Chris Monter: Latest name in Gopher assistant search is Dan McHale

Since I'm coming from a completely ignorant point of view of this guy, I can only go off what the "experts" think of this hire. If the vibes are good, I can't help but be cool with it since it's not like I'd know any better. The youth of the staff is concerning, considering the conference we're in with all the great coaching in it. I think Pitino's crew might have some growing pains, but I like the potential here. Let's go young and energetic, hopefully mixed with excellent X's and O's, and let it fly.

@jeffborzello: Dan McHale is a terrific addition to Minnesota's staff. Richard Pitino put together a really good trio of assistants.

Go Gophers!!

As long as Coach P. wins, I'd be happy with Larry, Moe, and Curly.

Yea, I don't know much about this guy, but everybody in the know is for him. Thus, I'm for it. Let's see what happens with recruiting over the summer.

I will need to do some more research on this hire, but my initial reaction was disappointment. McHale appears to be the 3rd assistant at Seton Hall and is a younger guy with no known ties to the Midwest. When you compare him to Mark Phelps who was a head coach at a mid major, lead assistant under Herb Sendek, and has a reputation as a strong recruiter, McHale doesn't seem to measure up. I really would have liked to have seen an older guy with some head coaching experience added to this staff.

Seton Hall fans (for the most part) seem to think this is a loss for them and a good hire for us:QUOTE]

This is good news? Didn't McHale get Cosby, Mobley and now Sina?

4/23 1:21 PM | IP: Logged: According to Rivals: Jaren Sina 3 Star PG, good handle, 27th rated pg for '13 and offers from NU, Uva, Memphis, Fl., etc. Supposedly Mchale recruited him to Seton Hall. Wonder if Sina would transfer to the 'U'. Can never have enough pg's.

Seton Hall finished 3-15 in the Big East last year. Not sure how one could conclude that this is a major coup. He would probably take any job he can get to avoid being unemployed after next year.

Read the Seton link that was posted apparently McHale recruited the bulk of their team. I personally like Phelps better, but this is a solid get

I hate to say it, but good point to consider. I think reports about him have been positive but past experience is questionable to say the least. Here's hoping we have an up and coming coach!

Unless someone else is already leaving, this would complete his staff. And, young and hungry they would be:

HEAD: Pitino (30 yrs old, '05 Providence)
ASST: Young (37 yrs old, '98 UTEP)
ASST: Johnson (31 yrs old, '04 Minnesota)
ASST: McHale (34 yrs old, '01 Kentucky)
DOBO: Goodson (29 yrs old, '05 Kentucky)

I like it.

Its a similar situation when you are looking for great sales candidates. Are you young and hungry? Perfect, if you aren't young, do you have multiple divorces, like to party, and have many Motor Vehicle "toys" that make insurance and maintenance a very expensive endeavor.

Love it, I'll be begging you to work less.... But i'm not serious when I beg.

You guys have just landed one of the best assistant coaches in the country and this is how you welcome the guy.?

Do you have any idea what Seton Hall dealt with the past two years..?

Maybe before you judge a guy you should see what he is made of, see what high character he has and give him a chance. He is coming from THE best coaching treee in the country and if you don't think that Rick Pitino most likely personally signed off on this hire to his son you honestly don't know anything about how the hiring process works in college basketball.

Seton Hall's massive loss is huge gain for Golden Gopher basketball.

That's what I'm inclined to believe. Thanks for weighing in.

Did I accidentally get transported to the comments section of StarTribune.com?

PMG, bold will not happen on GopherHole. I say no more, because I will catch hell.

Do you have any idea what the Gophers have ben dealing with for the last 20 years?

Just read the above article. I am not convinced.

Sorry.

I'm happy with the hire, but you aren't going to see a lot of celebration when none of us really know anything about him first hand. I like what I've read though and I trust Pitino.

I say give Pitino a year and then start your bitching

Sorry.

Look around: Tyler Ennis of St. Benedict’s and Tyler Roberson of Roselle Catholic have committed to Syracuse; Michael Young of St. Benedict’s is bound for Pittsburgh; Hackensack’s Reggie Cameron of Hudson Catholic has chosen Georgetown; Josh Brown of St. Anthony is going to Temple and teammate Halice Cooke is headed to Oregon State.

Ennis & MikeBrown are not NJ kids, Ennis is from Canada & Brown from Pennsylvania
Roberson & Cameron are both very good. Neither RU or SHU ever had a shot with Roberson and Cameron picked Georgetown over SHU. to be 100% honest, it was not a tough choice. Same happened last year when Kyle Anderson changed hi$ mind at the la$t $econd and went to UCLA in$tead of SHU.
Josh Browne & Halice Cooke got scholarships because they play for the best high school program/coach in America.

Coach McHale will reap immediate rewards for your program and in a year you will look back and be thankful...

Gophers make it official:

Richard Pitino Completes Coaching Staff with Hiring of Dan McHale

University of Minnesota head men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino today announced the addition of Dan McHale to his coaching staff. McHale joins the previously announced Kimani Young and Ben Johnson on Pitino’s inaugural Gopher staff.

“I have known Dan for a long time and know that he will be a great addition to our staff,” said Pitino. “He fits what we already have in place here with Kimani and Ben, which is a love and passion for the game of basketball. I am looking forward to working with this staff as we build a competitive Big Ten program.”

McHale comes to the Twin Cities after serving as an assistant coach to Kevin Willard at Seton Hall for three seasons. McHale spent a total of six seasons on Willard’s staff, also working on his staff at Iona College.

“I am excited to join Coach Richard Pitino and the rest of the staff here at Minnesota,” said McHale. “He is one of the best coaches in the business and I am thrilled to be a part of this great staff. It is an exciting time for Gopher fans and I am really looking forward to getting to know everyone in the community and learning more about the great tradition that Minnesota Basketball has had and will continue to have.”

While at Seton Hall, McHale was in charge of the Pirates' defensive game planning and spearheaded opponent scouting and game preparation. He also spent time analyzing each opponent’s game film in order to develop appropriate responses to various schemes.

In his three seasons at Iona, McHale assisted Coach Willard in the rebuilding of the Gaels program. Their final season in New Rochelle (2009-10) included a nine-win improvement that resulted in 21 wins and the semifinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament. Willard was named the MAAC Coach of the Year following the season.

McHale spent four seasons at the University of Louisville, two as a video coordinator and two as a staff assistant, under Hall of Fame head coach Rick Pitino. During the final two seasons, McHale was responsible for advance scouting video upcoming opponents as well as evaluation video for Cardinal players.

As a staff assistant at Louisville, McHale’s duties included assisting in opponent scouting through film breakdowns, game preparation, and assisting in on-campus recruiting efforts.

A native of Chatham, N.J., McHale was a student manager for four years at the University of Kentucky (1997-2001), graduating with honors with a bachelor's degree in business administration.

He and his wife Jackie have a daughter, Lilly, and a son, Daniel.
