Chris Monter Q&A: Andre Ingram Looking to Make the ''Transition'' From Juco to Gopher

Andre Ingram, a 6-foot-7, 235-pound sophomore forward from Butler County (KS) CC, is visiting Minnesota this weekend. Ingram played high school basketball at Minnesota Transitions in the shadows of Kevin and Kyle Noreen, but has emerged as a prospect after two years at the Jayhawk Conference school. GopherHole.com caught up with Butler head coach Mike Bargen Friday afternoon to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Sounds like a late bloomer, we'll see how he turns out. If he turns out, great. If not, he'll only be here for 2 years. With Mbakwe coming back he's not expected to start or anything anyway.

OH, but don't number of stars and/or number of Big Time programs on a kid's list matter? I thought that was all we went by when offering a scholly.

In 2009, Trevor Mbakwe's only offer coming out of Miami-Dade CC was from Minnesota. He must've really sucked.

Umm....you sure bout that one DP lol? GH article with Trevor during his recruitment: http://www.forums.gopherhole.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=852

GH: Where else do you have offers from?
TM: LSU and Alabama and some other schools are showing some love. My recruitment has been going really well.

But still, the point with JUCOs, is you definitely will get a mixed bag as far as their offers vs. what they bring to the table on the court. Teams are less likely to bite on a late blooming JUCO player, getting only two years from him. But for us, it's actually a decent fit, as we get a guy to give some minutes off the bench in the paint at PF in place of Colt, and then next year, you have a senior down there at least who can provide experience and leadership to younger guys, probably still backing up. And then you still have your scholarship for 2013. This pickup does not bother me one bit.

More like going into Miami-Dade

Huh?

Note how he said, "LSU and Alabama...are showing some love." He doesn't come right out and say that they offered. All of the recruiting sites are in agreement that Minnesota was his only offer in 2009. I'm not sure, no, but I'm inclined to believe them, especially when they all say the same thing. Regardless, the point remains - it is unbelievably stupid to judge an individual player based solely on offers. Then again, that's par for the course for "BGF".

"More like going into Miami-Dade..." is a better description than "coming out of" because Mbakwe committed (publicly) to the Gophers just 2 months after he left Marquette (which he did out of the blue, right before classes started, because he "wanted to go to the junior college route"). His public commitment to Minnesota occurred long before he had ever played at Miami-Dade.

Not that I want to get deep into that on this forum.

I agree with your real point in this thread.

I've never heard that story. Thanks for the info.

I looked him up on Rivals, and it lists 8 offers: http://rivals.yahoo.com/minnesota/basketball/recruiting/player-Trevor-Mbakwe-30915;_ylt=AsPCmamg_ivuP5tChcXaa97FspB4

Minnesota, Alabama, Baylor, LSU, Memphis, NC State, Oregon, Cincinnati, and Florida. Now, whether those are legitimate, no idea. Now Scout, on the other hand, does only list Minnesota. So who really knows. But I agree with you, offers, especially at the JUCO level, don't mean a whole lot if the staff believe this kid can help in the post.

Weird. When I typed that last night, I was on my laptop at home, and it only showed the Minnesota checkmark on Rivals. Now, on my work computer in the office, it shows them all. Damn computers! Can't trust 'em!

We get in, GW. Trevor greatly wronged Marquette by leaving when he did and you will never, ever forget it.
