Chris Monter: Blue Earth's Jonah Pirsig Hopes To Add Third Big Ten Offer

Wish he was playing another sport on top of lifting weights. Different sports use different muscles. I'm sure the basketball coach (1-4) could use a 6'9" 285 lb. center.

Basketball would be great for his footwork.

Basketball develops coordination, not really limited to a specific area, wrestling develops strength. It depends on what your objective is. Kind of hard to understand how a 6-9 guy isn't playing basketball in a small town like that. You can coach a basic skill level, you can't coach 6-9.

While I tend to agree, many 5A coaches these days disagree. They don't want their big guys doing wrestling because they are worried they will be forced to cut weight in the offseason.

Good point.

They should bring back the unlimited heavyweight class for the sake of the hosses.

Even if they did that, that's just 1 kid (or a couple).

The guys they are really worried about shedding too much weight are the 200 lbs LBers than cut to 170, the 230 lbs kids who cut to 190, etc.

I actually live in blue earth and have known Jonah since he was a young'un (huge even back then!). I don't know his reasons for not playing hoops, but the coach here has a reputation for rubbing people the wrong way, so I personally wouldn't fault him for not playing.

He's a great kid (feel like I'm talking about Adam Weber here) but definitely has to make some strides. He's got D-1 size and possible strength, but he's injury prone and needs to develop much more of a mean streak if he wants to play B1G football. Footwork also needs improvement. His classmate Sam Lee is also a prospect, and probably better for now if not having as much potential.

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention that it's actually Blue Earth Area h.s. (people go nuts over little things like that here).

Was it ever answered is to whether Jonah Pirsig is any relation to Robert Pirsig, author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance? That is such a classic book, and it would be extra cool if this kid were related to that guy.

I don't think so. But I agree with you.

We can talk about this "Earth" mover until we're "Blue" in the face, but we'll still be "Pirsig" our lips with anticipation over this prospect choosing our "Jonah" of a program over the "Whale" programs he could instead choose to play for.

This has been your Wahoo McDaniel Joke of the Day.

(Sorry, I'm posting from my phone, so I won't add trite and idiotic pictures in order to achieve the full "comedic" effect.)

Well in Wahoo's defense, those puns are so bad they're almost great. I'd give him an 'A' for effort anyway, but I'm quite the fan of bad puns.

Doesn't say much for the kid if he was rubbed the wrong way. The coach is a winner and been head coach for over 15 years. I understand not everyone gets along though.

Not saying he was, just my conjecture. I've seen a lot of really talented athletes flame out of the program over the years, who've done great things in football, baseball, wrestling, track (which have all had more success than the b-ball program).

Let me repeat that is not what I said. I don't want people to get that impression of him. I have my doubts as to his ability to step up to the big ten level for right now, but a coach killer (no pun intended) he is not. I'm pulling for him to succeed.

Uh Oh. A big kid (huge) who injury prone - is he a candy-ass? I am worried about his toughness now.

Thanks for your insight. I think I remember you posting this before (I'm too lazy to look it up), but does he have an Iowa/Wisconsin lean right now? Do you think the Gophers have a shot at recruiting him. It's pretty hard to tell what he's thinking from this interview..

Wasn't klug from Blue earth? Don't let this guy go to iowas or sconnie!

Candy-ass is a rough term. He's one of those kids who's still growing into his body, and it's hard being that big and staying healthy (6"9!). But like I said, he definitely needs to find a bit more fire to make the step up to the next level. He's one of those kids who you'd say- he can be as good as he wants to be because you just can't teach that type of size.

Much obliged, I'm relatively new here and try not to post on things others are more knowledgeable on, just so happens that I know him. I don't know what his preference would be to be honest. I'm impressed by Kill, and think he is the type who could bring the best out of him. Iowa and Wisconsin certainly have a better track record of producing linemen for now, but there's something to be said for playing for your home state, a couple hours away from your little hometown that already brings a ton of fans to Gopher games.

And Tap- Klug was from Caledonia, down in the SE. But yes! Let's seal these borders!

Klug from Caledonia

Klug is from Caledonia which is licated in the far SE corner of Minnesota -- 20 miles from LaCrosse, Wisconsin and 15 miles from Iowa. They have a successful football program and won their 3rd out 4 state titles this year in one of the smaller enrollment classes. Its probably at least90 miles east of Blue Earth . Caledonia is a place the Kill coaching staff should acquaint themselves to in my opinion.

It's about a 2.5 hour drive and yes they have one helluva a small school football team!

Robert Pirsig's father

Robert Pirsig's father was the late great Maynard Pirsig, Dean of the University of Minnesota Law school and professor emeritus at William Mitchell College of Law.

I have always found basketball as a great partner for football. Someone mentioned the weight loss angle for wrestling but provided that isn't in play, I would assume wrestling would be good for football as well. Basketball helps quicken those feet for the big guys and provides unlimited reps in catching the ball for everyone. My own little guy (7th grader) had nice speed but struggled with a pair of stone hands in football. Basketball has really helped develop his catching skills. It is like night and day compared to a couple years ago. I know some of that is due to natural maturing but there is no doubt a lot of it is directly related to basketball. Anyway... I will always subscribe to the "Mauer school of multiple sports" and hate to see kids specialize so early in their sporting lives.

This sounds like the exact kind of recruit from which to build the Gopher program. I would hate to see him slip to another Big 10 school.

Blue Earth has been very good in basketball under Gary Holmseth. I would say better then FB. BB has been within a game of the state tournament several times over the years. The Driscoll kid that went to Waseca was the only kid that was any good that quit the BB team.

Fire Inside

If he needs a fire lit, they need to find the Bucs previous D-coord Schimek and have him coach the line. Where'd he go after USC (not So Cal, United South Central)? I lost touch. He could light a fire in anyone right after he shoved his shoe up your a$$. Nice guy too.

How's the band at BEAHS these days? Polish up the Rouser (also their school song). Maybe they can play it on signing day. Seriously though, I got chills the first time I heard the U of M MB play that after having played it for several years in HS. Maybe a subliminal message thing here.
