and explosion. Has good feel around the basket and can finish. Lefty. Not a super athlete and has work to do with defensive awareness.
Considering: Texas A&M, Gonzaga, William & Mary, SMU, UC-Santa Barbara

20. Nick Banyard (Flower Mound Marcus / PF) - Banyard has a ton of upside and will either play at wing or power forward. A great rebounder and he does a great job running the floor as well.
Considering: Houston

"Texas prospect Nick Banyard, a 6-8 forward in the 2012 class, will visit the Gophers in the mid-September, according to Rivals.com. Earlier this month, the Gophers received a verbal commitment from Wisconsin prospect Wally Ellenson. According to a source close to the program, the Gophers will likely pursue a three-man 2012 class. They'd like to add a player like Banyard and at least one big man with both Ralph Sampson III and Trevor Mbakwe graduating. The third scholarship would become available if Rodney Williams decided to enter next summer's NBA draft, a strong possibility in the eyes of the Gophers staff."

-Former Kentucky student manager Chris Briggs was hired to be the head coach at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kent., Thursday. Briggs was a student manager during Tubby Smith's time at Kentucky.

“Chris Briggs has a high basketball IQ, and I am positive that he will continue to carry on the winning tradition at Georgetown College,” said Smith, according to wkyt.com. “Chris has been working towards this goal for many years and will work hard and do what it takes to be successful the right way. We at Minnesota are behind him and will always be there for the Georgetown program and Chris Briggs.

cut and paste quote; from a scout mbd link on Banyard

Quote from this scout link --
"Here is scout

Banyard used his size and length to attack shots and rebounds alike, keeping his overmatched opponents from attacking the rim much at all this weekend. He is aggressive on the defensive end and helped shut down the Kingdom Hoops 16s squad.

PF, Texas Assault – While Smart was the leader for Texas Assault, Banyard certainly made his presence known in the adidas Super 64 tournament. The 6-foot-7, possibly 6-foot-8, power forward scored the game winning put back in the semi-finals and got loose for a few jumpers and defended the bucket in the championship.

He shows some flashes here and there. Banyard is a long and athletic forward who needs to get stronger. His lack of strength shows up on the glass, but still he does finish well around the rim, and he altered a lot of shots on the defensive end of the floor.

Dave Telep tweet: Nick Banyard is going to New Mexico. Texas Assault forward off the board.

Go Gophers!!

I wonder how much interest was truly there from Tubby an co. I like the idea of having a Damian Johnson type 3/4 on the roster, but it seems like we need to hit a homerun with the current open scholarship.

According to Monter, Tubby & Vince were planning on a home visit next Monday followed by a campus visit the following weekend, so it appears as if we definitely wanted Banyard.

That's quite a disappointment to lose out on a recruit to New Mexico then. Hopefully, they rebound with somebody better.
