Drew Goodger, a 6-foot-5, 234-pound tight end from Shawnee (KS) Northwest, recently committed to Minnesota. He had been recruited by Northern Illinois by Golden Gopher head coach Jerry Kill and his staff and was in DeKalb for his official visit when Coach Kill announced he was coming to the Twin Cities. GopherHole.com caught up with Goodger to learn the latest on his decision.

20 on the ACT is not an excellent student.
Either he doesn't test well, or that 3.5 GPA is heavily inflated.

Liberal Use of the term, "excellent student."

True..20 is not excellent. It is on the low end of average. With the NCAA sliding scale, he did himself a great favor earning A's and B's to compile the 3.5.

At any rate, he sounds like a guy who values Kill's teaching/system and wants to be here.

Welcome Drew! Get ready for some hard work on the field and in the classroom!

Go Gophers!

20 I'm sure is well above average for the football team. Hell I was an honors student and scored a 19 on the ACT, got into the U and graduated and moved on to society just fine. I was a terrible test taker.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you just need a 17 or 18 to qualify for D-1? Could be the case he did just enough to qualify and stopped at that. One of my best friends got a 21 the first time she took the ACT and then the 2nd try got a 27.

NCAA sliding scale...

NCAA Division I eligibility works on a sliding scale. The higher a student's GPA, the lower the ACT/SAT score required. With a 3.5 GPA, a student only needs to score an ACT combined score of 39, ridiculously low. That's English, Reading, Math, & Science scores combined. D2 doesn't use the sliding scale. Each qualifying student must score a minimum 68 on the ACT.

There are many people who have test anxiety, but do well in school. My oldest son got a 15, yes - 15 - BARELY literate, the first time he took the ACT. He took an ACT prep course (not boot camp as on the East Coast) that maybe taught some test techniques, but mostly reduced anxiety, and he got a 22 on the retest. Not that 22 is great, but it got him into the schools he was interested in, including Minnesota. I really think too many high schools do not teach test-taking techniques. Some of us pick it up naturally, but others need to know the tricks.

For the record:
1) Yeah, some people don't test well. I totally understand that and don't knock anyone for it.
2) Not saying 20 is a bad score. Just saying that it doesn't seem to go well with "excellent student" - unless he doesn't test well.
3) Not that any of this matters. If the man is in, the man is in. Welcome aboard!
