Marcus Alipate, a 6-foot-1 senior two-sport athlete from Bloomington (MN) Jefferson, scored 16 points last night in a 57-41 loss to Chaska to go over 1000 points for his career. Alipate is an outstanding point guard who has basketball scholarship offers from Wofford and South Dakota and is hearing from several colleges about playing football, including Minnesota, which would be his dream choice. GopherHole.com talked to Alipate after the game to learn the latest on his recruitment.

My $.02:

Like his brother, Marcus is a quality individual who would represent the U well. It is hard to evaluate his football skills since he hardly ever got the ball the last couple of years. At least with Moses, you could see him with the football on every play. Marcus only got a couple touches per game. Teams would kick away from him on kickoffs, and it also seemed like he was banged up all year and not 100% healthy. Its also hard to evaluate him as a defensive back. He was one of Jefferson's better defenders, but since the DL and LBs could not stop the run against any team, they didn't face a lot of passes. A lot of SSC coaches I spoke were glad that he never got the ball much against them, and were perplexed why they didn't try to get him the ball more. Game speed is also hard to evaluate since he hardly ever had the ball in the open field. He was definitely the fastest player on the team, but not much competition there. I think BB is his best sport, but football is a wildcard since in game competition he didn't get a lot of opportunities to really show what he could do. If we still have guys like Kyle Henderson and A.J. Barker playing significant roles on the team in the next couple of years, a look at Marcus might not be the worst thing in the world

So with the talk of Moses Alipate not fitting the system for Coach Kill... does his brother having strong interest in joining him in MN quash those speculations?

Marcus alipate wouldn't have started for st Thomas this past year. He was probably not in the top 5 wr's in the south suburban conf.

I've only ever seen Marcus play basketball and his highlight tape. Guys like Josh and Rosemountain would probably be better able to access how these kids could turn out, but Marcus is a pretty athletic kid. He seemed pretty quick on a basketball court and you'd think that would transition pretty well to the football field. He seems to have pretty impressive body control (in basketball and the highlight tape) and also impressive vision.

However, he doesn't seem like a guy I would be too pumped up about being offerred a scholarship. He just hasn't done enough. That said, if we did offer, with, like Josh said, I wouldn't be scratching my head too much considering just how depleted we are at the WR ranks. I wonder what the chances are that he would walk on?

The scary thing about next season is that neither would AJ Barker or possibly Victor Kiese. I honestly think Fritz Waldvogel, Dan Noehring and Ricky Margarit are all better WRs right now than AJ Barker.

Who are they?

I saw a few SS Conf games last year. I really liked the kid from Lakeville South (Heller?) and if I remember he's a junior. I was also impressed with the lanky kid from Eagan (Hetges?). Anyway, I think Alipate is pretty good, so I'd be curious to know some of the guys who you think are better.

Both guys you mentioned are better. The eastview kid who also plays safety is better. Bursville has a kid who played rb and also some Wr that's better IMO. I don't think there's anyone who is fbs caliber. Hetges is a little too slow, and he was IMO by far the best wr in the conference

Yeah, I would much rather have Veldman (eastview) than Alipate.

First, I want to say I have no connection to Alipate or his family.

Second, where the hell does this crap come from? Coach Kill is going to tell Moses he has no shot? Alipate is an athlete, an outstanding athlete. He has size, ability, and decent speed.

He will get playing time in 2011. If we have learned anything, it's that Kill's offense enhances the abilities of the player sets on the field. Not one "Alipate-downer" has no coaching know-how even remote analytical ability if the say Moses should give up QB or take a hike.

Moses Alipate will graduate from the U. He came here to play football, get a world-class education, and stay close to his large family. Marcus will likely come to the U and graduate from here as well.

This "Alipate doesn't fit" crap has to stop.
